I recently found out that miso soup often consists of fish broth and and almost every curry paste I checked out has some fishy ingredients in it. So far I haven't found a vegetarian friendly alternative.

I never ate miso soup, so I wouldn't know. I love cooking thai food though, using different curry pasts and I've managed to find one brand that's entirely vegan. I'm not sure if they're a Swedish product, but maybe it's worth to look into. the brand is called exotic foods.

Do you have any good recipes for (sweet) vegetarian baked goods? I love baking, but often I find it difficult to bake without eggs. It'd be great if you could share your favorite recipes for cakes/cookies/pies that don't have eggs in them. :flower:

I've never had a miso soup with fish broth in it, well certainly not from the packets I make myself. But I have had miso with dairy in it. I guess at a Japanese restaurant you just have to politely ask if their soup has hon dashi/bonito in it

Often you can substitute bananas for recipes that call for eggs, such as cookies or brownies. ^_^ There is also this stuff called Ener-G Egg Replacer which I've never used, but I've heard from a lot of vegans that they like it. You could also use silken tofu, flax seeds, or soy yogurt. Read more about replacing eggs with these things here: http://www.theppk.com/veganbaking.html -- That site is very helpful, and it tells you which of the above listed "egg replacers" work best for eat type of food you're cooking or baking. :flower:

I can really relate to you all when talking about friends, and not enjoying going to their homes for meals, my good friend wanted me to come over this weekend for pizza, ROTFL. I said yes, then called and said i couldnt make it. Hes my friend, but i will not be sidetracked from my lifestyle for him.

Anyhoo, has anyone tried Kashi's Go Lean cereal? It is marvelous with a cup of Light Silk Soymilk. I picked some up last week, and when i tell you it has become my MUST HAVE for breakfast, i mean it! What a light, delicious cereal, it is.

crakk, when I lived in the US for a couple of months that was exactly my breakfast must have as well. I always went to Whole Foods and bought everything. Sometimes I would even use Vanilla soymilk. Silk Soymilk is just the best. I really miss it.

^ I love Kashi's Go Lean! My mom started buying it a few years ago, then I tried it, and loved it!

One of my associates told me to go to Whole Foods, ive never been, but on days when i am coming home from school, traveling on that BORING D train, there are always women standing with their Whole Foods shopping bags. I believe there is one in Midtown Manhattan, so i will be going there soon. Thanks!

Is Whole Foods expensive? Or do the products' prices vary by selection?

Also, Kashi's Chocolate Oatmeal and Raisin Flax Seed oatmeal cookies are delicious, from what i hear. I really love Kashi so far!! So many different foods.

You have to check out Whole Foods. I'm pretty sure you'll love it. I could spend hours there checking out everything. I especially like the salad bar but they also have a good selection of vegetarian meals.

There is a Whole Foods at Columbus Circle in the Warner Center. That's where I always used to go when taking the A train home. That makes me realize how much I miss NYC.

You could make shortbread, it's just flour, butter, corn starch and icing sugar. Are you vegan, or just not an eggs eater? That would change the recipes a bit...

I'm kind of confused...what's wrong with pizza? I wonder if you are a vegan? I also wonder why we don't have a seperate veganism thread, because this thread being called vegetarian and being full of vegan information has to be confusing to a lot of people.

Shortbread is good, but too easy to make for me  I want to try cakes, but the ones I have tried so far haven't been anything spectacular, I wanted to know if someone here had tried & tested recipes.
I'm not vegan, I consider myself as vegetarian; I sometimes eat yogurt and I have used eggs when baking. But now I feel like I could stop using the eggs. :flower:

I like that idea. I've often thought about that too! Veganism and vegetarianism are very different.

Nah, creating an "us" and "them" atmosphere is definitely not a way to go. For a start, vegans are vegetarians. Secondly, this thread was started by somebody wanting to go vegan, not lacto-ovo vegetarian. Thirdly, the thread embodies the idea of coming together to make a lifestyle choice, no matter how small the contribution, it still is one. And if you start dividing between pescatarian, vegan, lacto-ovo, lacto etc then it won't create the same unity.

Vegetarian just encompasses many aspects of ways we can start making ourselves healthier and in many cases more ethically aware so I personally see no need to crack down.

^ That's true, I never really thought about it that way. But...

I just think that some of the people here are confused, such as the questions like asking if pizza is "bad". I just think there is a lot of confusion on here as to the differences between vegans and vegetarians, and I think this thread is kind of a jumble of conflicting thoughts which might be hard to sift through for some. I think if there was a thread for vegetarians (including pescarians and lacto-ovo vegetarians, etc) and one for strictly vegans, it'd be easier for people to follow what's going on. But since this is a fashion forum, I understand that it's good enough that we even have this thread, so I guess I can't really expect different threads for everything...

We could always rename this thread to "Veg*ns," which is a universal term for "vegetarians and vegans."

I'm just saying...:innocent:
