C_D - I had also noticed the amount of cheap deals on ebay with the 99 "pence" offer  There are loads of pelts for sale also for the more creative amongst us!

Not that this is a garment but I have my eye on it and look at the price (99 pence =
under $2!!!)

C_D - I am not sure the damaged jackets you have found will be that easy to make good though? Damaged pelts usually mean well worn in which case they won't make a great garment. Still, you seem to know what you are doing ......

I  ebay for fur!!!

Def going to have a look and get loads more bargains for next winter... I def need some mink in my life...

It's funny that girl saying about her friend trying on fur... maybe its just for some women because most of the friends i've made in Scotland since i've been here would be awful to me if they knew half of the fur I have and certainly most assume its fake... I adore the fct its not and they dont even have a clue...

Just love the feel of sinking into my furs... or when its cold flicking the collars up and sinking into them...

ebay looks amazing for bunny fur especially... some nice jackets... and such a steal price!!!

BTW... I was at a wedding a few months back and this girl hd this green clutch bag... it was def designer... and it ws like crock patent leather... but it had this green died rabbit fur round it too... but it was kinda skraggy... like just off the bunny and onto the bag... I adored the rawness of the look... soo luxurious...anyone any ideas about the bag and who makes them... I sooo want one! I wish i'd asked her on the dy but didn't know her.

is there a reason they get damaged?
or is it more a natural thing.. like decomposing..
i only read heat makes them rot faster

tigerrouge i'll see if i can find a fellmonger
i guess what you mean is someone who works with the fur/leather himself, does the stripping, tanning etc. as opposed to someone who just sells it

You know, a lot of people who aren't crazy about fur feel that 'vintage' fur is in a bit different category ... if you want to be truly politically incorrect, the bargains on eBay are off limits ... you'll have to spring for brand new

To be honest im not very much bothered about being politically correct!!! I think the world has gone PC mad! Especially with petty issues and the big issues are ignored! So for me all fur is fair game and if I can get it for a steal... then that's all the better for me!!!

if it's vintage, it can also be called used no?
therefore you are recycling
reusing
saving the planet also XD

if that's what you meant

Yes - it's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it! And it's usually cheaper to deal direct with the 'source' of a product.

A tannery business could be willing to produce hides in ways that match your individual requirements - a stiffer/softer finish, or without the use of certain chemical/physical treatments.

You lose nothing by contacting them, and it is always good to find out more about the background of the materials that you use.

Skinning/tanning is an old-fashioned job that is being replaced by machines and industry, so finding someone who does it 'by hand' would be a window into the past, showing you the story of this traditional skill.

In the UK, some Hunt Kennels sell animal hides, as part of the process of disposing of animal carcasses. They collect the animal, use the meat for the dogs, and either tan the skins for sale from themselves, or sell the untreated skins on to a tannery.

The garment I shall be creating from this old scrap fur I am buying for ebay is based on a sinister subject so if it looks a bit worn and battered it's going to add to the atmosphere of the piece - there's going to be lots of old pelts sewn together (meticulously) in a large macabre patchwork coat that sort of shreds away to reveal a dress beneath :innocent:

Two tippet scarves arrived today. One is this fur that I've recieved before and it is immensely soft. It feels almost like uber-soft suede it's gorgeous.
If I post a picture do any of you guys think you'd be able to I.D. it?

The desciption reminded me of these Fendi handbags croc w. fur trim from A/W 08

William_St_Girl - my friend has a bag with a rabbit pelt on but it is non desinger. She paid £15 for it at a car boot stall - there was a lady selling them. I know what you mean about the rawness of that type of look. I actually saw the most fabulous jacket on ebay earlier and I would have got it but it is too large for me. You might like it I guess?

As for the environment - I have just finished reading this but we are propably going off topic. http://www.furisgreen.com/ecological.aspx

Hi

Im not sure I like that coat to be honest... just a bit too random and unorganised for me... a bit hippy and that's not really me... Im more of a glamerous look tbh!

Ebay is def a great place to look for good fur deals though... in my opinion.

You found any other good ebay furs recently... what furs you got?

I've always thought I'd love a pelt with the head and legs sometimes... but other times I think no... I think its more because its seen as so unacceptable now im put off and also most of the pelts like that are old looking and not well made... although seen some Alexander McQueen examples a while ago which did look lush.

Fur should be left for coats, fur trimming in my opinion is tacky and old fashioned in the bad sense!

^Glad to see i'm not the only UK fur lover ... even if you dont like fur trim... which I think can be ok if it's real on a nice and I mean nice coat... I know fake fur or tacky trim can look bad...

So you any fur yourself??? Fur accessories are lush???

What do people think of fur with the tails and heads on... Ie stoles... If nice ones... I dont mean the awful flee riden old ones?

WSG

^ I'm in the u.k.!

I have most kinds of fur scarves now.. they're piling up in my little fur vault.
I also have a selection of fur hats and an old pair of fur gloves.. about five coats.. three mink stoles and several mink and leather brooches.
All vintage, of course, not fresh off the field.
All are in hybernation for the summer now I'm afraid

is there any odd texture of fur you guys like or have discovered...É

most of them seem to look similar, just change in weight
and some look coarser, less fine

but the one i have seen that looks quite different is the astrakhan

Aesthetically, they look awful, because you cross the line from a beautiful textile into wearing a piece of taxidermy. Also, people associate them with old ladies, so it would drag down a young woman's beauty into the grave. In that respect, there are no nice stoles, they are terribly ageing.

Also, anyone serious about their furs should look into proper cold storage during the summer months. Just because a fur is 'dead matter' doesn't mean that it doesn't need ongoing maintenance to keep the coat looking fine. If you buy into the beauty of fur, you buy into the serious care of it.

^ Apart from astrakhan, I haven't experienced any noteably unusual textures.
They're all pretty much as soft as each other from mink to ocelot. Yet, I still so crave to experience chinchilla.

Though this fur that I have mentioned before I find so intriguing.
Can anyone identify what this could possibly be? It has the softest texture for fur I have ever felt.
I had some scraps of it before but now I have it in a scarf. It feels phenomenal.

There's a world of texture, but fur these days is simply a luxury garment, we've lost the tradition of practical garments that people would make from tougher hides.

I have found that the skins of some exotic animals are nowhere near as soft as one might imagine, and indeed more suited for floor rugs than fur coats, though their 'mythic status' means people will clamour to wear them, no matter that it may mean the end of them walking upon the earth, in order to create a rather unwearable item that simply has a pretty pattern on it.
