The Vegetarian & Vegan Thread

I need to vent!

I'm in Massachusetts visiting my boyfriend for the weekend, and last night his family decided to take us out for dinner. They wanted to go to this place called Wright's Chicken Farm (), a place that makes family-style chicken (basically everyone gets chicken, pasta, salad, and rolls). But they assured me that they had a small menu besides that, which would have fish (I'm a pescetarian). So we went...

Then when we were seated, the waitress asked "So, has everyone been here before?", and we all nodded (I had gone there once about a year and a half earlier, back before I went pescetarian). So then she took our drink orders, and she was about to walk away, and I said "Oh, could I get a menu? I don't eat chicken". She gave me the rudest look and said "Have you been here before?". I said "Yes, but I thought you had a menu". She snapped "We only have chicken here".

So, basically I ate a dinner of salad, rolls, and pasta. Made me upset, because I really needed some protein and was hoping for some salmon or at least cod... That waitress couldn't have been ruder! And we all seem to remember that a year and a half ago, when we all ate there together, the people next to us were eating fish!

What a rude inconsiderate cow. While I find it odd that a place with chicken in the title would serve fish, most places at least have an alternative option...

It sounds like you encountered someone who is a bit ignorant about vegetarians, pescetarians, etc., and she sized you up as a spoiled girl who is nothing more than a picky eater for vanity's sake. This is one of the most annoying misconceptions about non-meat eaters. I am sorry that you didn't enjoy your dinner. :( Trust me, we have all been there, I am sure.

I'm sorry you came across such a rude waitress. :(

My turn to vent. :D Isn't it annoying when you find meat hidden inside dishes that should be vegetarian-friendly? A month or so ago, my family ate at an Italian restaurant where I ordered mushroom and cheese ravioli (one of the few dishes that didn't include meat). When I received the meal, I found pieces of bacon hidden inside. :yuk: I don't see why putting bacon in a mushroom/cheese ravioli was necessary; not to mention, I'm not sure why they didn't feel the need to include on the menu that meat was in the dish.

This reminds me of when I ordered a fettuccini alfredo and the suace has little chucks of meat in it. I dont like sending things back or complaining so first I picked the chucks out, then slid each noodle in between my fingers to get any small pieces off before eating it. It was embaressing and ruined the meal

I completely agree, it's annoying and upsetting. I find sadly , that a lot of people, even good friends and family who aren't vegetarian will just not give a flying duck about you not eating meat. I'm a vegan so it's even harder, but one thing that my boyfriend and I do whenever we go out with non-veggo's is to ring the restaurant ahead and make sure they have meals or they can cook one for you. It can be annoying/embarrassing but I'd rather do that than ruin a night out by eating food I hate and then having to pay for it, or eating salad and bread all night.
Just remember the saying 'meek vegans' suffer' (well insert vegetarian if you're not vegan!).:flower: speak up and make people aware that you have certain needs.

i had somewhat of a horror story back when i was veggie, i was horribly unhealthy at the time so in the long run it might have been for the best but my mum made me a dish that she said didnt have any meat in it and i didnt even notice really that it did till after i was finished and she told me! i couldnt believe it! but again was probably for the best that i stopped soon after that happened.

I get annoyed when I find gelatin in certain meals. Usually I check out the ingredients properly but one time I didn't and bought a frozen vegetable pizza. When I checked again at home I noticed that it was made with gelatin. I haven't touched it ever since and don't know what to do with it. This happens quite often.

^ just give it to a friend. We had a whole chicken sitting in our freezer and gave that away to people who appreciated it. Or you can heat it up and hand it out to some homeless guys.

I ate a 'chocopie' yesterday and then thought "Crap, wasn't that marshmallow" and then thought "Crap, marshmallow means gelatin right?". Then I have this thai basil pesto which has rennet in. I'm not doing too well.

That's a great idea. I would do that myself if only the local homeless people weren't so suspicious.

its okay to give them food, just not money so they dont just buy drugs.. and take some big tough guy with you! then you'll be safe and the homeless with be fed!

Haha, what a good idea! Only yesterday I was sitting outside a cafe with my friend when two homeless guys walked by and asked for money. We noticed that there are a lot of homeless people in the neighborhood lately.

^ OT, but I once gave a homeless woman a lottery ticket. My boyfriend at the time literally screamed at me on the street because the pot was up to millions and millions (the highest it had ever been). He even told me to take it back...which I didn't. Hence, why he is my ex!

Can I ask you a question? I am a vegetarian, but not because I like animals (I mean, I like them, but that's not the reason) - for medical issues, so I do not eat fish. I
would like to know why some people refuse to eat meat and still eat fish? Where is the difference, in fact? Is that because red meat trade is perceived as more cruel? (Cod fishing is the most barbaric thing ever, and it's terrible for the environment), or is it because fish "meat" is not really seen as "meat" (don't know if that's clear).

Please, enlighten me :)

Its funny you should ask that, I'm a veggie as well and I dont eat fish.
I dont uderstand how some people can be completly vegetarian and also
include fish in their diet.
Personally, I could never do that. Then again I stopped eating meat because alll types of meat made me feel sick whenever I ate them. Its different for everybody though, and everyone has there own reasons. :flower:

I dont eat meat or fish, but I eat geletin and the pig stomach lining stuff found in some chocolate bars. Even though I know it's just as bad and its pretty gross, it just doesnt have the same affect on me as meat and fish.

I still eat fish. I guess the main reason I still eat fish is because my mom makes me.. she's convinced that I won't get enough protein if I quit eating fish as well. Plus I've always liked fish more than any other kind of meat, and its the healthiest. Anyway, eventually I plan to eliminate fish from my diet as well (probably once I'm on my own). :flower: Hope that kind of makes sence and answered your question!
