All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

Are there any websites that advertise fashion/media/PR etc internships in Australia? Or is it a different approach one takes here? Cold-calling? And if I were to approach them about a placement do I even refer to it as an internship? I rarely hear of internships here.

Oh, how I wish I lived in NY.

Bianca are you at Uni? I know some universities like my own do help out with internships (though mine doesn't really do fashion, because it doesn't offer fashion courses). However I have found some just through cold calling (well cold-emailing, you know what I mean :p ) and sending out my resume! I remember last year I emailed like, 4, and got 1 reply back and interned there whilst at uni. So definitely give it a go - someone has to take up free labour! :p :flower:

i have few questions: what exactly do you write in the email when "asking" for an internship? do you just write a few lines about yourself and then wait for a response or do you just send your resumé right away?

and what do you write to catch the readers attention? to make them think "this is the person we want and need" etc etc.

and exactly who do you write to when emailing about an internship?

Apply to internships just like any other job - with a cover letter about yourself and why you would like to intern at XYZ, and most importantly, how you will be an asset to them - not only what you will get out of it remember! Usually if they're polite enough they'll respond with interest or at least let you know they don't take interns, etc. I usually attach my resume to the cover letter as well.

And with who - try anyone. Assistants, or the department editors/heads, etc. Usually I try the assistants first, and if I get no response, I try the editors/heads. Surprisingly sometimes it's the assistants I get the least response from and the editors who have been more useful.

Have a look at this thread here:

^ They should have an HR department and that is who you should write to. The other people most of the time will not bother because they are too busy.

Conventionally you should try the HR department... but I've found I have never gotten a response from them because they're so busy with all these other requests, so I just go directly. Again, this depends on each company - there have been a couple of posts in this thread discussing who to contact. e-v-elina I really suggest you read this whole thread, I know it's long, but honestly, it's really helpful!!! :flower:

Posted elsewhere, but maybe I'll have better luck here!
Does anyone know about contacting Ford Models for an internship? I can only find fax and telephone numbers on their website and I know most places don't like to be bothered with phone calls.

I aplied for 11 internships last friday and have heard back from 4. Erin fetherston is full for summer but told me to apply in the faal. Zac is full. Bill Blass is full. The best is Twinkle by Wenlan, I got an interview for Tuesday everyone wish me luck!

good luck!

right now i'm interning for an online boutique, it's like a dream come true for me to be around all these clothes all day

:p

Are there any fashion magazines that have offices in Chicago?

I'm a journalism major and am applying for a few internships at various chicago magazines but wanted to know if any magazines like teenvogue, glamour, etc have offices here? I kind of want an internship that is fashion related..

the only magazine that is fashion related i know we have here is Chicago Social.

^If you look at the mast head in a magazine, some or possibly most have a section for Branch Offices. I'm looking at a Teen Vogue issue right now and they seem to have a Midwest branch, although I don't know exactly what kind of work they do there (could be just related to distribution, but I'm not sure.)

I'm not going with IMG World, they totally screwed me over. I'm sticking with my first choice who have already confirmed my internship.

I was going to suggest CS. There's also Factio Magazine, but I don't see that around as much as I used to so I don't really know what the story is here. I just looked up Teen Vogue's midwest branch, not sure where it is located but the area code (312) looks like Chicago. Her email is [email protected].

I'm looking for an internship or job in Los Angeles.. does anyone know anything that is still available... thanks for any help

It's summer now here in the U.S and I would like to get an internship for he summer of 09. When should I start sending out my resume and emailing people? I was thinking around thanksgiving. But, I am not sure. Also I just finished my first year of college; Is that too early for me to start looking for internships? I was thinking about work in editorial work at NYtimes, the New Yorker, or Interview magazine. But, because I am an Art History major working at the Met seems like it would be easier to get credit for when college starts back. I wouldn't be against working in a showroom though. I just want to work in fashion.

Crazeygal123 have a look at our Networking thread in this section. :) I highly suggest reading through this thread to get ideas on pursuing internships as well.

ms-nietzsche, I'm not sure but I think it would be hard to predict, it'll differ from case to case I'm assuming, and how each firm chooses to deal with each applicant?

rangerrick14 I've heard of people starting to secure summer placements around the end of summer/beginning of spring. Remember a lot of places are just finalising their current summer interns and they'll be swamped. Have a look at this thread and a couple of people have discussed when they applied. I know this thread is very long now, but it is seriously so helpful. I haven't heard or have personally experienced any problems with interning in only your 2nd year, but I have read commenters on the www.ed2010.com message boards saying that at times they have been overlooked in preference for seniors and juniors.

Apply to everything you have in mind, it's better to increase your chances. Maybe talk to your college about claiming credit for internships before applying though, so you get a better idea of what you can do. The Met internships are pretty competitive I've heard, but I'm sure they will be very fruitful and interesting. I think with editorial at NYtimes or the New Yorker, they may be more inclined to hire interns with English or Journalism majors, but you never know, give it a go.

How long does paternity leave because the director still needs to organise my visa in Hong Kong and my internship, he said starts late September for six months and last he emailed me back was 3rd May and still waiting for his reply. He usually emails straight away because he has a blackberry but now I'm worried.

Eurofashionjunki maybe give it another week and send him a short email just to re-confirm (as a way to remind him nicely and as always, very, very politely)?

I'm only 17 and I applied for around 15-20 internships and so many company's including but deffintly not limited to
marc by marc jacobs
zac posen
bill blass
michael kors
twinkle by wenlan
christian siriano
and entirely to many to name.

I landed two interviews one at Twinkle by Wenlan, and one at Christian V Siriano (yes like from project runway!). I nailed both of them (or atleast I think so). I just went in there and was my self. I dressed in a style I call urban elegance, including skiny jeans a button down vest converse. Very polished but with hints of your own style.

On the good news
I LANDED BOTH OF MY INTERNSHIPS!!!

So now this summer I will be doing both Christian V Siriano's and Twinkle by Wenlan's Summer internships.

I couldnt be more excited and this forum has helped so much!

A word of advice to those seeking internships who don't live in NYC or LA..
I was looking to obtain any fashion related experience I could while I was home for this summer.

I emailed a bunch of local boutiques/companies and found found a local modeling management center. I've been interning for since i've been home from college and it's become an invalulable experience. I've been styling for their weekly shoots for comp cards, become a model scout for them, and made incredible connections. Tommorow I've even been given the opportunity to style for a photo shoot for a local boutique which will be my first tear sheet & print work!

Don't be discouraged if you can't score an internship with Teen Vogue or Marc Jacobs, there are tons of opportunities that could be right in your local town!
