What to wear to someone else's wedding

^ My guess is that if the invite says 'cocktail attire,' she's expecting a lot of black ...

Cocktail dress/outfit for females definitely centres around black or that first springs to mind, although for a wedding I don't think you'd be expected to wear black. I reckon all colours go, at a cocktail party not everyone wears black anyway.. usually reds, blues, yellows - anything I think. The cocktail dress shape you chose is perfect!

^ IMO if black were a big deal to the bride and she said 'cocktail attire' on the invite, she could also have said non-black for women. It's true that usually someone isn't wearing black at a cocktail party, but say 90% black is probably not unusual. To me the message of the invite is "Come dressed for the party, not so much the church!" And of course black sets off white pretty well, if that's what she's wearing ...

Normally I would not wear black to a wedding, but I would feel I'd been given permission if I was invited to wear cocktail attire--which I never have been ;)

Hey if everyone does turn up in black and the bride is in white how strange yet cool will that look in the church!

Not sure what I would wear if it said cocktail, probably navy.. but that may be a reflection on my current love for navy lol

wearing black to a wedding

i need help! i'm going to a october wedding that's taking place at 11:30 am in some sort of lodge in upstate new york.

i'm not a dress person so i only own ONE dress. spending a lot of money on a dress to wear once doesn't sit well with me, so i already scoured the usual suspects for disposable outfits (forever21, h&m, express, etc.) i couldn't find anything that i would want to wear.

ideally, i'd like to use what i already have in my closet. the problem is the dress i have is black, and i know some people consider that a faux-pas. i personally don't think it's a big deal?

ok, so here is me in the dress in question:

a different colorway but same dress so you can see better detail:

would it be a total no-no if i wore this black dress with a bright clutch and gray heels? if this doesn't work, then i think i'm gonna go with the fancy skirt-sweater-big jewels route.

^hmm, well i have only been to one wedding my entire life and i saw people wearing things like knee-high boots, skirts, jersey dresses from target, etc. at least this dress is made of natural materials and in my opinion can be 'dressed up' easily with the accessories.

i think i just made up my own mind...

^ I think it's fine ... I would go nice and bright with accessories. A bright necklace might be cute ... A morning wedding at a lodge sounds pretty laidback.

if its night weeding long black dress and if it is a day time wedding a dark preferably black short one...but not too short! high classic high heels and very simply complements.

Which one of these dresses should I wear?

Hi all

I've got a wedding next weekend and am just wondering which dress you think I should wear. I am going to church and reception. Thanks so much in advance!

I'd say the 1st outfit I like the belt around it and because I find the 2nd too simple, although I prefer the shoes in the 2nd than the ones in the 1st. Maybe the shoes from the 2nd could look nice with the 1st outfit ? not sure though.

Oh I didn't even read the text above the outfits. I agree with fashionista-ta then, definitely the 2nd. :flower:

another vote for the second option, black can be a little too sober for a wedding but the shape just works plus you look great in it..

I went to a wedding earlier this year and was completely clueless on what to wear until I walked into Max Azria (of all places :ninja:) and found this amazing pleated black 20s-inspired silk dress.. it reminded me of Lanvin F/W 03 dresses so I bought it right away, I was scared the darkness would be a little too much but as it was an afternoon winter wedding, it just worked. I only wish I'd have another occasion to wear it again.

Why don't I know anyone who's getting married in June? I found the perfect dress
