All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

Aw. You're welcome and it's no problem! Let me know how it works out.

Has anyone ever done an internship at Nordstrom or know anyone that has? Their website describes the type of degree programs they're looking for (retail management and fashion merchandising) but I'm a humanities major. I'm under the impression that it's more like a management internship and not so much about fashion.

shoegal - you did check our tfs networking thread right? There are a lot of postings about internships in NY. I'm sure you have checked there but just in case....

Ugh- if only I were alread in college!

There is an Esquire internship over at freefashioninterships.com that has my name written all over it!

yes Meg, thanks:flower:, i did but no answers yet.
Maybe I should write a better cover letter though

^ Maybe it's fine already but if you're worried, did you have your parents or friends who write well look over it? Also I know my school has a career center that helps with with all these sorts of things for free if you need it. Maybe your school has something like that and you can just make an appointment and see if they can help you spruce any of your materials up. Good luck though still. Don't give up too soon.

Also have you followed up with any phone calls? Sometimes that helps since a lot of places receive so many emails a day that they can seem flaky but they just have a hard time keeping track so you could have been lost in the shuffle. Maybe try to follow up on some if you have numbers.

Yes we have something like that at school, I will be going there on monday for sure!
Unfortunately i don't have the phone numbers, but i could try to find them!
Thanks!

I just found out I got the internship at Nordstrom and was wondering if anyone had completed it before? I searched the thread and didn't find anything though. . .

Congratulations LifeNatureLove! What sort of internship is it? I think there is some mention about Nordstrom internships, or at least department store internships in the Buyers thread :)

Hi Guys! :flower:

I'm going to be 18 in June and I would love ot have an internship or job thats fashion related. It doesn't matter where. However I don't have any job experience at all. Do you think anyone will take me?

^I found with my intership at Nordstrom, previous work experience helped A LOT. I would highly recommend checking into getting some work experience.

Thanks! I checked in the buyers thread but didn't find much info. . .
The internship with Nordstrom is more towards "moving up" specifically into store management, which is something I don't really want to get into. But I guess they work on an inverted triangle and promote from within so if I want to get into styling or buying with Nordstrom, I have to start out on the sales floor, which is where 80% of my internship will take place. The rest of the time will be behind the scenes working with visual, buyers, etc learning the company and store in case I want to come back as managment.

Am I the only one who is a little afraid of applying for internships?
I mean, considering the idea of being rejected... It all sort of frightens me! I know what I want to do but I'm scared of not getting there, failing and missing my chance.. I have to find a magazine internship within the next year, but as of now I can't seem to write my CV without deleting it all after a couple of sentences. I feel silly trying to impress and explain myself - I want my work to speak for itself... How can one get past these thoughts and just get on with it?

Sorry for the rant

^You shouldn't be scared! I don't have an internship, but I've managed to work up the nerve to send in my resume and go to an interview. Even if you get rejected, you won't be any worse off than you would be if you didn't try. I don't know if you are currently in school or not, but maybe you can get help from a career counselor/center if you're having trouble writing your CV. My school offers help and they really did improve my resume. :flower:

Exactly. It won't hurt you to send in your resume and go on an interview! If you get it, it could open so many doors for you. If you don't, there are so many more other internships you can apply for (think about it, there are tons!). You are the perfect candidate for at least a few of the things you apply for, every place is looking for different things and you might just be their favourite apple. :flower:

If you're afraid of failing than then you will never succeed in life. The fashion world, being one of the toughest industries to work in requires you to develop thick skin and get used to rejections. Countless of people get rejected many times before receiving their first ever pay check in the first industry.

As for writing a cover letter you are still young and will improve on it with time. Practice makes perfect. The more you write or what ever you're doing, the better you get at it which will translate into confidence necessary when an interviewee asks you to argue why you should be appointed instead of the other candidates.

the whole concept of internship is not only to get experience [and for school credits] but to get some kind of hands on skills ,regardless if it's menial or assist on simple projects. so with that they will take on an intern with no experience than a position that pays where the applicant must have experience.

Sorry, these have probably been posted before but I don't know much about internships and have a few questions.

1. How long do they typically run? Are summer internships harder to find/get? I'm planning on living in NYC during the summers since my school is in Santa Barbara.

2. Is previous work/intern experience in the fashion industry necessary to get a highly sought for internship?

THANKS!
