Abercrombie & Fitch bans the color black from its brand.
The retailer confirmed to Business Insider that it doesn't sell black clothing. Management also discourages corporate employees at its Columbus, Ohio headquarters from wearing the popular color at work.

Employees told us that it's common knowledge that notoriously meticulous Abercrombie CEO Michael Jeffries is behind the exile of black clothing.

"Management will tell people that Mike hates the color, and so we're not supposed to wear it to work," the employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said. "It even applies to coats in the winter."

The company provided us with this statement about why it doesn't care for the color:

"Abercrombie & Fitch does not sell black clothing and discourages wearing it at our home office and in our stores, because we are a casual lifestyle brand and feel black clothing is formal. We have nothing against black clothing and feel it is perfectly appropriate for things like tuxedos."

Among its competitors, the ban on black is unique to Abercrombie: American Eagle sells a plethora of black options.

It's another example of the power the image-conscious Jeffries wields over the brand.

Jeffries is said to be the reason Abercrombie doesn't sell women's XL or XXL clothing. Its largest women's pants are a size 10, while H&M's standard line goes up to a size 16, and American Eagle offers up to 18.

He explained his obsession with traditional beauty in a 2006 interview with Salon.

“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” he told the site. “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely."

A Bloomberg story last year detailed the crazy rules Jeffries had for models working on the company's private jet.

The flight crew had to wear Abercrombie jeans, polo shirts, flip-flops, sweatshirts and a winter coat. Jewelry besides wedding rings and watches was banned.

I thought it wasn't humanly possible for Abercrombie and this Jeffries guy to get more ridculous, but it seems I was wrong. He's insane and needs to get over himself.

I think the stockholders need to overthrow this guy once and for all.

I've worked for Abercrombie is college, they have always banned the colour black, and that has been a few years now. Why is this now making news?

is he really that dumb or is he just that deluded by his own sense of power that he honestly believes that is what will save that irrelevant company? i didn't think that human contradiction could get any worse myself but egads he just continues digging a deeper douchebag pit for himself.

i think they should ban a&f altogether or if not completely gut the brand from the inside out(and its pricing,as a matter of fact)including its current leadership. many companies with any grain of scruple would see how these antics would be nothing more than an egregious reflection on their company. and it does nothing but push potential shareholders as well as profits itself away. clearly he has absolutely no clue how to run a real business.....he thinks it's a club not a store.

i mean black....really? it's a flippin' colour for crissakes....it's classic and timeless....it's not some superficial,fickle trend.

Oh well, they can go f**k themselves entirely, for all I care.

another reason to keep ignoring abercrombie & fitch....

i dont think it occured to anyone until recently that they werent producing black items.

i think the focus was more on the advertisements and the odd CEO.

Who wears A+F? Thats the matter!

I guess this Jeffries has failed to notice that the cool kids from high school are no longer relevant  So sadly his target audience is destined for obscurity ... those people don't run the world, nor are they its tastemakers. I try not to even walk past the place due to the obnoxious blaring music. Am I remembering correctly that an obnoxious scent also wafts from the store? ^_^ Eau de Mike, I'm guessing ...

No brands makes me cringe like A&F
I cannot take anybody wearing this brand seriously

Okay, this is completely ridicolous. A&F people seriously need to get over themselves.

I can't comprehend this man, what an imbecile.

Those who wear A&F are the lowest common denominator. Maybe this CEO is realizing nobody is wearing his clothes anymore so he has to do outrageous things for people to pay attention to him and his brand. Pathetic.

Agree, take your money and run dude. It's over. You had a good 10+ year of littering high schools across the nation with douchebaggery & skank. It's the good ole "any publicity is good publicity" bit that's fooling nobody.

Sidenote: thank you for the [strike]softcore p*rn[/strike] catalogues featuring strikingly beautiful young men over those 10+ years.

^^^ Absolutely agree.

But wasn't A&F always a joke as a brand? It was a marketing ploy directed at teens who weren't around for the Bruce Weber for Polo imagery and clothing. I can't feel anything for that/ them since there was never anything there; it was never fashion, just very soft gayporn being peddled there.

I'd like to think all those "cool jocks" that identified with the brand would be future gays when they're out of high school... So these silly stories are amusing at best, and worst: I hope they continue to impose their brand of silliness for our amusement (next rule will be something so OTT like all guys working there must pass a "deep voice" test). I still see clueless people-- kids and adults, carrying around their bags with the huge image of some guy's buffed torso all the time like it's some status purchase. Those bags are so blatantly meant to be homoerotic, but these clueless customers just think it's very "A&F"-- and A&F is so 10 years ago.

 i think i was in middle school when i wanted to wear get jeans from there and my mom told me i'd look like trash. I never went back, and i definitely dont regret my decision
