Why do you like/hate John Galliano?

And I guess you will never stop taking that comment out of contrast all the time. I've heard this one one too many times to start explaining it again.

what was the context?

As I said, faust, I am not gonna explain it once again, 'cause I've been in a discussion around that quotation too often. Let's keep this thread going as it went, meaning answering the main question. Why do you like/hate John?

i like john galliano because even though his clothes are'nt really considdered(sp?) avant garde anymore he's still contraversial as this thread proves :P

ok, can you point me to another thread at least?

I love john for his sheer dedication to fashion and haute couture. Whether you like it or not Galliano's contribution and revitalization of Dior Couture has kept the entire industry alive and kicking past the retirement of Yves St. Laurent. If you ever heard the man speak about his process in designing and creating Haute Couture you will have nothing but sheer awe for him and for any other couterier as the whole process is quite extrordinary. He has helped make it relevant and push it forward in ways that not even Lagerfeld or Gaultier have been able to.

I hate him because he wastes his extreme talent and subtstantial position (creative director at dior) on gimmicks and foolishness. He blatantly serves celebrity culture (which Monsier Dior did as well) but in ways that lack taste and cheapen the legacy of the house. I also hate that his mainline is no longer the front for innovation and inspiration but has been left to naive exoticism, flashy colors, and sex appeal. It's a far cry from his graduation show at Central St.Martins that garnered him attention in the first place.

Sometimes I wish I could shake him and yell "Get your sh*t together John! You are a genius...Act like it!!". At the end of the day I truly love him for like others, he brought me into fashion and as much as I would not like to admit he still many times keeps me excited about it too.

I like him because, as many have already said, he has a lot of talent, not only in the way he constructs clothing but in the entire creative process. He manages to take things as disparate as the Peaking Opera and punk music, or Boldini portraits and Massai tribesmen, or any other fantastical, seemingly unrelated ideas and blends them into something that no one could have possibly imagined. In many ways I regard him as a creative genius.

I occassionally dislike him for taking things just one step too far into the realm of fantasy, or keeping things way too practical. Most times I think his collections blend raw creativity and actual wearability quite well, and those collections that aren't quite "wearable" in turn help shape where fashion goes next, but sometimes they just don't find the perfect balance.

I love him for almost everything...his creations are fun, happy, humerous and provacative. They may not be entirely original but they are fantasies that move people. They can be very emotional and powerful. He is a smart businessman too. Although some of the logo stuff are tacky but I don't think he designed it...

And another thing I hate....in all designer's really...is that he often uses the excuse,"I went to such and such and got inspired". How tired is that?! I used to think he took trips through his imagination(one reason I still appreciate Gaultier) but it seems his imagination plays no role anymore.
I think you're just nitpicking. All designers take trips and find inspiration somehow. I do think Gaultier is a genius, but whether he knows it or not has been inspired by something or someone somewhere. All designers take inspirationg, Galliano is one of those few who share that inspiration with us, I guess so we can see the method to his madness.

I love Galliano for his clothes, his drama...Pretty much everything about him. I hate the way he dresses though, repulsive.

Though I respect your opinion, I must point out that, though Gaultier has never said that he went to Africa or Russia or China to find his inspirations, he, more then any other couturier I think, almost always references Saint Laurent, who had that same kind of wanderlust as Galliano. Whether that's conscious on Galutier's part or not I don't know. Though I respect him immensely for his talent and creativity, and I love his work as well, in that way I think he is less creative then Galliano. Of course, that's not to say that Galliano doesn't explore some of the same themes as YSL, but he, unlike Gaultier, seems to go direct to the source...whatever destination that may be and thoroughly explores the culture.

exactly spike!, plus, he´s able to find or create resemblances between themes or cultures most people will never even thought of (the new look/ Peru´s national costumes, indian dance with flamenco and so on...)

i don´t hate galliano for his logo products because otherwise i will have to hate gucci, fendi, vuitton, versace, and so on, plus he has the decency not to show them on catwalks, as well as many other designers.

i don´t hate him because he wants women to look sexy and provocative because thats what almost every designer on the face of the earth wants, at least, he said it out loud, i even once listened kal rutenstein say that people that thinks differently about that is just stupid... not so sure if i respect that opinion, but i truly believe most fashion is about sex appeal, but yet again when i watch erin o´connor modeling a gray tulle and embroideries dress although i get turned on sexuallity is the last thing that goes into my mind.

i don´t hate him because of the way he dresses because he has always dressed differently, since day one!, i will rather dislike guys that wear fox stoles and berets to look just like him, but i think to dislike someone because of the way he or she dresses is way to shallow for me, plus if you have already made all your models perfect about its one an only dress and make up with pictures taken and everything i don´t think theres a reason to be on them a minute before on the backstage.

i love him for so many reasons, one of them is because as he once said "a bit of theatre goes along way...", and it has exactly being like that at dior, we can count with the fingers on one hand designers that have been able to do that for a house, and let us never forget that fashion is a business and while even gucci wasn´t selling, he was increasing on a forty percent dior sells with a chinese inspired couture collection, cabuki make up included.

I lo:heart:e Galliano for being such a fun and creative talented genius crazy person. I also  him for bringing me to fashion and for his dedication as a couturier. His collection may be awful but in a very dramatic way he made it. That's the point. I like him for almost everything. Except the animal abuse.

I guess you haven't heard the famous "i want to make clothes for women so men will want to f**k them" comment.

one can argue he makes clothes for men so men will want to f*&k them:wink:

he had talent at the start but sold out and personally i find his menswear trashy (but not in the good way), unwearable and overpriced (for the quality).

(although saying that i have a black frock coat from a cople seasons ago i still ocassionally wear)

I love him especially for his showmanship and eccentricity. I believe he's the perfect guy for Dior. After all, in his time Monsieur Dior was considered as scandalous as Galliano is today.

I:heart: Galliano cos he's the one who leads me to the world of fashion. His shows are truely inspirational. Whenever I lacked ideas, I went for his catwalk-dress photos. They're mere pleasure to the eyes. It's true tht his shows are usually full of gimmicks, but I think it's just a demand-supply situation. If ppl don't like his gimmicks, they'll finally end up in no-where. But as ppl like it, why not pls 'em a bit. Apart from the gimmicks(& these need high level of techniques!), his clothes are full of innovative cuts & constructions each time. (E.g. This spring's jacket, I  it!)

I think now, he deserves every praise, if u know wht he's been through in his difficult times, the time where nobody sees his talents.

yeh he does have some great techniques such as tailored tin foil jackets but this spring i thought was a major let down both at dior and galliano that jacket isnt entirly original

i like John Galliano's designs most of the time, the only complaint I have, is the real fur, its just so cruel, and unnecessary! He should know better!

I like Galliano because he is a genius (designer and marketing) and sales at Dior prove he must be doing something right. The only thing that bothers me is the subversive side of his designs. I don't understand how let's say, La Contesse de Berry, a couture customer for 30 years can clap after seeing a show abundant with inspiration from drag queens, trailer trash, the homeless, bondage and S&M.

Whatever, you guys. I just think it's a bit lazy of an explaination to sit there and describe the exact costume of certain cultures and never really say anything derivitive of one's own imagination. It's not nitpicking because inspiration is one of the key objectives of the designer's collections....and when I hear that and see what they do and sometimes very literally....of course I will criticize. As will anybody.
