Vogue Germany January 2013 : Jessica Chastain by Bruce Weber

Despite the vivid red color, the text (sex & sensibility - interesting... Of course it stars Kate Upton :innocent:) and the 80s feel, it all comes together for me! I like her as an actress, she seems very versatile, she looked so different in The Help. But I agree she does not dress 'great' at events & red carpet...

I've never been impressed with or convinced of Jessica Chastain's status as a fashion icon.

Are they really trying to portray her as a fashion icon? I don't think they are.

yeah, although I can definitely relate to the confusion once publications get too fond of a specific actress.. I didn't get Jessica either, especially if you look at her looks or fashion choices like Gandharvika mentioned, so if you start seeing her on AnOther, W, Vogue, you start wondering what's it all about.. thing is, I think the fascination is actually on her acting skills, the energy she evokes in editorials and the way she carries herself on the red carpet, I thought every single one of her appearances at Cannes this year were just stunning.. it's not even about the dresses but the nonchalance and elegance she has, I think. When I saw her there I thought okay, that's why she's invading all the magazines.

^ I think that's why she's so popular, as well. If you think about it she really is unusual for an actress in that she had her breakout role when she was about 34. Which is really something amazing for an actress who isn't a character actress.

I like her facial expression but the excessive red fabric is a no.

Sure they are.

The jury is still out on Vogue Germany specifically since I was speaking more generally when it comes to fashion and fashion magazines. Others have already listed her most recent appearances (W, AnOther, Vogue Italia, Marie Claire). She was even on the cover of Vanity Fair's most recent style issue and part of their best dressed list. Let's not forget her recent gig as the face of YSL's Manifesto. She also gets heaps of coverage on her red carpet style.

They do the same with many actresses, I don't think getting lots of coverage in fashion magazines equates to being considered an icon, even in such a fickle industry.

Well, that's the difference between her and other actresses. She is a current fashion darling. Others are not.

i'm sure A LOT of people in germany don't even know who she is. (i only recently googled her myself and recognized her because i watched tree of life, but other than that no idea...)
she's just nobody people talk about here. i don't mind the cover itself, i quite like it, but i wonder what's the point of having a celeb on the cover when 80% of the people you want to appeal to at the newsstands don't know her.

^ If nobody knows her, I guess the point of putting her on a magazine is to get people to know her.

Although Bruce's work with B&W is flawless, but when he works with bright bold colors, he really shines. This cover is no exception! Beautifully styled and with just a hint of retro to it.

Good lord, why did they have Mrs. Patmore make that face? She's a pretty lady, but those are not terribly flattering pictures of her. The rest of the Downton cast looks really great though! And what a beautiful editorial with Jessica and Omar, they look so great together.
