The Vegetarian & Vegan Thread

^ You're welcome for the links. :flower:

I find that many restaurants are now starting to offer more veggie options. For instance, I went to PF Chang's last night for dinner with a friend and noticed that the menu had an entire vegetarian section. I got Vegetarian Mo Po Tofu, which was superb! However, it is still quite frequently the case that the "vegetarian" options at other restaurants are simply carb laden meals that do not contain meat. They are not necessarily nutritious. While I believe in indulging now and then, I also believe in putting food in my body that it can really use. Not junk 24/7.

I don't have any problems when it comes to eating with co-workers. Luckily, a co-worker of mine is also a vegetarian, so most people in the office are aware that they need to select restaurants with options for us. In my line of work (marketing/business), I find that many of the women are very health conscious and concerned about the appearance of their bodies overall. They tend to want to eat heathfully, which frequently means salad bar for lunch! We go to this one place called "Salad Creations" where you can select from endless possibilities and make some really yummy salads and wraps. Plus, the servers wear berets with vegetables on them which is highly entertaining.

im a veggie myself but i do eat fish...
i cant cook at all so thats a big problem cos my family (especially my grandma - i live with her) doesnt know how to cook vegetarian meals (or with fish) and so i end up eating more or less the same...does someone know a website with recipes? simple recipes with simple ingredients prefered....

http://www.vegsoc.org/cordonvert/recipes/index.html Is a really good website for some recipes. Also if you like I can give you some recipes as I have a ton of veggie cook books, do you have any particular dislikes/allergies?

I definately agree with you about the junk- whilst I don't freak over a little chocolate occassionaly, I don't want to muck up my body with cr*p. Eating healthily make me feel and look better. That "Salad Creations" place sounds so great - especially the waiters! - I wish there were more places like that rather than endless fast food chains

This is the link to their website, if anyone is interested. You can do a search to see if there is one in or near your city. :flower:

I know you're not vegan, but there's a cookbook I use that has all-vegan recipes that are quite simple and tasty. :flower: It's called The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen. I used it when I first turned veggie and it was a big help! Also check out amazon.com for other cookbooks and browse through the reviews.

^^ I love their hats! I also checked out the menu on that link at it does look so tasty! I wish there were branches over here

awww thank you guys for all the tips!! :flower:

chanelnumber5~ill check out the books and the websites and of course id be thankful for every recipe you might have...i dont have any allergies, im just not a very big fan of cooked tomatoes or pepper (i like them fried tho!) and as i said, the recipes should be easy cos im not a great cook...thanks so far :flower:

cestmagique~thanks alot for the tip! altho im not a vegan i love to try new things! ill check out amazon! :flower:

this place sounds so good! I spent a fair amount of time gazing at the menu. :innocent:

LOL. Yeah there is a lot to gaze at! The bowls they give you for the salad are so ginormous that I always box up the rest and eat it the next day!

^^^that sounds soooooo good! I'm Indian and all our food is traditionally vegetarian so I get complete proteins and vit/mins when I'm at home but when I'm away at college I'm always struggling to find things that taste good and will get me enough protein. I'm def going to try making that burger...i love chickpeas :)

I think it would make 5-8 burger patties, depending on how big you made them of course.

In this case I think they are lower cal than my favorite gardenburger veggie burgers (they're pretty tiny). I will definitely try them! Thanks again for sharing.

Hmmm....maybe it is because they are categorized as "poultry"? Still doesn't make sense to me though!

Yes, that must be it! I find that in many cookbooks there's a chapter for "Meat", and a chapter entitled "Fish and Poultry".
I don't call fish "meat", but I'm certainly aware that it's still animal flesh.
Grr, it's so hard avoiding fish in Japan ...at least I avoid it at home now...

I second this - I visited Washington State University for the past three days and found they had a number of vegetarian-friendly meals (one night, they offered a tofu and vegetable stir fry).

Hello =)

Sorry if this is bad or illegal here lol, but I’m desperate to contact Stella McCartney- or her shop/designers- for a request (yes, I know- BIG leap of faith). Does anyone have any idea where I could find an address, or something of the sort? Also- if there is a Stella McCartney page here on the fashion spot- that would help too.

Thank you very much!

Due to TFS policies, no personal contact details are allowed to be given out. You'll have to do it the hard way, by finding a general contact address and working from there.

This is a great, handy resource for all us vegetarians/vegans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarianism

All that crap about how how we're endangering our sources of Iron, and Calcium? Not true! The article also cites it's sources, all of which are gold, or even supported/funded by the ADA.

A Scary Fact:

80%(!) of the agricultural land in America goes to feed these animals.

Half
of our water supply goes to hydrate these animals.

Animals raised to be eaten also consume 90% of the Soy Crop,(!!) 80% of the corn crop, and 70% of the grain crop.

Sources: http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/sb973/sb973.pdf
FYI: a GOVERNMENT institution released all of these facts.

You want to end world hunger but don't have enough food? Put everyone on a vegetarian/vegan diet and you've got your solution.
The amount of food we use to feed the animals that we eat is absolutely staggering.

When I learned about this, I was absolutely shocked and frustrated. Governments can be so full of crap, and the meat industry. Think about how much money is involved.

In addition, we also import a lot of grain from third world nations (who have people that are starving) to feed our animals, oh, and there is just so much more that I could get into, but bleugh, you can go find some good solid sources and read about it yourselves.

How sad, eh?

^It's definitely sad, and quite shocking as well. :ninja::doh: I wonder why the eco-friendlies haven't jumped all over this?

^ Hopefully, it is only a matter of time before they do! :)

I thought of starting an eco-friendly and animal friendly group in the city I live in. We don't have one yet. I think it would be great to start off small and then really get the word out there!

Thanks for the info, marsmars. :flower:

That's not necessarily true...at the end of 'An Inconvenient Truth' one of the first points to helping the environment is something along the lines of 'cut down or eliminate consumption of meat'. It's just that a lot of people (especially older ones) are so comfortable with their lifestyles it doesn't even cross their minds that what they eat affects the environment. If it does it's easy to dismiss. My parents have been eating meat for over 60 years, with all the propaganda that goes along with it can you blame them for being sceptical/ignorant of the anti-meat movement? :ninja:
