^I'll try and post one in the next few days(I'm hopeless with computers, it might take me that long to figure it out :P)

I love those vintage mink scarves! I have a very small one that's super disturbing because it still has the head on it :P I love to wear it with a really pretty/girly dress. I want to get a bunch more, especially after seeing this photo on model mayhem of this model who was wearing like 6 or 7 all clipped onto each other. I just spent like 45 min trying to find it again but can't :( I wish I could it was amazing, words can't describe it.

i think fur scarves go well with your look C~D
at least the pics of what i've seen.. your suits and long hair

Wearing of fur in the UK... I still cant believe the looks I get!

Hi all

my name is Gail... I'm new to the forums and the UK really. I moved here after my hasband got a new job in Scotland... we are from Sweeden originally.

I just wanted to raise the issue of fur in the UK... I find it amazing the number of disaproving looks I get if I wear any of my fur items out in town... It's not so bad if im out in the country but in town people still look at you as if you've done soemthing wrong... I notice it I guess as back home in Sweeden no one bats an eyelid! I dont even have any huge coats just one bunny fur short jacket, a sable jacket and a few fox and bunny accessories.

Why are people so anti fur in the UK... I just dont get it as its freezing cold... fur looks and feels amazing... and well its just the ultimate in warmth... The reason mainly I dont understand it though as the same people can be spotted walking out burger king with a leather handbag!

Do other uk fur wearers get the same looks im talking about???

Welcome to tFS and the UK ^_^
There a a few girls at college and around town who wear Fur Coats. I personally think it looks great.
You should keep on wearing it, to make a point.

Hey vogue28.... thanks for the welcome... it's my intention to keep wearing it... I think its those who give me the looks who have the problem.... they just have to deal with it... and the bitchy side of me wanders if they are just jealous anyway...

Do you have any fur?

^ I agree that it's best not to judge others & simply take responsibility for your own life and choices. But I can understand why some people are disturbed by fur. Now that I know how it's 'made,' I am disturbed by the sight of astrakhan. There also seems to be a widespread perception that fur projects 'let them eat cake' in the current economy, where many are struggling to afford the basic necessities.

While it's true that animals have to give their lives for both fur and leather, it's quite a bit easier to adequately replace fur than it is leather.

The way of 'let them eat cake' is now my new favourite term, thank you!

I haven't had my furs too long but when I wore them (which was basically everyday this past winter) I got looks. It might be because they're anti-fur, but it's much more likely to be because I'm a man wearing something a woman would wear!
Nobody in this area is passionate about much so I'm not likely to be red painted/tofued any time soon.

Whenever I wore my furs (in the UK) I didn't get any looks, but I wasn't looking to get any, my furs were cheap second-hand coneys in a black colour and I wore them on cold days when I was walking outside a lot. They were less a statement and more a necessity during my student days.

The only people who spoke to me about them where strangers (women) who came up to me to ask if I'd had any trouble while wearing them, and said they weren't brave enough to wear the vintage items they had.

I think if you have an ostentatious-looking fur, you'd attract the same stares that people give to anyone wearing anything that people consider flashy. It's less to do with the fabric and more to do with the assumptions people make about 'showing off'. And geography would govern those reactions - what looks flash in one place might look ordinary somewhere else.

I tell you what there are literally hundreds of decent furs on ebay at the moment for those that like vintage pieces. I guess as the summer approaches people sell rather than buy. I am even thinking about buying some and re-selling them when it gets colder!

The other night we had a girlie night in with a few friends, one of whom had never tried a fur on. She tried on one of mine (mink) and it was funny watching her instantaneously announcing that she is getting one as soon as the weather drops! I have also noticed a huge rise in the number of furs around in the A/W just gone. Even outside of London (where they are everywhere) there were lots in Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, etc.

^ Ebay is totally the best for fur.
And since 99p starting price is now free to list, people are putting things on at ridiculously cheap prices. If you want a black or brown coney jacket for everyday winter wear then now's the time for a major bargain.

Well on the British one it is 99p starting price = free to list, so I assume it's everywhere else to?
The fur prices vary quite dramatically but I know even the cheaper ones sometimes struggle to go . .
That's where I come in
Now's the time to buy though - beginning of summer when the last thing people want to be thinking of is buying up furs for the winter.

There are some shocking pieces up for auction right now in Britain (I don't know if they ship [or if it's even legal to ship]) including an Ocelot coat someone's been handed down which is starting at £1,500 . .

oh i just wasn't sure what pence is.

i'm interested in cutting them up and making my own little thing out of it
i just learned last week

^ Maybe Saga would like to sponsor you ^_^ I'm sure they have some bits and pieces lying around ...

Three damaged coney coats with sleeves cut off (sleeves included!) or linings missing for cuttery.
Have my eye on them on the bay . .

For anyone wanting to experiment with materials, probably the cheapest way to get your hands on hides and skins etc would be to contact a fellmonger.

In addition to being new - rather than some ratty piece that's on sale as damaged goods - the chances are, the materials you'll get from him will also be the by-product of all of the animal being put to good use.

It depends on what volume of skins you need for your work, and how important it is to trace the 'journey' of the fabric - like the way green cotton is all the rage, with people wanting to know the conditions it was grown in, and who sewed it together, before they buy the shirt.
