what ive learned about the fashion mag industry ( and this is what i heard from a previous fashion editor at a conde nast publication) is that fashion mags are not about writing and editing... the people who do the copy is usually just a small group in comparison to the rest of the magazines... FYI: FASHION EDITORS DO NOT WRITE COPY in case any of you were wondering. they have copy writers for that.
Not entirely true. As an editor you generate ideas, guide journalists and even edit articles and features yourself if you want it down your way. In order to do that you have to come from a journalistic background with experience in writing for a magazine. So as in editor you are most definitely involved in the actual writing, especially if you don't have a team of top journalists.
Further more editors do occasionally write as well. Obviously an editor in chief is mostly involved in overlooking the magazine as a whole making the more crucial decisions, the junior editors have their hands full making sure things are done on time and sometimes even staying after hours helping their journalists. This is how it works in the real world unlike at the top where a highly paid editor just attends fashion shows and is not too involved with creating content for the magazine. Decent writing skills and good understanding of how content is built up is a must.
