Why do you like/hate John Galliano?

I used to like him for the fantasy and the mixng of diffrent things, but now Ithink he just pretensious , over done and 'tired'. I still like some fo the older colection a bit.

I like Galliano because he is a genius (designer and marketing) and sales at Dior prove he must be doing something right. The only thing that bothers me is the subversive side of his designs. I don't understand how let's say, La Contesse de Berry, a couture customer for 30 years can clap after seeing a show abundant with inspiration from drag queens, trailer trash, the homeless, bondage and S&M.
I think that's a large part of why he has become so successful and popular, he puts whatever it is that's on his mind out there for the people to see. He does things on a couture runway that no one would dare, and that's really the way he's been since day one.

I don't know if everyone feels like that, but for me that's a large part of why I love him.

i absolutely love and adore him! he's a genius, there is no one like him. his creativity knows no borders, and he never ceases to surprise me. his designs are just magic, it's like a fantasy world come true. i've admired his clothes from day one, and still continue to do so......and his latest couture show: too much for words!

John Galliano is truly one of the best designers of our time. I love his GALLIANO HOMME LINE and I love the GALLIANO GAZETTE. His inspirations-Dior the man himself, the french revolution (marie antionette, King Louis XVI, etc.), his trips to exotic locales-Yemen, Mayan Culture etc... are truly reflective in his work...You never know what to expect out of a Galliano show whether it is for his own line or for Dior.

My criticism---The "Homeless" inspired collection for Dior awhile back and the "mini" homeless references for his own line....I understand the need to reflect homeless culture as he saw homeless people on the street and got inspired (you all know the story...) BUT TO HAVE THOSE INSPIRED CLOTHING REFLECT MEGA EXPENSIVE PRICES IS KINDA RIDICULOUS>>>

I love Galliano as he is my favorite designer, but A galliano gazette simple v'neck shirt going for $$350.00 (which i crazily bought by the way) is too overpriced!!!! but i bought it so what does that say about me???? but John Galliano is truly one of a kind and came out of the gate from Saint Martins School with a stellar collection which continues through his work today!!!!!!

I dislike him as well because I feel his talent is alost in capitalism. He has disillusioned what people consider as creative over the last years. Not to mention his arrogance and over-inflated ego has got the best of him these days. He no longer cares about his work...more so he cares about his status and who wears them.

It's a far cry from his graduation show at Central St.Martins that garnered him attention in the first place.

i liked galliano for about a year or two and thats when he just graduated from csm (late 80's)
to me he's a brilliant example of getting 'there' through ''important'' connections and extensive socialising, he was always like that..
to me this is PR, its not artistic creativity.. :innocent:

*esthetically i find him poor and unimaginative, occasionaly tacky.. he might bring in one brilliant piece by season which is trully pathetic..
i simply can't take his own image for himself, in my eyes he's ridiculous.. hoe he dresses like that..and all the face jobs, make me sad :ninja:

*also agree with faust, luxmode, ania
agreed with helena's post on the 'missogynist' issue which i wont elaborate on.. see the caricature hair/make up combo they speak for themselves :P

that said i honestly dont understand what people find in his work, hyped out and dry?
well, just stating my opinion, hopefully the Galliano fanclub wont take this stupid little post on mine too seriously :P

i may not like Galliano but i respect your right to adore him :flower:

to me he is fashion epitomized, and therefore i am actually pretty neutral. i doubt he ever claimed not to be wolf dressed up in sheep's clothing, prying on the pocketbooks and the thirst of the fantastical spinning in people's minds -- you can look toward others who will dangerously sidle up next to us earnestly peddling their wares.
i see his clothing as manifestations of current culture in all it's eclectic and perverse colors we both love and loathe: the exoticism of far away lands, the adoption of 'street culture', and the thirst for decadance, but done with enough sense to confess the absurdity.
galliano never struck me as someone who wanted to make wearable clothing, and the man himself seems to live in the realm of his own creations. you could hate him, but he/his work is a well we look into which reflects back our own distorted but true imagery ( kinda like a macabre folk teller) and fashion is the means. his volumous skirts with their impossible proportions remind us of something mighty and puffed up, but dangerously decadent and at the pinnacle or it's breaking point.

truth is stranger than fiction.

i guess he is inadvertently ( or maybe we're all puppets and that maniacal gleam is actually puncturing us) creating a cultural dialogue which people may inadvertently find a surprising amount of discourse in.

I hate him when he becomes so self indulgent , that the beautiful pieces in his menswear , for instance , get lost in the totally over the top presentation .

may we all hate ourselves then? he at least is making a lot of money and receiving a lot of acclaim. what do WE get out of the deal? the scraps under the table?

He is one of the designers people will read about in 100 years time , like Yves Saint Laurent . Whether that reading will be with absolute approval on the part of the fashion cognoscenti , rests with John Galliano himself !!!

it won't be alexander mcqueen who will be crowned as the enfant terrible of our times -- precisely because we are all too aware -- but it will be galliano who receives it.

it is. you could also say it's a pretty effective cultural experiment. raise your hands if you were duped.

surely westwood deserves that Galliano allways seems to be inspired by her in some way or other

i tend to like his dresses as well as his shows.. for the grandiose element mainly :P . aside from that, i think it's all extremely trashy.

^ It's true Mullet, though the man has created some of the most awe inspiring, imaginative, technically brilliant pieces I have ever seen, give him a piece of satin and he can work wonders....his dresses are like liquid.

as well as proenza schouler on same plane as anna wintour- mc queen and isabella blow- stella mc cartney/famous father- ford and richard buckley- tisci/maria carla boscono, etc, ect, ect...

If he weren't talented, he would not have made it. So I don't believe it's all PR. Sometimes a talent just floats into the world and sometimes certain people give it a push. I don't see the signifigance of that.

oh yes, and then a dream comes true out of thin air.. how NOT true

wake up mrDale, takes connections to get connected

actually, while i was studying at st. martins, i heard from professors that john gallino had an amazing work ethic, and of course had endless creativity, and in general was an all around stellar student who seemed to have all the makings of someone great. remember this was before the time of galliano, stella and mcqueen before it blew up to it's massive rep. as the place to network.

I never denied that there weren't any connections involved. I hoped you would've understood that I was quite aware of that and with that, that I was not born yesterday. I was only pointing out that it's not ALL PR. If it were all PR, I would not have liked him either, I just happened to stumble upon a picture of a dress he did and I fell in love immediatly. No PR involved. And I was also saying that I don't see the signifigance in how a designer gets there as to wether I like him or not.

I've seen plenty of talentless people make it. Talent isn't everything in this business.

I agree, they exist. I just utterly don't see John as one of those people, 'cause I recognise his talent, that's what I am trying to say in a but if clumsy way perhaps :P

IMO John really isn't one of those people who just made it cause of connections. I mean, he was broke, living in his studio for years after he graduated, but still became well known within the industry. He really did work to get where he is today, regardless of connections. It's not as if he just appeared on the scene with mega support....I hardly think it's fair to compare him to the likes of Proenza Schouler & co.
