82nd Academy Awards

my faves:

zoe kravitz
maggie gyllenhaal
diane kruger
sjp
jennifer lopez

cameron actually looks the worst i've ever seen her imo...
what i used to love about her style is the quirkiness and uniqueness she would bring...
like wearing hot pink with turquoise accessories...
she looks like every other hollywood actress tonight, and frankly much older than she really is...:ninja:

more of these women need to take risks...where is tilda swinton when you need her??
I agree about Cameron Diaz.I usually look forward to her look and expect something with a splash of fun-this time she is totally bland and washed out!

^^ i wanted tarentino to win screenplay as well harumi and was not rooting for sandra

I COMPLETELY AGREE. Avatar being considered "Best Film of the year" is a joke. The film is all visual effects. NOTHING ELSE. It won that. Plus it also got Cinematography (not deserving) and Art Direction (I can live with that) for good measure. Plenty enough.

The Hurt Locker was such an incredible win. When you look at its budget and the little money it made at the box office going up against the juggernaut that was Avatar, how can you NOT be happy for its win? Also, I don't know how you can think it wasn't a good movie. I'd really like to hear your reasoning on that. (I'm just talking to anyone who didn't like The Hurt Locker)

i agree that the hurt locker was a great movie. for a little engine that it was, it was an incredible win. david beats goliath, right?

i have to disagree with your statement regarding avatar as being all (and only) visual effects. in terms of the cinematic experience, avatar delivers in every way. no, it's not a small, arthouse film. it's a hollywood, blockbuster movie with a lot more. there is a reason why it's the highest grossing film of all time.

perhaps this is the wrong forum for me to be discussing this. :P:flower:

why is it utterly laughable? why was it so bad?

:innocent:

Best picture Oscar isn't presented for great visual effects and "cinematic experience". It should focus on the quality of the storyline, the subtle undertones that the film tries to convey.

That was a very sedated red carpet: no big disasters and no real stand-outs aside from Zoe and Diane.

On the awards front, Kathryn absolutely deserved best director (and I couldn't care less that she's a woman) but Hurt Locker winning for best movie and best screenplay is a total joke.
The plot is tenuous at best and the movie will have no long term impact. It's just a very well directed but ultimately shallow thriller.
Tarentino should have won screenplay and IB was the best movie among the nominees. Avatar was also more deserving than Hurt Locker.

Otherwise, aside from the Bullock travesty I am pleased with the results, especially the technical ones.

you've got to be joking me!!

from a scientific point of view, there was a profound and subtle quality to the storyline.

^seriously. When will the Academy stop scr***** him over?

Avatar was conceived before Pocahontas, who isn't an original story either anyway.
This type of story has existed forever in movies.

Which is what exactly in Hurt Locker?
There is no story to speak of and the message is no deeper than 'war is a drug'. No sh*t Sherlock, it's brand new information.

Any episode of Generation kill has more dept and brains than that movie.

I was really hoping Quentin would win for Best Screenplay. I'm glad Waltz won though because he was amazing.
And how effing long was Jeff Bridge's speech? I was like ugh hurry plz kthxbai!

It is the hishest grossing film because of inflation. If you adjust for inflation, it's only the 14th highest grossing film of all time, with Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, and The Sound of Music being the top 3.

thanks for the correction! my husband literally told me the same information just 5 minutes ago. :flower:

Yes District 9 was an excellent movie.

District 9 is SO unappreciated. It makes me so sad lol

I thought it was an excellent movie. Very well written, great effects, superb acting, and wonderful message.

Really, if Hurt Locker swept a lot of the categories it was nominated for, I don't see how District 9 wasn't nominated for just as much awards.

Still better than Avatar.
Well, you were taking about plot and layers and I was pointing out that Hurt Locker doesn't have either, that's all.:innocent:

Anyway, let Hurt Locker have its moment: this movie will be forgotten by next year. IB and Avatar will both outlive it.

These 'corrected for inflation' lists aren't that revealing really, because they don't put things into context. For example, Gone with the Wind was in theatres for 25 years, not something that could be replicated today. Star Wars and older movies didn't have to compete with TV and piracy, etc.

But yeah, you are totally correct.

It sucks but sci-fi is a notoriously underrated genre when it comes to Oscars. Only three others have ever been nominated for Best Picture (Star Wars, A Clockwork Orange and I think Alien), none have won. Actors in sci-fi are very rarely nominated too. IMHO Sharlto Copley was robbed of a nomination for Best Actor, if not a win.

I just noticed this thread was in Star Style and not Entertainment... I was confused because everyone was talking about what was going on in the awards and not the fashion lol

Great pics MyNameIs! Mine in no order:
