What to wear to someone else's wedding

I wasn't quite sure where to post this, so I may end up hitting a couple of threads on tfs. :ninja: I'm in a bit of crisis mode over my bridesmaid shoes!

Here's the dress on my maid of honor:

And I'm not sure what to do, shoes-wise... I want an AFFORDABLE shoe for my bridesmaids, since they'll all flying into Colorado for my wedding. I can't decide if I should go with a dark purple or a black... and I'm afraid that gold may be too matchy-matchy... and I can't decide if they should wear some fantastic pumps, or super-strappy sandals (which are surprisingly hard to find)... the color is the most difficult choice.

Should I have them find some strappy black shoes on their own?

Does anybody have opinions on the following shoes? My bridesmaids either don't care or just don't know what they want - IDEALLY I would love something similar to the first, but those cost waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much $$$ (but it's an example of what would really look great):

Now more realistic options:

(Below - In dark purple or black OR any color that would look nice, as they're dyeable in a bunch of colors):

Definitely purple! I love the idea of purple with that dress. Ideally a rich vibrant amethyst, not too sombre. A purple necklace would look great too. You look lovely. :)

Erin, I'm pretty sure we have a What to wear when you're a bridesmaid thread ... I like your first pick too.

Melisande, my thought is black patent sandals & jewelry that picks up the color in the dress. Enamel? Perhaps you could do some little charms on a fine chain at your collarbone ... does that length work for you? Would turquoise work with the blue in the dress? I've seen some really pretty turquoise jewelry ... Tell me what you think & I'll look for some options ...

PS Don't know if you already have presents for your attendants planned--I think my sister bought our shoes for us.

I have a wedding to attend next week and I'm conflicted on whether I want to stick with black or this beige/champagne colour. The only thing I'm afraid of is it might be too light or wedding-ish?
Opinions?

I really need some advice. My close friend is having a traditional-cum-extravagant wedding next month, and in the spirit of the occasion I bought a big, pink, feathery hat. So far, so good. I can build an outfit around a big, pink, feathery hat. However, my friend has just announced her intention to give corsages in her wedding colours - white and olive - to a few of us who've been helping her with all the wedding stuff (she's not having bridesmaids, so this is as close as it gets).

I don't know the best way to make pink and olive work together, especially given the extravagance of the hat. Any ideas? (Colour? Style? Shoes? Go and buy a different hat?) Anything would be much appreciated.

(This is the hat, if it helps)

I'm noticing some black dresses in this thread (I've also seen quite a few during the last weddings I attended).. I always thought the color was a no-no to wear to weddings because of the funeral-association? I know it isn't as bad, nor obvious, like the don't wear white or cream rule (last wedding I went to there was actually a guest wearing a floor length white dress  ).

So is it acceptable to wear black at a wedding?

yes, its acceptable to wear black to weddings.

i wore this christopher kane for topshop dress to a wedding last summer. credit topshop

My friend is getting married in July, I need 3 dresses and I can't seem to find the right ones.

For pre wedding dinner(black tie but no black, red & purple allowed). I bought this dress for another occasion and I thought it would be okay for the wedding but it has some hint of black/dark grey and I don't want to have my head chopped off.

or I could buy this one (since it's summer and all that jazz)

For the church/civil/coktail (no black, creme/white & red allowed) it's tricky, I am afraid of being underdressed or overdressed. Plus she said no skirt-shirt/pant-shirt combinaison allowed and no hats (I love my friend but she is going nuts with her wedding). In addition to that, I am unable to find THE printed/colourful dress which is not too short (ie I want it knee length) and not too wrong/right for my body shape.. Here are some selections..One of them don't follow the guidelines.

I own this dress and I wanted to wear it with "heavier" accessories but I don't know..a little bit too simple, no?

