All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

I was offered an internship, one with MTV in the wardrobe dept and one with Cosmo in their fashion closet...I was just wondering what would be more beneficial to me in the long run, if my ultimate goal is to become a stylist?

Depends on what your goal is:

Cosmo ... if you want to work in print (ads, catalogs, campaigns, etc.) and fashion (fashion magazines, fashion shows for designers).

But then ... if you want to be a celebrity stylist ... maybe MTV becuase of the potential connections in the music/celeb world.

Two different worlds that don't always cross over so pick wisely.

I was scared someone would say that lol. The problem is I don't know what kind of stylist I want to be, I have assisted a freelance editorial stylist in the past so I guess I have a sense of what it would be like to work in print....I dont know what to do:(. If I end up choosing to work in print and I don't like it would be easy to change in to celebrity styling or vice versa?

Hhhmm.... I think it would be easier to change from print/fashion to celebrity styling than vice versa. Like...if you work at Cosmo you will probably also get in touch with the "celebrity world" but if you work at MTV I doubt that you will learn much about print/ the fashion magazine world.
As for me I would definitely choose Cosmo, but it really depends on what you like better.

I would also choose Cosmo because of the reasons NadineATC said; also, you must've received a detail of what your responsibilities would be as an intern from each company, maybe those will give you an idea of what would be better suited for you.
If you do a good job, you could go on to receive a FT offer, which would be great at either company, although I've heard MTV's job market is grim (remember they went crazy with layoffs last year). Either way, you'll get a great experience from whichever you choose:)

not sure if someone can help me out, but in terms of a more hands-on experience and establishing contacts or a possible paid position, what's a better internship: WWD or Elle?

thanks for any advice!

Marni41 it's very difficult to tell which one is going to have better contacts or offer a paid position in the end (VERY few and far between - especially in times like these) because these places have girls interning there full time for months on end waiting to be hired :p Are they both fashion ones, or editorial, etc etc? Just based on the two, I'd choose WWD.

^both are fashion. i guess i phrased that question incorrectly, i'm well aware that i will not be hired after a few months of interning, i guess i'm just trying to see where i would be given the most room for growth. it seems that wwd would be more hands-on, since it is a daily. but i'd be working for someone higher up at elle. i was just wondering if anyone had experiences at either.

thanks for your help cicciolina:flower:

If you are hoping to add some writing clips to your portfolio, WWD actually gives you that opportunity. Elle will have you organizing their closet all day. ;)

I'm looking for fashion journalism experience in the UK.
I'm finding it hard to find a placement.
Has anyone got any advice?

I'm going to have to intern from end of January/start of February to maybe mid June-July 2009. I'm wondering when I should start searching and contacting them, how many weeks/months in advance? It would be considered a Spring one, right? Thanks. :flower:

Hey,

I may intern a designer during next Fashion Week in Paris before school starts (I'll be a fashion freshman this year... ).

My question is, can I help a fashion designer during fashion week even I don't know sewing, pattern-cutting etc...
What can I do ?

Please help me !

Miss Laura have a look through this thread. I know the 76 pages are really daunting but there's a lot of great advice in them. This thread is mainly focused on the US, but there have been some past posts about the UK :)

katherine try for about 6 months before? They'd be just finishing up Fall interns now, and they'll be looking to hire Spring ones soon... so actually I'd say start emailing them now till November!

IloveDiorHomme you never know until you try. If you're just helping out during fashion week anyway, you probably won't be doing anything like sewing/cutting/etc but maybe like, helping dress the models, castings, general errands, etc

I found WWD a really great place to work.. though I was in editorial, however I did speak to some of the fashion interns who seemed to be enjoying it and they all were so lovely and sweet (some other interns at my other place weren't so great!). The general work place seemed to be sooo supportive as well. At WWD they do shoots almost like every day which can be fun, and they seemed less pretentious.

But then again a friend of mine was at Elle and loved it, however she was interning there full time for like 4-5 months. It's a hard call - also Elle seems to be going through quite a tumultuous time (Joe Zee, Nina Garcia, etc etc) whereas WWD is pretty much internationally respected. Clearly I'm just biased though :p

Cicci is right ... during fashion week, the sewing and pattern cutting is pretty much over ... they will have their skilled seamstresses there for final fittings and things ... but I'm sure they won't trust an intern to make the final details perfect right before the show. But there's tons of work to be done ... running errands, answering phones, dressing models ... it's very hectic during this time.

Here's a thread about volunteering during fashion week ... think most of it's in NY, but it's similar.
