W MARCH 2006: daria, raquel, sasha, stam, roversi....
BEST EDIT 'la piage' daria shot by thompson in resort/boating looks. looks like palm beach but storyline is riviera. thompson channels bruce weber's 80s style here, closest to some of his ralph palm beach campaigns. thompson might not me the most individual or innovative photog but he's more than up the task here. daria's face has looked better but alain pichon's side-parted hair is perfectly kath hepburn or lauren bacall. these ea-faring B&W's evoke that 40s glamour perfectly- as ralph's 80s polo often evoked days gone by. edit begins with a striking topless daria pic. Im not the biggest daria fan but her modelling succeeeds wonderfully here abetted by thompson's pics and the storybook palm beach boat fantasy. karl templer styled its traditional in the extreme and while not novel like white's raquel styling, to my taste these are the best clothes & looks in sum in this issue. simple resort/ holiday pioeces but totally satisfying: hermes linen 3 pc suit. chanel tweed coat + lacoste shirt; st john trench/burberry cardigan; eres bikini; herrera blouse vest & pants- perfctly palm beach. ck linen shirt; burberry leather trench & mailoot-superb. ck cardigan 7 shots - marvelous. RL white pnats & sweater & white/brown striped shirt. armani suit + brooks bros. shirt. bottega jacket pants shirt. admittedly these looks are by far the closest o my personal style & worldview of anything in this issue. perhaps some of you will prefer alex whites looks on raquel, stam & sasha. each element in this daria/thompson edit works together so well that the story is greater than its parts. thompson came through with the weber pics, templer's style is awesome, he & thiompson deservbe bonuses, and daria really shiones in the hepburn role- one doesnt see her that much lately but work like this speaks eloquently of her status as a top 10 model in 2006 when she chooses to be seen. great great story. 9 of 10.
best edit #2 'la sauvage' raquel zimmerman shot by david sims in some wild, punky, sexy, deconstructed & somewhat 80s looks. Im a big fan of sims. compared to meisel's us vogue work with raquel,. sims does a much better job here. raquel is hot shes active, untamed, gesticulaing, every inch the supermodel. alex white styled here, great again, these looks are a lot more in your face than the mcdean edit above and the rapore between raquel & sims in white's electric looks is impressive. top looks incl LV bathing suit, punky & bondage, mcqueen sheer black crepe dress very black widow, dior vest 7 briefs deconstructed powerful neutrals; sander yellow jumpsuit jumps opff teh page; stella catsuit meow! lanvin electric blue blouse 7 slim cut silk pants perfect 2006 look; chloe orange coat + rooster orange wig very sprouse! gucci green dress so sexy on raquel! LV fuschia top + black skirt. celine royal blue dress; versace metalli swimsuit. really sexy looks, best of 70s/80s updated to 2006. raquel is broadcasting so hot here & sims brought a lot of that out of her, sexy & eye-popping edit. 8 of 10.
best edit #3: 'noir & blanc' sasha pivovarova & jessica stam shot by craig mcdean. stam is cute of course but sasha is totally hypnotic here. initially sasha looked like a dirty girl but as she has moved to the top 5 or so models in the world she is just captivating versatile, lolita-like & deadly sexy all at once. she's wearing cutler & grosse horn-rims in many of these pics, a hottie in hornrims so hot. alex white styled she did good work & its so effortless you might not notice at first but she chose some sweet looks & they are presented so well. hi-lites incl sasha in baenciaga baby doll dress; stam in gaultier ivory black jacket & pants, stam in armai navy dress, stam in lanvin coat/blouse/tie, sasha in gucci boots, sasha in marc babydoll dessm, sasha in comme de garcons jacket & shorts. there are some vivid B&W pics as backdrops here, 1968 paris student riots & castro from early 60's. imagine discussing thise topics with sasha & stam! or not. but mcdean used these stark images well & his studio compositions here are superb, wringing emotional weight out of the most seemingly off hand stagecraft. just an exceelnt edit in every way, girls, clothes, pics, styling and composituions. mcdean is so solid & so dependable. 7.8 of 10.
edit #4: : irina lazareanu, ilona kuodiene, ana nocon & flavia oliviera shot by paolo roversi. these are heavily color saturated images, like some recent roversi edits these images work as much or even moreso as tonal, abstract artworks. to the degree the models are seen in some pictures they are interesting. cant exactly tell who's who but i think irina & ilona are the standouts? lori goldstein styled, it must be something of a challenge to sort the looks when roversi is going to transform the images so much via his aesthetic. there are a few pieces of special interest: tripp jeans by daang goodman; moschino top & shorts; ferre silk dress; misoni dress. the looks are strong, the girls are interesting, teh pictures are beautiful. so on pure aesthetics these are wonderful images, roversi is surely among the 5 or so best fashion photogs working, yet in a strict 'fashion mag models' editioial sense, this edit is not as satisfying as soem more diect shoots would be. it depends what you want out of a fashioon mag or story. artistically thes eare very strong images. if you just want pretty girls in easy clothes thsi may frystrate you. personally i think its good & it shows that W is far & away the class of american fashion mags to present high arty edits like this. 7.75 of 10.
