All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

Gah I want to apply for the conde nast internship but I don't graduate until mid to late June

I am from australia, but my parents have recently moved to the US. i thought it would be a good chance for me to spend time with them and get experience at american conde nast (such a brilliant opportunity!)..

it must be crazy competitive - ive been employed at a conde nast sister company, as well as some experience at respected titles such as harpers and vogue (not american Hb or V though) and i havent heard anything back!! so dissapointed.. i think emailing your resume to HR would be a good idea though so they have it in hard copy and its much harder to forget!

I'm going to apply for an internship at a fashion magazine. In the process they require me to send 4 story ideas (max 100 words) for the magazine. Now, my questions are, what type of story do they want? Are they really looking at the story or they just want to know how you write and make sure you're not a complete imbecile since they only require 100 words or less?

It's not really clear, but I think that they may not want you to actually "write" a story ... because in fashion magazines, the term "story" refers to a fashion photography layout ... you know, like all the ones we see posted here with the amazing photos.

If you already understand it as this ... then you won't need to read any further. But if you don't understand what a fashion story is, here's the idea:

A "fashion story" is a group of pictures showing clothes along a theme ... things like like a "color story" (clothes that all have one similar color in them), or a story like "Winter Wonderland" featuring something like outer wear for the winter time, or a southwest theme (which was very popular when bohemian was big), or perhaps something fun like "Spring Break", showing the newest in swimwear and casual stuff for the beach. It's the theme or concept that makes all the images flow together and make sense as a group. You should take your inspiration for stories from current and upcoming fashions and find a creative way to show them off.

If that is what they are talking about, then I think that they do want to see how you get your ideas across, so good writing is important. But ... they also want to see if you undrstand how to put a story together, what sort of creative ideas you have and if you are up on the type of fashion that they feature in their magazine. Each magazine has a style and a certain demographic and I think that they would like to see that you understand what theirs is all about, as well.

3. The pace in the fashion department can be frantic at times. Please describe an on-the-job situation where you
demonstrated your organizational ability, and one where you demonstrated creative problem-solving skills.
4. Suggest four story ideas for the magazine, including two for the fashion section, in 100 words each or less.

^i think the two they're talking about is what BetteT told you.
the other two i have no idea. maybe sthg about trends, brand, collections, beauty... i have no idea!
what people ask you just to intern is a bit crazy!

for the fashion stories (shooting, editorials etc.) i suggest you to choose two themes and then choose your mood, and then the clothes.
check on style.com every collections and write on a papersheet what would correspond to your theme... of course you can choose vintage items, secondhandshops etc. then do some "collage" and then write about your story... that would be easier for you, i think!

and of course pay attention to that :

Yeah, I know it's kind of a comlicated process when you don't know what they want. Maybe I'll just email them just to make sure.

Yep ... I still think that is what they want. Just an outline or synopsis to propose story ideas ... not actually write an article.

And if two are fashion, then, as Berlin says, perhaps makeup, hair, or even topics outside of that like home decor. To determine what would be to their liking, I'd study back issues of the magazine to see what sort of stories and articles they do. If it's geared to teens, then do things that would appeal to a young girl. If it's a magazine for young mothers/housewives or to carreer women ... then the stories would be a lot different. Just don't copy anything they've done ... think up something new, or at least a new twist on an old theme.

I'm 16 years old, and I'm currently an online intern with a pretty successful online women's magazine. I'm also an intern with a successful local fashion designer.

On Condenast's site, they state that they only take college students for internships but I was wondering if it was worth a shot to apply for a summer 2008 internship when I'm 17, and if anyone knows of any high school aged internship opportunities for other magazines that aren't Condenast-owned, if Condenast doesn't allow this?

i don't think i've ever seen a HS intern at conde, except for one really nice and cute boy who was 17. but his cousin worked in the same building and had hooked him up...normally it's college students. unless you're related to someone?

Is it practically impossible to apply for an internship in New York if... one does not even live in the USA? I live in Australia but I'm 100% prepared to go the the US during my university holidays (one in June for about a month, another in November for about 3 and a half months). I have read though that many interns are advertised and hired at the last minute, whereas I know in Sydney here I have been able to organise them months (even up to a year) in advance.

If anyone can help me...
I was offered multiple summer internships, and I'm having trouble picking right now because I didn't expect such positive replies... Would it be okay if I asked these companies if I can reply later, and how much later should I expect? These are with fashion PR companies and fashion/entertainment networking companies, etc. Or, should I just pick one right now?
I'm having trouble because some of them (that I actually sort of want more...) say they're very interested in me and that they'd love to have me, but they want me to inquire later in the year when they're hiring for the summer. Should I seize one that I already got offered now, or take a chance and wait?

a- most higher end places will look for older/more experienced/mature interns- no HS students...

b- very diff to get an internship if you are not already in the country/city

c- don't know of any national mags based in chicago...but maybe a local one?...there are model agencies and photo studios though...maybe find one and ask them?

d- diorable...take what you are offered and switch later if you get a better one......

Work Experience Placement!

ok i know that this has probably been posted and asked loads but please could i have some help......

I live in the uk and i'm in year 12 studying as levels. i have to do a workexperience placement and i would love to do it in fashion.
After i've done my a levels etc i want to follow a career in fashion..designing.

Basically i dont know where to start looking, who do i write to? am i old enough? what department? etc
any information would be so greatful!

I want to try POP magazine so so bad but I know I wouldnt get it
