US Vogue November 2020 : Naomi Campbell by Ethan James Green

Naomi Campbell taking us behind-the-scenes of the cover shoot:

Interesting that she’s saying she wanted this shoot to be about family and yet she never mentions any of the other persons who are part of this shoot.

She’s inadvertently telling on herself. The rebranding attempt is truly half-***ed. Does anyone in their right mind believe she’s been speaking truth to power and looking out for her fellow models for the past few decades? I am sure she’s capable of change and I’m not saying she hasn’t genuinely changed her behavior, but I wish she’d stop trying to rewrite history and just own the problematic diva reputation as part of her past.

She’s a legend, one of the greatest models ever, and she has nothing to prove.

Wow, Naomi is really going above and beyond to promote this cover - I can see her wanting it to be the best-selling issue of 2020. Makes it so much harder for the next model or celebrity who will appear on the cover. LOL. They'd have to put in all this much effort and more to promote their cover.

Obviously part of the reason why she's so extra is to ruffle up some feathers with Edward. She hardly mentioned Anna for years and now she's referring to her almost mentor-like. Not buying it. I hope there's at least a fat cheque at the end of the rainbow for all this campaigning.

man, she can sound obnoxious.
this said, you can easily tell that she’s being sincere when talking about digital photography and working with new teams whereas all the rest is a little bit of a** licking and bs.

also, go easy on the Botox sweetie.

In the video, when she mentioned working with the greatest editors, it shows a photo of her and Edward first, before Anna. I thought that was a subtle dig at Anna, though I’m sure Naomi herself wasn’t responsible.

TBH, US Vogue still stand out because it has managed to maintain it identity. It will never reach the level of excellence it has for years but it’s still above a lot of publications. It still has it identity.

Seeing ELLE, HB and the rest makes even cherish US Vogue now because it’s still the only US publication worth of interest now.

I love how in the Bella ed, they have managed to hide her face and therefore her lack of expression. It’s a good story and overall it’s a decent issue.

I’m always intrigued by how Naomi always only mention her firsts covers. She is indeed a model who did a lot of firsts but judging only by the video, you could believe that she only did Vogue in 1989 and now. It’s interesting that she mentioned working with Anna at UK Vogue and so it makes her being on the September 1989 cover less random buy she has this thing about her covers. Even VP. She had many covers but she never claim them.

You are reading a bit too much into it considering the amount time Anna is mentioned and showed in the video.

OMG I held this issue on my hand today and it’s SO thin!!!
I put it back coz it gave me second thoughts.
I mean, I’ve see US Vogue editions as thin but I thought advertisements wise and content and also due to the fact that it’s her, the issue would be more substantial!

I bought it the other day and I have to agree it’s so disappointing that it’s so thin, it takes away from the impact of the issue and how much more of a moment it should be to hold in your hands.

I had the same feeling with the Ashley Graham cover & Lizzo too, such thin issues.

At least British Vogue is usually an average decent magazine with plenty of adds etc, even their pandemic ones were quite thick in comparison to its American counterpart.

At the same time vogue us does not allow the photo shoots anymore to breathe and have more space.... naomi's story is not a solo one she shares the spotlight even tho it is about her... then the issue has an awfully designed story starring Bella Hadid and that is pretty much it.

This magazine is not about photography and quite frankly not even sure about what it is. Is it in such dire state that they can't bump up the page # with additional writing and give the photography more space? Not to forget it is printed on some quite thin and cheap paper which makes it look even more thinner...

Do they even show this to Wintour and she's actually okay with a magazine looking that miserably ... this goes on for years now with VOGUE US. It was never heavily focused on photography like Vogue Italia but this is just sad tbh. It leaves no magic behind for the reader anymore.

Paper costs went way up in the mid-90s leading to the closure of many magazines. And they've stayed high ever since.
Printing a magazine like Vogue costs at least $15K per 10,000 copies printed (and that's assuming a Conde discount). Now multiply that by vogue's circulation figures per month. The cost can be astronomical. and that doesn't even include distribution costs or the costs incurred when newsstands send back unsold magazines.

American magazines could make some savings in the print process by reverting to the old US A4 format, instead of that ridiculous size that was introduced as part of making print seem "premium".

Once one title did it, the rest followed, but in the end, readers don't really care whether the magazine is one inch wider than before, and for anyone selling the idea that it makes an issue seem more 'collectible', tell that to the hardcore collectors who have to make the older size and newer size issues sit together harmoniously.
