All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

I already got a really awesome internship for this summer, too bad it's not fashion related though.

A girl I know did a fashion marketing internship in Paris and loved it.

Though she did have to cough up a lot of $$$ to be 'accepted' into the program so I'm not sure how worthwhile it was :S

If you are in NY and looking for an internship, especially if it's with a big company, I would start sooner rather than later. I just found out on Thursday that I got the internship at Christie's that I was going for and I sent them my resume back in March.

This is a little early since I want an internship next year or next summer; but, what should I wear to an interview for a more alternative fashion or pop magazine like Nylon, Paper, Interview, or V magazine. Could I wear jeans or would it be better for me to go classic with like a suit.

I am doing 2 internships this summer; one as a design intern at La ROK and for a stylist as a stylist assistant. It's almost the end of my internship cuz I start school the last week of aug...I learned alot but now I want a actual design job and it's been kind of hard for me because I am not a fashion major;but I am still trying...someone will take pity on me:cry: i hope......

Jeans, definitely with a blazer to make yourself look smart, casual, but professional. :flower: GOOD LUCK!

There is a website I know called fashioninternships.net. It's basically a database, but you have to pay and subscribe to it...
Does anyone know if it's worth it?

Or if there's another, better place to find fashion internships? :flower:

I usually find really good internships on craigslist.org and fashion.net

Don't forget about our "Networking" thread pinned at the top of this forum. .. Kimair has been posting quite a few internship opportunities that shs's found elsewhere.

I am dying to do a fashion intership in NYC summer 08. Is it too early to start applying? Based on reading this thread I have a list of websites to search through that people here have mentioned.
Also it seems that cold calling for info is a good idea?
And in-person is the only way interviews are conducted?

I am a Visual Communication student at an art school but I'd like to work in fashion publishing eventually as something like art director/creative editor/that kind of thing. This means I should try first to get a mag internship right? Or would anything help as long as it is fashion? I do NOT need an internship for school, I just think I need it to get my foot in the fashion industry door.

Also, another question....how to find housing? A summer internship would be like 3 months right? Do they have places to live temporarily? Most leases go for longer don't they? Anyway, i just have tons of questions, sorry.

Ugh, I am just a little overwhelmed! I just don't want to do anything wrong. Do you think it would hold me back that I'm an art student and not a fashion student? I was a fash major but I transferred schools and my current school doesn't have a fash program.

I'm just afraid that some great opportunity will pass me by because I didn't know something.

Thanks if anyone has any more answers. THis thread is great. I have to read the networking one next.....

^For somewhere to live, NYU has a summer program where you can stay in their housing for a few months. I'm not sure how much it costs, but my sister did it this summer and it went well

I can help you with a few of your questions..

It's definitely too early to start applying for a summer internship (Spring fashion week isn't even until Sept.). I would say Feb at the earliest.

Cold-calling isn't bad. It's when you turn in your resume and call them 50 times after that to ask if they've received your resume that bugs them.

In my personal experience, if you want to intern in NY, they will only conduct in-person interviews. I had to fly to NY for one day to interview for my internship.

There are tons of housing options in NY for the summer. Go to google and type "New York Summer Housing" and lots of places pop up. As someone already noted, NYU has a good summer program; so does FIT, so does Parsons. I would also try "The Webster"(www.websterapartments.org). It's super cheap. So cheap in fact, that if you were going to do a summer internship in the summer, you should apply now because it fills up that fast.

Hope this helps!

thank you julesrules and fashionicon! I am going to check out that webster thing right away. The only thing is I don't know what dates I'll need (assuming I land something) but I'll get as much info as possible anyway.

I set up an appointment with my advisor to arrange for getting credit for doing this since it seems a lot of the internship postings require that you're earning credits there. She can't see me for two weeks though since there are so many students with beginning-of-school schedule emergencies.

I know I have a lot of time but there is a lot of arranging and planning and contacting people to do I have a feeling....

Just in case anyone else has been wondering, I called webster apartments a few days ago and summer housing is already gone....:innocent:
