All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

Did anyone apply for the Conde Nast internship or has had any experience on it? When did you hear you got the internship or not?
paperbag - for me, immediately for one, took about 4-5 days for the other. But this wasn't for the big summer internship program that the HR department runs.

^ I think I went overboard with my application. I sent a cover letter, resume and two writing samples. I think they will probably just chuck it in the garbage lol

I have my resume done, I just need to write a good cover letter. I've been reading mixed advice on the length and style of a cover letter. The one I wrote for a previous non-fashion job is a really standard, fill-in-the blanks type letter thats only one paragraph. I don't know what I could write to make myself sound more appealing than other candidates.

I think it's important for cover letters to be tailored for each job/internship. You need to relate your experience to the position (whatever it is, paid or unpaid) and as well as expressing how much you would like to work for them, also make it clear how great you are so they choose you :p

paperbag that sounds fine, you have nothing to worry about. I assume you applied for something in editorial, news or features then rather than straight fashion?

^Thanks :) By the way, do you think an internship in the Features department of a magazine would require writing samples when you apply?

I applied for anything and everything. I was going to New York anyways for the summer so at least an internship would give me something to do

julesrules I have seen them ask for it, but I think they do understand if you don't have any samples as being interns they know we're not meant to have a lot of experience anyway!

If you like men's fashion magazines, Details has advertised for interships.

Details -
This internship provides exposure to the magazine side of editorial
photography through working with portfolios and art, shoot production, and
communication with artists and agencies.
Responsibilities include:
-Portfolio returns and records
-Flat file maintenance
-Model release organization
-Scouting locations
-Internet research
-General administrative tasks

You just have to sift through all the ads lol
It sounds nice.I would probably prefer working for a womens fashion magazine but whatever gets me the best experience is fair game.

I'm thinking that this internship might not be the exact one for me anyway. I'm looking for something more to do with the style department rather than the journalism aspect of a magazine, if you know what I mean.

There's many more internships in the fashion department than the features department. From memory on ed2010 there's Marie Claire, Seventeen, etc. Fashion writing internships are so hard to come by.

Though when I say fashion department, it's more like, returning items of clothing and keeping the closet clean and mayyybe going on a shoot or two, nothing much else.

Btw if anyone wants to do summer, apply NOW. So many publications have already secured their summer interns...

^ Someone looked at my resume etc. back in December, and told me to "touch base" with them in March because that's when they start looking for interns for the summer..should I wait or just start contacting them now?

Hmm I suppose you can do it in March... if they told you that. The completed Summer 2008 intern lists that I have come across for other publications are probably done by really stressed out assistants then who are ahead of themselves :p

I need help here... I'm a law student who's on hiatus from college till October, and I'd like to intern at a fashion publication for some time (since I know design firms will have very little use for me), but I have a few questions:
a) what kind of resume/CV does one send to places like these? I know it'll probably need to be different from the kind I send to law firms, but what'll they be looking for? Would listing my work experience at law firms be any use?
b) how far ahead do I need to apply if I'm in India and want an internship for any length of time between June and October? Are firms/publications in the UK etc ok with their interns coming from a different part of the world, and a non-design-related field?
c) I can't do this for school credit, and most mags etc seem to insist that their interns need to be people who get credit at school for their work. My school obviously won't grant me that, but are there any places that would be ok with a law student working for them? - fashion journalism is something I'm interested in, but won't get too much of a chance to pursue in India..
d) failing all that, if I'd like to try freelancing, does anyone know of publications/sites that would be ok with accepting work from someone who's had nothing fashion-related published other than a blog (and I'm not even sure if I want to cite that as evidence of an interest in fashion, or if it'll be acceptable)?
I'm fluent in English, and have some elementray French skills (but I don't know whether to cite those).

I got an interview with a top British communications company in Hong Kong. Richard Branson is one of their clients. They just replied to me today!!!! At least, it is a step up from being ignored!

oo! that's exciting eurofash! So much better to get a response than not to. Good luck on the interview and tell us how it goes.

^^Congrats!

Ugh, so I just called a few modeling agencies to ask about internships and most of them were already closed. I should've figured that. But for the ones that were still open, I couldn't figure out which department line I should connect to. Oh well, I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay during the summer besides webster apts. or nyu rez? some of the furnished apts they have when you google furnished apts (furnished quarters etc) are really nice, but a total waste of money when you put it into perspective. any ideas would be great!

How about the Markle or Brandon? Btw did you get into where you applied before? They have already secured summer interns there. Apparently the New Yorker have something similar for students too, but it's co-ed.

Congratulations eurofashionjunki!!!

julesrules good luck! Are you calling agencies in the US?