However I thought those would be more appropriate for the event :

I'm going to a Chinese wedding next week for my boyfriend's sister-and his mom strictly said "no black". I went shopping, but couldn't find anything I liked in my price range that didn't need a lot of alterations (I'm very pear shaped), so I'm wearing this top with a red pencil skirt:

It isn't the fanciest, but most people won't be getting incredibly dressed up.

I also loved this Alice + Olivia dress I saw at Holt Renfrew, unfortunately it was a bit short on me (I'm 5ft10 and the wedding will be more conservative). I haven't seen it online yet, but it would be just perfect for a summer wedding.

I'm actually very crushed that this dress didn't work! I loved it so much, but it only reached halfway to my knees (and I don't have the best legs).

Ammarra- I really like the dresses you picked out. They are all gorgeous how can I just say your friend seems to be a little extreme with planning her wedding. Its a bit silly to dictate what colors people can and cannot wear- especially with a color like black because its so universally flattering. However, I do think you picked some good choices. So for the dinner the night before I think its best to go with the colorful dress rather then the one you already own (because your friend sounds like she might freak if you do wear the greyish dress). For the wedding ceremony I really like the blue dress you already own. Yes it's a bit simple, but simple is good. Just dress it up with a nice shoe or statement jewelry piece. But if you feel like that dress is too simple then I really like second dress in green with the black detailing. Its so pretty! Okay, finally I'm a fan of the red dress for the evening reception. It's simply gorgeous, elegant and sure to make you look like a stunner. Hope that helps! :)

So now... my cousin will be getting married with in the next year (I know... I'm a long term planner when it comes to weddings and outfits) and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions. It's going to be a fancy black tie sort of wedding which means more then one day of parties to attend. Also, I was wondering, what do people think about hats? I'm American but the wedding is in England and I know that many of the women in attendance will wear a hat but I've never worn one before. Do you think it's necessary to wear one (especially for when in the synagogue)? And if so... where would be a good place to find a nice selection of them? Thanks! :)

any suggestion for something that is work safe (business-casual dress code) that would be nice for a wedding dinner at night? :( no time to go home and change ><

I don't think today it is considered necessary to wear a hat for the wedding day/cermony (most people won't for the other parties pre wedding) in England, but it is traditional to, especially if its a black tie wedding. Whilst you don't have to, most people probably will for the ceremony, and opportunities to wear hats aren't really that often so it might be fun to! Also, its not necessarily just hats, you could look for a fascinator maybe if you're not entirely comfortable in a hat? A good place to start looking is department stores, I know most here have a hat section, or maybe a milliner if you have one near you (although they tend to be a lot more expensive). I also found this article you might find helpful http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1194180/How--wear-hat.html :flower:

Thanks so much Chanelnumber5! This is really helpful and has given me some ideas as to what I should wear. The only time around here that I've ever been in a situation where fancy hats were common is at the horse races. But I was too young to properly wear one. I like the idea of a fascinator too- Kate Middleton seems to be making them a trend- plus they seem a bit more youthful. And the wedding will be a black tie affair so why not spring for one? :flower:

^ You're welcome. I have a fairly formal wedding to go to myself so I think I'm going to go the fascinator route too, like you said they're bit more youthful and good for people like me who have small faces so tend to get hidden by a hat!

I am in such a dilemma about what to wear to my best friend's wedding.

Here's the deal: I met him back when we were both in the black metal scene. He has a large frame, shaves his head and he used to always wear black leather coats, combat boots, black nail polish, etc. He has grown out of that look over the years and dresses very normal now. I'm not as much of a gothic chick anymore either but I still feel most comfortable in all black looks and I have a really hard time feeling like myself when wearing elegant and classy dresses. However, my best friend specifically requested me not to wear anything black to his wedding :( What should I do? I hate the thought of wearing something I feel awful in all day and even end up having tons of pictures of me looking all awkward.

Would it be ok to wear all black (maybe with touches of silver or red) if I tried to look elegant and not too edgy? Or is black a no-go for weddings these days anyway?
