US Vogue April 2015 : Serena Williams by Annie Leibovitz

Maybe I would have liked it if she was smiling. I like the background and the pose but she seems sad.

I kind of love this. The hair, the cool tones of the blues, the very stately look of the image - maybe it isn't the most lively cover, but there is something about it that speaks to Serena's position as a legendary athlete. It doesn't scream fashion magazine cover but it is a really well done portrait.

Serena scores the cover and Tami scores the only only-girl editorial? Yes please!

I actually like it... She looks strong and dominant! She's all business. Love the hair. There could've been a better shot but I'm okay with it. Not Vogue's best.

What I'm actually bothered about is the layout. The new font makes it look like an opening layout for an editorial. Secondly, I am not liking the thin style of the text. I need the bold fonts for my headlines because that draws attention. Also the letters are too condensed and the they're all placed too close to each other. This is giving me ELLE layout realness.

I'm sat here, hand over mouth, absolutely appalled at how horrendous this cover is. I genuinely can't even make out one positive element. I'm not even motivated by the fact it's Serena Williams because Vogue have done her a disservice with this one. On the other hand, the content does sound as if it holds some promise. Thanks Miss Dalloway, Handbag Queen & kroqjock - we've been waiting ages for this one!

Haha no one guessed correctly.

The arm movement is bad; it's just like this month's Vanity Fair with Robin Wright's in-movement arms. Like what is her arm in front doing? Scratching her crotch? Holding a bag? A tennis ball?

It'll disappoint everyone beyond the cover that Serena only has ONE photo in her article while the non-Kardashian sister hogs an entire editorial with Bieber.

At first glance I thought the cover was terrible, however, seeing the larger scan, I got to say I really love it!
There's a whole bad a** - big hair Chaka Khan vibe here.

The styling is simple but that really works with Serena.
I've been hating on US Vogue for months now and I'm floored I actually like anything from them or Leibovitz.

Def much better now that I see a larger version of the cover!

REVIEW TIME! She's not the only one that's got the issue, don'tcha know.

#5 - The Divine Mrs. Cumberbatch (2 pg)
PH: Annie Leibovitz
Style: None
Celebs: Sophie Hunter, Maria Grazia Chirui, Pierpaolo Piccio

Another month, another attempt at shoving the non-Kardashian sister up our throats and into our ears. RESIST THE URGE!!!

Thanks Kroqjock! Does Sophie Hunter's edit have a shot of her wedding dress? That'd be nice. Also, cannot wait to see Cameron Russell's shots, she's got a tremendous figure and about the only girl who actually make sense for that editorial.

Oh and I'll publicly eat crow because someone in the cover rumor thread had said that it was strange there hadn't been a person of color in a few months and I argued that that wasn't uncommon for Vogue and here Vogue shuts me up. Guess they are embracing diversity more and more.

On another note that LA stories headlines screams teen vogue.its one thing to embrace pop culture it's another thing to pathetically try to be hip a la current madonna!

This is a great time for Serena to be on the cover, considering everything that happened at Indian Wells.
Looking forward to seeing Cass Bird's ed with Ellen Page as well.

Also, cannot wait to see Cameron Russell's shots, she's got a tremendous figure and about the only girl who actually make sense for that editorial.
Perhaps I'm just being ignorant, but how do you know that only Cameron makes sense for that ed if you haven't seen it already?

Love this cover. Serna looks great and the focus is only on her.
Great body and face lines. The hair makes a great contrast to the dress/background colours.

The good: They didn't lighten her skin or pull her hair back or straighten it.

I just wish the image was more powerful and striking. They could have done something really iconic and memorable like the Marion Jones cover in 2001. Apparently Leibovitz is no longer capable of making such images. Did they have Serena stand against a wall for 5 seconds to grab a snap? What is that arm doing in front?? And it's sad to hear she only has one photo inside. So much laziness.

I wish they had Bruce Weber doing covers. His images are warm, friendly, very Americana, and he knows how to make an image look iconic and simple. Plus, Vogue wouldn't have to spend all that money for post-production work that they do with Leibovitz and Testino. Try him out, Vogue!

If Serena only has 1 shot, maybe she wasn't really meant for the cover? A rather last minute decision?
