It was cold, it was wet, but inside London’s Big Sky Studios it was most definitely summer. Soft pastel backdrops, flowers and that hammock provided the setting for our June cover shoot with Kylie Minogue.
This was ELLE’s second cover with Kylie in 12 months, following the huge success of our May 2009 story ‘Sexy Kylie’. Ahead of her new album “Aphrodite” released in July, this was Kylie’s first big shoot of the campaign and the whole team were buzzed.
A big departure from our last cover which we shot in Paris (sexy, edgy and black leather hotpants!), we wanted to keep the feel and look very simple, and for Kylie’s natural beauty to shine through. The styling: think modern Geisha, corals and strong feminine shapes. From the white YSL cover outfit, to Chanel, Peter Pilotto and Antonio Beradi. The colour palette was made up of pastels and nudes. The hair was soft and simple. We started with a Hitchcock-esque structured do, finishing with full on Bardot. The end result is one of our most striking summer covers to date.
Kylie arrives just past 10am and is in good spirits. We hear she is immersed in the final stages of her new record, and having a blast making it. Stuart Price, who produced Madonna’s “Confessions on a Dancefloor” album, is Executive Producer on what is being described as her “best album yet”.
Working with Kylie is fun – she gets fashion and likes to experiment. She knows what works and seems to love to whole creative process. So from our side, she’s a dream. She giggles as she unties her swept back hair, which was wet when she fell asleep the night before – the result is a wild mane! We all giggle with her as hair stylist Daniel Hersheson looks on, pondering how to tame the beast. There is something intriguing about ‘normal Kylie’, away from the red carpet and layers of make-up. Her tiny elfin-like features are quite mesmerising, beautiful.
For the first set up we opt for the Peter Pilotto dress. Kylie pops over and spies my Mulberry briefcase, which she says she loves, and wants to get a similar one for Andreas. I never really thought of myself as a style icon, but there’s always a first time. Second set up is the cover look, the white YSL dress. Out comes the hammock.
We shoot until 6pm. Kylie happily chats to ELLE TV as the crew start packing away. I beaver away on Mac finalising our July cover, with an extremely talented American actress who is going to dominate 2010. Watch this space…
