Tips on Bag Cleaning and Maintenance

hello!
i just bought a botkier medium trigger, the bag came with a little warning card saying that i should weatherproof my bag. what do you all recommend i use? should i take it to a professional? if yes, then can someone please recommend a good store in southern california??

agree! i usually carry one and pack one evening bag (which is usually an inexpensive clutch that i won't freak out about losing), but on longer trips i carry my most precious one, and then put the other w/ dustbag in a shopping bag that also carries my spring water and vogue.

For my leather bags, I use Kiwi brand Protect-All everyday water and stain protection for fine leather. I spray the product on the bag, let it sit for 3 hours, spray it again and let sit for another 1-2 hours. I've used it on my new leather (non-python) Silverado and on my Gerard Darel bag.

I use the same stuff and have been for years. I use it on all of my leather and suede. All of my shoes, coats, bags, etc. and have nothing but great results from it!

Last night I decided to water-proof some beige/light tan suede boots. I used the same stuff I use on all my bags and never have a problem with it.

However...the right boot came out darker than the left. I've never had a bag be discolored like this, do you think it's just because the boots are so light-colored? My other theory is: I used the last part of the can, I actually finished off what was left. The boot I did last is the darker one, is whatever is left at the bottom of the can not good? Is it like my hair gel, when it's at the end it refuses to form gel and only comes out liquid?

Anyone have similiar experiences with their bags? Are you not supposed to use the end of the can and I just didn't know it??

I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with white or light colored patent? How hard is it to maintain compared to a normal leather lgiht bag, like the paddington? Is getting is dirty pretty much inevetable?

well, I have one huge Bally patent leather white bag - from very thick leather and one big Chanel multi pocket white leather bag.
The patent doesn't get that dirty like the normal white leather from every day use, but I once left it next to a brown snake leather bag and the brown got some how on the white. I tried everything to clean it with no result. I should mention that it was very hot during that day.
The normal white leather looks at the edges like the white came off and one can see the leather color under.
The patent looks like new - it got a little yellowish but it's ok.

About the brown snakeskin getting on your bag -- I read on a chanel card that came with my bag that patent leather has a "magnetic" charectaristic and colors from other bags may miagrate. I could dig up the card and type it out exactley if your intrested.

My patent leather Bally bad didn't get scratched at all, but it was a sturdy Bally made from leather that was 5 mm thick, not fine Chanel.
I have the classic 2.55 lamb skin - which got scratches all over; the white multi pocket got scratches and dirty in a matter of 2 months /I sent it back to Chanel Paris to be repaired/ and tweed Chanel - which became kind of furry. The tweed feels like cashmere and leaves hair on my black clothes. I have also a black reissue, which I have not worn yet, but some people reported that the reissue gets scratched easily too. I love Chanel, but their quality is not the best.

Chanel recommended to me that using cashmere cloths with soap should clean marks off of white patent leather

i don't have issues with dirt getting in scratches for patent.. but then again i've never had anything white patent yet.
color transfer is a big issue for some reason though..
pen marks, etc need to be avoided at all costs..

I would think patent leather would be more impervious to stains than regular leather, like on the paddington, but because of the sheen is going to scratches more. obviously the color makes a huge difference. anyone who tells you that a white bag is easy to maintain is a liar! I've actually had SAs say that with a straight face. the best rule of thumb for white bags is to not get anything on them. seems obvious, but even if you have a good cleaner (and I have one), you risk stripping off the white since it, unlike other colors, tends to sit like a layer of paint on the leather. and once it's stripped off you can touch it up with shoe white, but it will always look inferior. that color transfer story is scary -- it would never have occurred to me.

mundo: that doesn't surprise me since suede is so delicate. for that reason most sprays specifically warn about using on suede. it sounds like you may have used more on the right boot or sprayed it too close so that the suede got wet. I think your only option is to spray the left boot more to make it darker. and I've never heard about end of the can problems, but perhaps when there's little liquid left, there isn't enough pressure to create an even spray of small droplets. I'm sorry -- that sucks.

I was caught in the rain and it got a few rainspots on the suede... how do I get those out?

i just bought a matching cole haan tiny bag and wallet and they are made out of a matte calf-skin type leather. is there anything i can put on them to keep them from getting scratched or marked up. its a lighter pinky-beige, and i'd think its close to like a marc jacobs calf-skin if that helps at all........

My friend needs some urgent help on her white paddington!!

She used it for around 4-5 times.. she found out.. the color from her jeans transferred to the back of the paddington.. they r not very obvious.. but looks slightly "blue" or "grey" compare to another side.

She tried to clean it with leather conditioner, soap + water, nail polish remover, hair spray etc... not a very good results!

It can lighten the Stain but not able to remove it completely.

Any one come across with similar problem with white paddington?? any trick to remove the stain?

but diorella had recommended the hermes saddle soap which is sold at all the hermes boutiques.. we haven't got a price quote on it yet though, but your friend might want to give it a try

I sprayed my bowler with appleguard, and the studs look the same on mine
