Thoughts about the eds in Vogue Italia March 2011:
A Precious Glam (Carmen Kass by Miles Aldridge and styled by Alice Gentilucci) - Superb! Great photography, clothes, hair
heart
, make up, sets/settings and mood!
It’s All About Couture (Stella Tennant by Paolo Roversi and styled by Edward Enninful) - I have to confess, Stella Tennant is one of those models that I don't always "get." but I get her here.
the distortion effect and great selections from the couture collections, I sooo want to touch some of those items!
Wasted Luxury (Julia Saner, Milou van Groesen and Saskia de Brauw by Steven Meisel and styled by Panos Yiapanis) - I like the set and the ed is not bad or anything, just kinda flat.
Vogue Suggestions (Numerous Models by Phil Poynter) - I don't
want to like this ed, but I do; over the years I have built up a dislike of eds and campaigns featuring a bunch of slackers slacking and I am not looking to be cured of this prejudice, but I like this ed and think that it is one of the standouts in the issue. I am very impressed with how Poynter was able to wrangle several models and produce images that are on point, too often when I see multi-model eds and campaigns, there's usually one or two off things in the image like one of the models being out of character or a styling incongruity.
And the Winner is: Ann Ward (Ann Ward by Ellen von Unwerth and styled by Sheila Single) - My first thought was that the ed was sub-par, my second one was that if you take out that horrible picture of Ann on all fours, then, while not great, it is actually a fairly decent ed. Then I saw a
video of the shoot and
screencaps and now I am scratching my head, because assuming that someone was snapping a camera, there was much better stuff than what was actually selected for the issue.
Karen Elson - (Karen Elson by Sam Taylor-Wood and styled by Panos Yiapanis) - I like the idea of this ed better than the ed itself. I think that I would have liked this ed better earlier in the season when the Prada collection was fresher or I would have liked it in this issue if another collection that has not been so heavily editorialized, like Rick Owens or Haider Ackermann, was selected.
Starring: Amber Valletta (Amber Valletta by Craig McDean and Edward Enninful) - Amber Valletta is another one that I have to confess to not always getting, but this much I do know, you can't go wrong with Amber Valletta in a big, blond wig with a winged-eye.
Urban Glam - (Elisa Sednaoui by Stephane Sednaoui and styled by Victoria Bartlett) - This is a decent ed and I like the outdoor setting, I think that it would have been considerably better if it had been simplified, namely lose the wires.
This is definitely a good issue, Vogue Italia seems to be on a roll lately, and if some different decisions were made regarding the von Unwerth, Sednaoui and Taylor-Wood eds, this would have been a stellar issue. I am not necessarily saying that these were the worst eds of the issue, but these were the ones that had the potential to be considerably better.
Phil Poynter gets the MVP award for this issue and Edward Enninful, Miles Aldridge and Alice Gentilucci get honorable mentions.
