US Vogue March 2007 : Jennifer Hudson by Annie Leibovitz

Fact of the matter is, despite how talented they are as actresses, Maggie and Chloe will never really appeal to the every woman buying US Vouge- they are way too edgy (aesthetically, neither are traditionally beautiful either). American Vouge is not at all about edgy, as it reflects American style on the whole, which is an almost Patrician, conservative approach to fashion. To a reader of American Vouge, Sienna Miller pushes the fashion envelope, and her style is boring to many fashion insiders. Ladies like that will be on the cover of Nylon or i-D, maybe even W or Vouge Italia. But American Vouge? That's a little far fetched.

^agree which is unfortunate cuz new york women are the best dressers in the world nd look up to girls like that and take cues from them(traina sisters good example) and yet mag is mostly aimed at americans who think that renee and reese are style icons:(

A lot of people are bringing up the fact that Jennifer has no style, not high fashion, etc. Well she wouldn't be the first. Vogue has put a lot of people on their cover who I find questionable. I'm not particularly happy to see Jennifer on the cover, but she's definitely gone through a major fashion transformation. I remember laughing at the the outfits she wore on AI. I don't care if her current look is aided by a stylist. It's definitely an improvement and she looks good.

I've went through this entire thread, and I haven't seen this. So I don't know why you're bringing this up.

I prefer Jennifer Hudson to, say, Lou Doillon and those other haughty Euro-chicks who throw on crap and, like the emperors new clothes, everyone pretends to "get it," when really they just wear stupid outfits.

Well excuse me, but whats wrong with our society is individuals like yourself who use your incredibly profound vocabulary to describe Kate Hudson as a "NEW ***ed face".

The fashion industry is a very specific about what is "chic" and what is in fashion. People don't associate Jennifer Hudson with Vogue, not because of her novelty or because shes not particularly thin - its because she has no sense of style and she isn't the emodiement of a Vogue covergirl.

It's simple.

So my description of Kate Hudson is what's bothering you most? Well i can't help you with that, but I can say that as a black woman I have had to embrace a VERY homogenized view of beauty all my life and especially growing up in the 80's, so excuse me if I find Having Jennifer Hudson on the cover to be A GOOD THING. She's a talented celebrity, and hasn't vogue been about this for the past decade?
And about Jennifer not being the embodiement of the vogue girl, tell that to all the women out there of different races, cultures, sizes and ages who faithfully buy this fashion "bible" every month. Who are you to say what the embodiement of a vogue woman is?

Naomi is one of the most talented actresses working in Hollywood right now.In fact, sometimes I find her even more versatile and talented than Nicole Kidman, every single movies she's been in got amazing reviews. She's also very fashion forward with her bold choices from givenchy ,lanvin ,etc.If anyone,Naomi deserves it much more that a girl who's been in just one movie!
Another actress who I think is long overdue for a Vogue cover is Maggie Gyllenhaal. She's been nominated so many times for various awards, amazing actress and has her own unique style.
and last but not least, miss Chloe Sevigny, the most innovative dresser of our time in America who also happened to starred in some of the award-nominated and citically acclaimed films.

i completely agree!!
i prefer Naomi to Nicole these days, she's a fantastic actress and her look is very fresh and modern.
and i would like to see Maggie or Chloe on the cover much more than Jennifer Hudson:yuk:

O RLY Anna Wint-our.

The last black woman on the cover before Halle must have been Oprah. someone correct me if i'm incorrect.

Wasn't Oprah last on the cover in 1996 or 1997?

Good for Jennifer! It's about time Anna put a Black woman on the cover! :flower:

I think it's very.....INTERESTING that some are saying that Jennifer shouldn't be on the cover because she has no sense of style, when mags like Vogue have had women on their covers whose "sense of style" is given to them by celeb stylists.

Excuses....excuses.

wow, she clearly made it! i mean, having a vogue cover is really huge, especially for her.

but i bet ALT had a big influence on that, he's besotted with her. i just wonder if that means we'll have to see rachel roy on the cover next, she's another darling of his....

I agree. It's like more than one black model cannot appear in the magazine or it will implode(or Anna's head will). Jennifer Lopez should have gotten that cover much sooner. Like her or not, she has influenced fashion and beauty. who didn't want that bronzed golden look she had going on?:innocent: and the woman can work a look and commit to it like no other...

ITA, but people won't acknowledge this pink elephant in the room.

Also, when Naomi appeared on the cover back in the day, didn't Ms. Wintour write an explanation as to why she was chosen in her editor's letter?

I'm sorry. I just don't buy the excuse that Blacks on magazine covers do not sell. Last year, WWD had several articles stating that Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Nicole Ritchie covers sold VERY well. Furthermore, with all of the white celebs/models that are on the covers of these magazines, it's not helping because the magazine industry has been slumping. Does that mean no more white faces on covers?

^I honestly don't think Anna's cover choices have anything to do with race. First of all, the cover celeb is almost always a movie actress - which would disqualify Nicole Richie and Alicia Keys (barring her recently released first film). When it comes to Beyonce, she hasn't really done any noteworthy movies besides Dreamgirls, which would put her on the same level as Jennifer Hudson. What probably pushed Hudson over the edge was all the Oscar talk, and winning those awards. I think Anna sees that Hudson has the potential to become a great actress like Halle Berry; Beyonce, not so much.

beyonce was already featured on the cover of the special "fashion rocks" issue alongside dreamgirls co-star jamie foxx. while it's not exactly comparable to scoring a vogue cover, it's certainly an accomplishment on the part of beyonce. the cover featured two black celebrities and would futher disqualify the statement that anna's cover choices are biased against blacks (especially considering how much influence she had over the entire "fashion rocks" project which also featured artists like kanye west, common, john legend, etc.).

jennifer hudson seems like a great, talented and fresh new face to feature.

hmm...

April 1994: Brandi Q is featured alonside two white models
May 1996: Naomi is given the inside flap of a foldout cover, enraging some Vogue readers at the time (I'm sorry, but a blurry shot of Niki Taylor over a beautiful shot of Omi?)
July 1997: Kiara Kabukuru (with a self-applauding letter by Anna inside, but later she says that the issue does not sell well...do many July issues sell as well as other ones?)
October 1998: Oprah
Novemeber 1999: Iman on the front cover with three other supermodels (of a huge special foldout cover)
December 2002: Halle Barry
May 2005: Liya Kebede

I might have missed some, but I wanted to run down Vogue's history a bit in case anyone is not clear.

Oh duh!! Marion Jones had a January cover!

Come to think of it, I'm glad that Jennifer could possibly be on the March cover. But I agree with the person who suggested that seeing is believing (Vogue might just end up putting someone else on the cover). I guess all the Dreamgirls would be neat (better than the Presley clan that appeared a few years ago, ha ha ha).

Too much hype on Jennifer right now, I honestly think she will never do much after this. :)

Scary Spice was also included on a Vogue cover with the rest of her group.

Other than that, the only Black model to ever land the March cover was Sheila Johnson back in 1980. The only September cover was Naomi back in 1989.
