Advice about Starting & Promoting a Fashion Blog - See Post #1 for Thread Rules

I simply went to wordpress.com and signed up for a blog. I find their formatting incredibly easy and intuitive to use, which is a plus.

I don't know if I have a set objective yet, even though I've been blogging for six months. I definitely have my own perspective, but the types of posts vary wildly. For example, within the past week, I've taken my own style photos, written an essay, posted some personal stuff, written a review of a handbag, etc...)

I don't have a ton of readers yet, but my biggest tip would be to use social media! I publicize my blog via Twitter and Facebook, and it definitely helps.

xoxo Hannah

last question ( i swear): how can i center my blogs content, so it would be right in the middle of the page; rather than to the side?

Just wondering how people deal with negative commenters. anonymous abuse etc?
Do you censor your comments?
Would be interested to know.

Hmm i don't know if i will go quite that far, pretty funny though.. theres this girl that just keeps coming back and abusing me for everything - this time telling me to become less pretentious and fake to increase my readership, and even directed me to another blog from my town because they are doing so well they are getting free stuff! (wow... cool...)
And keeps harping on about me being in love with myself etc and not having thick enough skin for the industry. Very weird..
I googled the username and she just does the same thing on forums and other blogs!

I've never had any abusive comment but I do get a lot of random spam, etc. I think you should be able to change your settings so that each comment needs your approval (i've done this). It won't stop the person making the comment in the first place, but it won't be published on your blog.

Yeah i already have it on needing approval, but its whether or not i publish it that is the question.
Oh well, ill just publish them.
They can say what they want.

wekilledcouture, i had a look at the comments, 1 negative comment towards like 30 positive comments sounds pretty nice to me! + This girl does obivously not what she's talking about - since when has skin to be thick in oder to go places as a model? weird girl, indeed.

I decided to turn that comment function off due to all the spam, things like

" nice, i like your blog.

C H E C K - O U T - MY - BLOG WWW. XXXX. B L O G S P O T. C O M

",
are just annoying.

I just find it funny that i come off as pretentious!
could it be because i dont just take my photos in my driveway or something like that?
but yes! very weird girl haha

yes! those comments are so fake... its really funny to look at some of the more well known blogs and see how many of there numerous comments are just spam.

How the hell do you get pretentious from your pictures? You're pretty (gorgeous actually) and you wear and model clothes really well. Ughhhhh trolls.

God I hate, like hate that like no other. I never check out other peoples blog when they do that as a rule. I can see if there is a reason for it like I posted something similar or I bought this you might want to check it out on my blog blah blah but it's so obvious that they just want to ride your coat tails.

You might want to look into Disqus and Intense Debate if you want to keep comments and ban certain people from commenting. You can ban a specific IP address or website, email etc. Both have a spam filter. I use Intense debate it was easier and I like all the add ons. Like re tweet, RSS feed, share button (that blogger just got around to having) embed video, add a poll etc. It also has reply/delete/moderate by email so you don't have to keep going to your blog. You can ban certain words like sl*t (cause apparently I am one cause I like shoes with heels) anyway I don't know if any of you are interested in it but feel free to ask anything about it. I have accounts with both Disqus and Intense Debate so if there is something you want to know that you can't find out on their websites then just PM or ask here. :)

You are absolutely not pretentious!! And for the record, I like that you take editorial-style shots rather than standing against a horrid background in your driveway. Don't change a thing!! And also don't feel you need to approve every comment (I certainly don't) - it's your blog!

Thank you so much Mcclaire for your help and links! (would install intensedebate but i use blogger classic with a highly modified layout)
and thank you boots, I would never change what I do, and i figured that I would approve it.
Haters gonna hate ;D
And I guess she wasn't expecting that and came back and removed the comment herself!

Luxirare just told me to take the negative comments as compliments of jealous people! and i think it's wise advice.

I've only had one mean (troll-like) comment on my blog (which has surprised even me...I mean, the fact that there's only been one). It was someone sitting there telling me that they hated the shape of my mouth. I don't even post pictures of myself really, there's mainly just one with my profile for reference. They made some other comments that missed the mark, and then, as a closing statement, told me to "get a life", which kind of cracked me up. I'm like, "You're the one anonymously (um, can you say coward?) making superfluous, shallow comments on the shape of a stranger's mouths, nonetheless, maybe you ought to take your own advice? How much of a life is there in what you're doing?" I'm mean, I'm sorry, but did I miss the part where being a bully, a superficial nuisance and a troll became some respectable, admirable life? :innocent:

God I hate, like hate that like no other. I never check out other peoples blog when they do that as a rule.

Same. I figure it's best not to encourage such behavior by actually ever checking out their blogs. :innocent:

^^^

agreed,
well... not all the time sometimes i go check out them out just to see how horrible they are..
:innocent:

so maybe i am a bit pretentious

Anonymous people are just cowards... I get a bit of that every once in a while... people telling me that i can't be a model... and I don't want to be one... I just like to dress up and take pics of myself... What losers... ;)

I hate spam too! I think it's all-right if someone puts a link for their blogs at the bottom of their comments (tiny, without huge lines saying CHECK ME OUT, of course), but there are annoying people up there that write the same comment over and over again in as many blogs as possible and sometimes, even twice in the same blog! I've received like 3-4 same comments from the same girl, saying that she was happy to find my blog, and that i could check her blog... So, she totally forgot she had already send me that... How ridiculous...

Katnani, yeah people assume the stupidest things.

There's one girl who comments on every blog saying something about her meeting the cobrasnake or something..
So irritating.

Also, I would love some opinions on my new toolbar on the blog.
it has a tonne of different options for following, subscribing, face book and twitter...

wekilled? Is that header new? I looove it! I've mine quite similar.

Consrtuctive criticism on my blog Digital Diamonds (see signature) would be warmly welcome!
