Vogue Italia May 2009 : Sasha Pivovarova by Steven Meisel

What a weird comment. Of course it's the cover. And it's FAR from poorly done.

Maybe she was refering to the flowers.

I mean those flowers really makes the whole cover looks kinda mmmm I don't even know how it looks like actualy...
it's not usual of VI so maybe thats why she thought that wasn't the cover !

anyway, last month with Eliza, the cover had a very morrocan vibe as well because of the turban and this month as well.
Meisel must be in an arabic phase.

this is also what I don't like about this cover it reminds me somehow of last month cover.

and the flowers, THE FLOWERS

But i think is better Morroco story in morroco no in studio and theecenografy is bad and cheap

I agree on the cheapness, some shots look a wee bit similar to what Paul
Rowland did a while back ago with his Supreme girls for the show package as
well, again I feel Meisel could do better :flower:

thankss surrealseven and yea you are rigth do you speak about this no?

nice cover! but i think it could have been much better without that flower thingy going on. ;) :)

But odalisks were a part of Moroccan luxury...

I agree that he is probably not inspired by the Jan Wiegers painting as I said before.
But Sasha's pose in the last pic is just screaming 'odalisk' to me. But eacht to their own of course :flower:

I think it's pretty obvious that Sasha pose is inspired by the odalisque for the last pic !
Of course he combined his impression of Morocco with his own aesthetics but the poses are very reminiscent of it.

good eye Mikel :flower:

Ok I agree the last is quite obvious Meisel is inspired by the Ingres painting, not the Jan Wiegers painting, but anyway good eye again, mikel :flower:

Yup exactly testinofan, they are both studio shots as well which I feel
can cheapen the Moroccan luxury feel for some shots, outdoor shots would be great :flower:

I like the cover, great styling and colors, I think the flowers might look good in reality...
The main ed is fantastic! The theme, the setting, the styling, everything looks amazing!

AMAZING ED.!!! sasha never fails to impress. ;) great job meisel!!!

WOW!! i loove the cover, it looks like a painter's masterpiece!! i'm not feeling the ed though, it'll probably grow on me...

The cover picture itself is beautiful but that "something" that was photoshopped ruins it for me sorry. Nice colours, great Sasha but the cover is a no. Also the font is ugly.

The editorial is good but it reminds me of Vogue Italia March 2007. Actually it's pretty much the same to me and I don't like it when Meisel does that with Sasha only because everyone knows she would look good in any picture with any theme he chooses her to spice up the not so original shoots. That's just my opinion.

Thank god the styling is so extraordinary.

wonder who the boy (boys?) in Sasha's edit is?
I think they are Jeremy Simpson and Nate Gill, both from Major, but the eye makeup is quite misleading. Maybe you might want to check

i don't get this ...

why would it be bad ? it's not like meisel is repeating himself. he certainly had the same approach about working on a strong color scheme and composition for both stories. but that's all i see. there's no references here to design or geometry - that i saw on first sight, at least.
and unlike in memphis, i think here the styling and composition of photo in general work perfectly well together. it's really easy to read ... and less more 'eyes-schocking' that memphis intentions.

and i seriously don't understand why it would be bad a photographer has a style ...

^Not the editorial but Sasha only-girl with gaudy colours and different lights lying there looking at you out of the magazine similar poses. It's not like I compared the editorial two hours and made a similarities- and differences chart an it just feels too similar for me even if I'm the only one. I just don't need to see that again.

Photographer and style? That's what I don't get because I didn't write anything about his style since I think Meisel doesn't really have a signature style.

ETA: BerlinRocks I researched for the Memphis Belle Epoque editorial and I have to admit they aren't really similar but I just had those two pictures where Sasha was lying in my mind and yeah that's where it came from. Maybe I'm just not as happy about Sasha as I thought I would be.

Echoes the Supreme show package for sure, but a stunning set. I just wish the Ingres-inspired shot was the cover instead...the extra flower prints make it seem like he has flaws in the photograph that need to be hidden.
