The September Issue : A Vogue / Anna Wintour Documentary

Having seen The September Issue and allowing myself to think about it for about 24 hours, I can't help but come to same conclusion that I had when I finished it, that being that it was slightly disappointing. I do not want to say that I was bored because that it untrue. Like anyone who is even remotely interested in the fashion world, it was certainly interesting to watch, but ultimately the whole thing felt very one-dimensional.

I am not surprised that Wintour was as closed-off as ever, I wasn't expecting anything else. What I was expecting, however, was a more in-depth look at all the aspects of the magazine, and instead, I felt like it was a feature length film on fashion editorial choices.

The dynamic between Grace and Wintour was amazing to watch, and Grace herself took on quite the starring role despite Anna's presence, but I wanted to know more. We got a brief glimpse into ad pages, although barely, but nothing really on any other aspect of the magazine. The articles, the people who write them, even other photographers who work for Vogue. What about assistants and those amongst the lower ranks? The issue (and the magazine in general) wouldn't be able to be produced without the work of a lot of people yet we only get to see the efforts of a select few?

Perhaps the problem was that I expected it to be more about the issue as opposed to just Wintour herself, although I wasn't naive enough not to realize that Wintour would always be the star. It's good she isn't an actress, as I'm not sure she'd ever be able to carry a film all by herself.

I live in Canada, where the September Issue hasn't been released yet, but I am going to London next week, where it is available on DVD. If I buy the DVD in london, will I be able to play in Canada? I know many dvds have region codes that disallow you from playing a dvd purchased on another continent..... has anyone outside of europe bought the September Issue on dvd and had this problem?

amazon.uk is selling Region 2 [PAL] which is not compatible w/US NTSC. Many DVD players in the States now play all regions. You can watch it on your computer... just change the Region Code in your DVD driver & it will work fine. I guess you can change the region code a few times & then you can't change it back... not sure about that though... something I read once a long time ago.

My DVD arrived, so i plan a viewing party with my girlfriends, although i want to see it already, haha.

thanks to a sweet tfser i've been able to watch it before the DVD arrived.

hadn't finished it. but that's the BEST documentary about fashion I've seen ....

for some months or so i'm questionning myself do i keep going into the art business or go back to fashion business (not that i had a huge professional experiment in it ...) and this documentary is making the future professional decisions much tougher .....
coz just in the introduction of the documentary anna just slapped my fears about what ppl think of me doing fashion (let's be honest, art curating is seen more "serious" than fashion stylism)

EDIT : Bee has just arrived ... and well says what i think about fashion people and its industry ...

oh and one bad point : it lacks of DATES ! given the "six month before xxx" doesn't tell ppl what period of time it is ...

Just watched this! I love it! I admire and love Grace Coddington and Anna Wintour

I'm watching it right now in megavideo or that thing. Is it allowed for me to post the URL here? Or is it some kind of illegal thing? Not that I mind lmao but I wouldn't like to cause any trouble for the forums lol

It sucks that after 72 mins you have to wait I don't know how long to keep watching, but I think it's worth it.

Just watched it , it was pretty good, I really like Grace Coddington. She works so hard, you realize how much work people do and then sometimes in the end it doesn't even make the issue.

I just saw it. :buzz: I loved every second of it. Grace was the true star of it.

I feel Grace appeared like stealing the show because one basically don't know that much about her and we never thought she would be that much on the documentary.
So the surprise effect makes it look more "starish" ...

But she is amazing. I love that part when they show the Sienna vs Raquel editorials. This piece of the documentary pretty sums up what Vogue US is today ... You see that piece of the documentary, you pretty much understood everything about the magazine from the early 00s til now ...
Creativity, romantism, couture-old-fashion-dream vs Celebs, champagne and Spectacle ...

By the way, am I the only one who thought Testino acted like a huge-melon-star ?
(huge-melon would make only sense for frenchies i guess ....)

He didn't really seem to pick up on Annas dissapointment with the lack of 'pictures of the clothes'......either that or he chose not to.

Watched it a few days ago, and really loved it. There were some super funny moments like the now famous "famine of beauty" of ALT, or when Sienna was trying on a white dress and Anna did a sort of weird laugh inside of her mouth with her eyes wide opened

I like that Anna didn't keep the "Ice Queen" act during all the documentary. She seems obviously really demanding when it comes to her work; but it was nice to see her more "humane" side. I found the parts when she talks about her siblings' perception of her work and the one in which she says what she thinks about Grace were quite moving.
This being said, she was quite terrible at that présentation with Stefano Pilati, non  ?

I never paid attention to US Vogue's team so it was nice to discover Grace. This woman is so passionate about her work, it's fantastic. I loved the part when she's somewhere in Paris looking at some sort of "garden" or something, it was really beautiful. I also felt so bad for her that they didn't pick her fave shot for one of the eds

Anyway, I think I'll watch it again tonight  They should make more fashion documentaries like this one. The behind-the-scenes perspective is always more interesting imo

I just came from the cinema now, and i LOVED IT!!! Words cant describe how much I loved Grace in it. Her passion and determination in spite of the 'rejection' was very inspiring and quite moving, at one point it looked like she was about to cry while talking about things while sitting at her desk. And I loved the 'Alighting' edit she did with Raquel Zimmerman and David Sims for the Oct issue.

Its great to watch it and come home and look at that issue of Vogue with a new perspective.

I cried during that part when I saw it in the theatre   I watched it again today & loved it even more. I guess it's one of those things I could watch it over-and-over again.
