First Donald Trump, now Sandra Bullock. Sigh, I knew the Michelle Pfeiffer/Catherine Deneuve cover was too good to be true. US Vogue doesn't celebrate class.
Jessica Alba on the cvr of US Cosmo in a Burberry dress. She is an ideal Cosmo girl, but this cover didn't take full advantage of that. She looks like an average tanned blonde, eager to please. But the inside was not bad. A bunch of new cosmetics ads--Maybelline's launched a triple threat with Kristen Davis, Erin Wasson, and Josie Maran. I have to say that among all the mass-market brands such as Revlon, CoverGirl, Neutrogena, and Loreal, Maybelline has the best ads. Tasha Tilberg's CoverGirl ad is on the back cover. I love Tasha, but not here. In addition, Roberto Cavalli has been putting his lingerie ad in Cosmo for a while, so Kate Moss fans might want to check this out--it's a picture that has yet to be seen in other mags.
The stars of Closer (my 2nd fave movie this year next to Collateral) are on two covers: Clive Owen on Esquire (Eva Mendes has a photo spread), Natalie Portman on Premiere (curly hair).
I bought Feburary UK Vogue w/ Cindy Crawford on the cvr. The cvr was awful and I was hoping that I could skip this issue to save some $$$, but I could not resist the Lily Donaldson/Carter Smith ed. They made the usually quirky Donaldson conventionally beautiful, with crimson lips and Veronica Lake waves. UK Vogue seems to love make blondes look that way as of late: Angela Lindvall in Nov and Dec, Michelle Buswell in Jan, Lily Donaldson in Feb, and Julia Stegner in March. For those who are interested, Daria, Gemma Ward, Valentina share several group shots, and Michelle Buswell is in a makeup ed.
Rating March Magazines, first round:
Elle: B
Lucky: B-
Glamour: C
Cosmopolitan: B-
This issue of Elle is a pretty good choice for those who collect fashion ad campaigns (better than Vanity Fair). A lot of the ads are new (different from the ones I've seen Alberta Ferretti, Bottega Veneta, Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera (Anouck), Prada (Shannon Click), Oscar de la Renta (Diana Dondoe and an unidentified), and Stella McCartney (Angela Lindvall). The editorials are not strong at all, but Maja and Vivien Solari are there. Plus I dig the Eva Mendes spread.
