Whale Rider's 16-year-old actress pregnant with first child!!

Castle-Hughes, who'd endured 90-plus-degree heat for that day's filming, laughs and adds, "All I know is that after this, I'm never having a child!"

...if only she had stuck with that thought!

Even if she is a mature 16 year old, I still feel that this is way too young to have a baby.

They started dating when she was 14 and he was 17? Shouldn't that be illegal? Anyone know what the age of consent is in NZ?

Wow...that article is just...So this means when her baby brother or sister is born, and after mum gives birth..Her mothers newborn baby will be an aunt or uncle to her baby...Weird..:yuk:

Its not like she would of planned it, so good on her for taking responsibility!

There are no guarantees at any age. Parenting is tough whether you are 16 or 30. In fact I think she would probably have more energy to deal with a baby at 16 than any 30 year old...

It is not an ideal situation, but she will be OK. I wish her all the best!

The age for consent in New Zealand is 16 and she is.

I know it seems sort of controversial to me having a child at this age, but-- maybe she's gonna be okay. It might make her really happy and maybe she'll be a great mother. Unlike most actresses/actors, she may be mature...

To say she'd never have a child and then going back on that a few months after and saying she's pregnant makes it sound like an idiotic mistake...

^^ and in New Zealand I haven't met many intelligent mature girls at all...it's rather pathetic. The same as the UK really.

I highly, highly doubt that they abstained from having sex until she was 16 if they started dating when she was 14.

I'd hate to think that she actually got pregnant on purpose and it was a planned pregnancy so I guess I'll put it down to a big ooops. It did sound like her career was going quite well so here's hoping that continues and she's able to support herself and the baby. Any clue what her bf does?

16???!!!!
there was this girl from my school who got married and pregnant at 16. she was really excited about having the baby at first, but then in the end she completely fell apart
i'm barely 17, and the thought of having kids scares the crap out of me!!!

Wow I would never have a baby at that age, NEVER!

she gave such a mature preformance in whale rider- didn't expect something this stupid!

I wouldn't do it but that isn't the point.

The point is that we are so stuck in our westernised take on things that everything 'other' seems mad, even if it isn't.

Girls consentually marry at 16. Individuals are different in their maturity level. If you raise children to not mature till they are 21, they probably won't mature till they are 21. Women are physically ready to bear children at 16, and if that that isn't a big stinking message from nature, I don't know what is.

So which system is ideal? Ours? Well I guess the advantage of babying children till they leave for university is that they get a full education. Great. But what do we get instead? A generation of childish adults? Late parents?

I am really coming to the conclusion that there isnt much better or worse, there is only compromise. (But don't hold me to that :P !)

I find kids having kids so very disturbing. And I don't care what anyone says.
^Echo that.
16 is too young, period....no exceptions. At 16 years of age the brain is still developing.
Put it this way, if she was a mature girl (as some of you have suggested) she'd know about birth control and wouldn't be in this position. The same applies to her boyfriend.

Yep, for me Reading and Auckland are pretty much the same...finding girls who aren't mindless binge drinking bimbos who get knocked up ...incredibly difficult, yay for the online community to find people who don't suck.

^ I always thought that -I hate to use this term but -'common' people were a factor in every country because you have the less educated everywhere. However, everyone who comes to England tells me that it is more an English problem than anything else. I will say that England (and New Zealand?) isn't the most sophisticated of nations -but for all their inate chavvyness, the English are the most decent people I have come across! I would take that over the sophistication of, say, the French any day.

Still, feel free to disagree with me, but Keisha Castle-Hughes doesn't seem to be one of those girls.