COVER: kate moss by mcdean in midnight blue rochas dress. the ultimate elegant kate, still disco electric underneath & furrowing like a lioness. W s tops for putting kate on the cover & inside svereal times since that silly Mirror snuff fest. fantastic hair by souleiman & makeup by pieroni. mcdean's covers are probably better than thompson's & his w & vogue edits are pure class pretty much everytime. strong cover which symbolizes the quality magazine inside.
great ads:
armani with marina perez. outstanding campaign from clothes to pics to marina to layout & vibe- armani is at the top level of design & image for about 30 years now & anyone who says he's lost it doesnt know what theyre looking at.
kate moss in stella bikini. jesus. kate is way hotter than ANY mom has a right to be! and this bikini [kind of hermes chain rip off] is one of best stella pieces Ive seen. smokin!!!
D&G with gemma, snejana, anja, julia......? cant tell whos who and what the hey theyre doing in the barn but girl on girl is #1 and these are some of the best ads & images of 2006. holla.
* D&G part 2 with stam? trentini? sheer sundresses & cute girls in boudoir. hot again.
good ads:
diana dondoe for DK. abysmal clothes but diana might be the best brunette model of 2006. LOVE her!
* diana for moschino. much better ad, concept [spanish bodega!] clothes & pic than DK. moschino's got it!!
daria for chanel in LA. her body looks anorectic here but i like the blithe rodeo shopping fantasy vista & KL has great pics, styling & imaging.
mariacarla for YSL. m/c is stunning in bolero look. karen elson is horrid with pink eye in pink dress. clock ticking?
natalia v for ck. Im generally over nativodi at this point yet these are strong photos [testino?] and the branding/imaging is top shelf as CK often is. new mexican vibe.
nieman's with luca & marina. nice hamptons dune backdrops. looks vary & both girls have looked better but the light & these pics are happy & chic. luca has cute monkey ears.
barneys with malgosia? i think it's she? unbelieveable she looks fantastic and these are clean & fresh 2006 white ads. hot.
* is that malgosia in sander too? more amphibean again and not as good as the barneys but still striking.
raquel for max mara. average clothes but raquel is smouldering . love that blonde monkey,.
valentina for ralph. beautiful girl, clean pic, white sun dress & navy aviator bag. excellent imaging as usual.
hermes with sasha? very 70s paris, me likey. hermes always on the money with the luxe & dreamy imaging.
anja for tod's. slightly rote ad but anja is so good she makes it work. hermes' is mote imaginative but anja is hotty hot.
mariacarla for blumarine. i like her blonde hair despite what everyone else says. cute ads & m/c is wonderful.
julia for boss. flat layout & just passing clothes but juklis is STILL the best model in 2006 imo!! her face & body are outrageous here!!
gemma for burberry. is it just me but since sasha took off, doesnt gemma just look 'pretty' while sasha is sexy, involving, sexier, and deeper psychologically? i think so!! sasha has usurped gemma?
euguenia for celine decent clothes & ad but euguenia is smashing!! love her still.
caroline winberg for herrera. sleek evening look, decent imaging bur winberg is STILL my #2 blonde after julia! is there no justice??

balenciaga with lily d, erin wasson, hana, trentini gemma, raquel. very distinct and elegant ad pic & looks. highly effective imaging, brandiing. & perspective.

meg white for marc jacobs. only see her pale calves facedown on ground. is she dead? actually these are more interesting than many recent marc/teller ads but mostly for the mystery, earth tones & arty composition. actually makes one excited to see the other teller/meg ads.
carmen kass for kors. i dont think much of kors ads and carmen looks striated & beat up in swim here. surely they have better carmen swim pics than this?
emina for iceberg. shame about the clothes but i am in love with emina. actually i think shes even better than dondoe, i guess emina is the #1 brunette in 2006.
bad ads:
gisele for LV. awful image here, gis looks like sick green lizard & her lips are shiny blood red. this campaign is schizo- the swim suit pic was hot but this is abysmal.
lisa cant for j mendel. series of lisa she looks absolutely dead/ghostly. and the 'designs' are not much better, cant has worn badly on me, i think shes out.
dkny. the fake newspaper gimmick was ok the 1st time but now it makes me sick. and even rosie whitely cant save these awful 'designs' and ads.
angie lindvall for fendi. time was angie seemed flawless. no more these are blah ads, she looks over & done.
daria for belstaff. what kind of crap 80s leather cycle jacket is this? daria looks ok but its insulting to see her in a 'thriller' style leather jacket. puke.
sara ziff for cole haan. used to love sara very under-rated waspy modern usa gal, but cole haan ads will crap the best girls & she looks stepford here. come back ziffy!
VERDICT: 4 exceptional edits in this big march issue assert once again that W is far & away america's best fashion & style magazine. daria & thompson's palm beach resort edit was the most traditional and timeless & to me also the best. sims shot raquel in an eye-opening edit that is punky, sexy, wild, 80s & modern too. raquel is a powerhouse. roversi's edit was pure art with saturated tonal values and a dreamy nocturnal vibe. mcdean did fabulous work with sasha & stam in a more repertorial yet also psychological setpiece; and the styling of templer & white was superb in their stories. mcdean's kate cover also was strong. in this jumbo march ish there was also great shopping and some interesting personality/showbiz/arts profiles rounding out this wonderful W. TWO EFFUSIVE THUMBS UP the models, clothes & photography in this W are the best in an american magazine, can march vogue or bazaar possibly match this standard? hard to believe.
