Having seen The September Issue and allowing myself to think about it for about 24 hours, I can't help but come to same conclusion that I had when I finished it, that being that it was slightly disappointing. I do not want to say that I was bored because that it untrue. Like anyone who is even remotely interested in the fashion world, it was certainly interesting to watch, but ultimately the whole thing felt very one-dimensional.
I am not surprised that Wintour was as closed-off as ever, I wasn't expecting anything else. What I was expecting, however, was a more in-depth look at all the aspects of the magazine, and instead, I felt like it was a feature length film on fashion editorial choices.
The dynamic between Grace and Wintour was amazing to watch, and Grace herself took on quite the starring role despite Anna's presence, but I wanted to know more. We got a brief glimpse into ad pages, although barely, but nothing really on any other aspect of the magazine. The articles, the people who write them, even other photographers who work for Vogue. What about assistants and those amongst the lower ranks? The issue (and the magazine in general) wouldn't be able to be produced without the work of a lot of people yet we only get to see the efforts of a select few?
Perhaps the problem was that I expected it to be more about the issue as opposed to just Wintour herself, although I wasn't naive enough not to realize that Wintour would always be the star. It's good she isn't an actress, as I'm not sure she'd ever be able to carry a film all by herself.
