Finally made my way down to
First & Pike News and picked up these zines. Initial impressions upon perusing the issues without having yet read them:
W magazine Holiday 2017 | Flimsy and underwhelming but the cover/editorial is striking. Looking at the cover in person I'm stuck by the contrast of Daniel's fisted and decorated hand clenching the scarf and the other elongated and open in mid gesture. The fashion editorial content is instantly forgettable.
teenVOGUE Volume IV | Extremely flimsy and oddly formatted at 11 x 7 inches. Despite the heinous cover art, the HRC portraits by Joe Cruz inside better represent his simplistic yet eye-catching grafitti art transposed over well-known photographic images. (I discovered his work c. 2014 thanks to tumblr and now it graces this 2017 tV cover). The Linder Sterling piece is kinda epic or at least the concept. All of this too little too late. This issue feels so empty and reads more like a print version after thought: "let's take some of the digital content, run print versions and write it off as the Final Print Issue". Only bought this as a fond farewell, a faint memory of what this once forward-thinking magazine represented to me as a fashion-obsessed high schooler, college student.
OUT 100 Dec 2017/Jan 2018 | Striking cover of Chelsea Manning. Stoked to read the Michael Alago article. Tons of profiles of media personalities whom I actually care about and those who care about their impact on society.
VOGUE Living Australia May/June 2017 | The cover line reads "50 Fabulous Years: Celebrating half a century of style". Refreshing to not roll my eyes at yet another 'Anniversary Issue!' declaration. Dinosaur Designs textured, raised cover art is a truly tactile experience. Most excited to dig into this one. I've long admired this mags energizing mix of inviting, approachable, just right touch of austerity and catwalk fashion parallels.
Wanted to purchase more including French PHOTO and L'Officiel but only one or two not so pristine copies of countless international editions to pick from so I passed. Last months
British VOGUE hasn't even arrived. Really want to support this local newsstand but it's sadly lagging on international titles. Will try next weekend at
Bulldog News.
