Efron Fronts Screaming Girls In Sydney
Hollywood heartthrob Zac Efron, and his beard, sent thousands of female fans into hysteria at the Australian premiere of “Charlie St. Cloud.” Sporting a face full of serious stubble, the 22-year-old chatted to reporters on the red carpet at Sydney’s Parramatta Westfield while a pack of screaming girls let out their most deafening tones.
Despite his major celebrity status Efron insists he still gets nervous before fronting his fans.
“Every time I think I’m used to it, I get in the car, everything’s fine, but right before I roll out the car the butterflies start to arrive and it’s just nuts,” he said at yesterday’s premiere. “You never get used to it.”
“Charlie St. Cloud” is Efron’s first endeavour at serious acting and a far cry from his “High School Musical” days.
The actor, who has been dating HMS co-star Vanessa Hudgens for five years, says he is cutting his beard loose very soon.
“I would never keep this forever, it’s too itchy,” he laughed. “The girlfriend isn’t a fan.”
The facial hair didn’t seem to bother the hoards of fans screeching for his attention at yesterday’s premiere. Some girls were waiting at the venue from 6.30am and two lucky best friends from Wakehurst Public School managed to meet the hunk.
“We were the only ones who got photos with him, I’ve cried about three times, I’ve loved him for six years,” said 11-year-old Holly Jessop and best mate Maddi Johnston.
It was not just primary school girls who made an effort for the premiere. Several of the NRL’s Parramatta Eels turned out for the event and admitted they were big fans.
“Looking forward to meeting him actually, he’s almost as big a teen heart throb as my friend Dan Mortimer over here,” laughed Parramatta Eel Tim Mannah. I like ’17 Again’ and ‘High School Musical,’ I make my little brother and sister watch it!”
“Charlie St. Cloud” sees Efron play a young man who has a choice between keeping a promise he made to his brother, who died in a car accident, or going after the girl he loves.
Reviews for “Charlie St. Cloud” have been largely weak. Critics panned the film, calling it a washed up version of the “Sixth Sense,” but in all honesty who really cares when you have a face like Zac Efron.
