Animals at the fashion shows

Olivier Theyskens spring/summer 2002 show- these poor birds on that shoes are or were alive I think! It's not normal!!!!! He could use something other! I don't like him now- I was thinking that he's such a great designer because his clothes for Rochas are great. I was wrong...

That's so crazy! What the hell:angry: Stupid stupid, I'm lost for words! People at style decided to put this nonsense up, makes me even more  !

squashed rats and butterflies? and those poor birds...they never asked to be pinned upon heels. it's simply inhumane, and cruel.

no one should have to make a living killing. it's violence we can stop.

The wild animals I have an issue with, but don't see a problem with dogs. I work with a breed rescue, and recommended to someone who works with greyhound rescue that she contact the fashion incubator here to see about working together on a fashion show to raise awareness. When it comes to racing dogs, unfortunately there's an unlimited supply who need homes, both from here and other countries. Many of the sighthounds look a lot like the models, I think ;)

There was a dead bird on miss Tennant's head in the latest Dior couture show. And of course, there were two horse-drawn carriages, so the show included horses as well!

I don't think he should be beaten. But I think designers need to sometimes own up to the implications of their supposedly untamed creative process. A black girl. In shredded crocodile and chiffon. With ivory jewelry and an alligator head cap. I think the code here is clear. If you take it at a little more than surface value, it's not only the crocodile's permanent headache you begin to feel pity for.

I agree. "Artists" seem to feel they are not responsible for the consequences of their work. (I tried to raise the issue of responsibility in another thread and was beaten by an angry mob myself ...) I can't understand why fashion shouldn't be held to ordinary ethical standards.

The animal skulls remind me of how Jeffrey Dahmer collected roadkill under his house as a child.

It's true that little dogs are very fashionable these days, and being fashionable is never good for a breed. However, being carried along with its person may be a pretty good life for a lapdog ... perhaps much better than being left at home. I know more than one person who isn't much with people, but would do anything for a dog. In fact I have a relative who saw a dog being attacked by a pit bull (many of whom are very sweet and not bred to be aggressive, of course) from her upstairs window. Without hesitation she ran into the street and hauled the pit bull in kill mode off the other dog while other neighbors just watched. There are lots of people who don't treat animals well; but I don't pre-judge exactly who they'll be.

i despise this trend... its one thing to carry your cute little domesticated dog (which is used to being carried and has been domesticated for thousands of years), but its another thing with the horses, tigers and wolves. And if you've ever seen how animals are skinned (beaten with clubs and electrocuted with probes up the anus, and often alive when they begin tearing the skin from their bodies) you may not be so interested in wearing/admiring fur. this is stupidity and i cant believe anyone would participate in this willingly.

They fur discussion is long, veeeery long. I don't wear it, especially because faux-fur for me is always prettier and you don't get the feeling that a animal's life had ended for you. That's a terrible persespective.

And although I don't believe it'll end [even if we REALLY want it to, I think it could decline but unfortunately not vanish but I'm a pessimist] they could AT LEAST don't do it in so many mean ways. I mean, why do they have to cook the poor thing ??!

The whole concept of wearing another live being skin is just ridiculous. And the designers have a big fault on this...

What season what that? I'd love to know!

A lot of you who are attacking these designers for their use of fur and other dead animals are probably just as guilty as they are. If you wear suede or leather or even wool and cashmere do you realize the HUGE amount of mistreament that goes on with that? Obviously cows are slaughtered for their leather (many of which are not also used for meat) and that in itself is a huge ethical issue. The sheep and goats that we get wool and cashmere from do not have it much better. They aren't killed but the confinement and treatment on the farms are equivalent to a vietnamese P.O.W. prison. I would rather be a dead canary on a shoe then stuck in a pen only to be endlessly mutilated once a month until my wool is no longer soft enough and I killed and left to rot.

I am not going to get into what goes on in dairy farms and egg ranches for those that think being vegetarian prevents animal cruelty.

Mamba, Amelia, keep in mind that those canaries were not killed in order to make those shoes but were already dead and stuffed and THEN used for the shoe. Olivier Theyskens is a fan of taxedermy, most of the animals died naturally.

I agree that Galliano's use of fur can be atrocious and distasteful but Rick Owens for Revillion is FAR worse.

Well, not to get too art-theoretical nor too tangental in regards to this thread, but I see it as an extreme example of 'othering' and cultural fetishism; something I see Galliano as the worst offender of in contemporary fashion, and the main reason I quite simply do not like him.

Simply put, by having a model (a black woman no less, how subtle!) wearing what looks to be a tribal/caveman/neanderthal get-up, Galliano visually demonstrates historically Euro-colonialistic ideas of what an exotic/foreign culture is about(ie, the assumption that Africans live in tribes and are generally base & savage). As the model is in a dual role as both a sexually appealing woman walking down a crisp, clean runway and also a cultural signifier for a foreign culture & ethnicity, Galliano portrays this tribal lifestyle as exotic and highly appealing, all without making any concessions for the actual reality of how African tribes (if you would call them that) live.

It's all fantasy make-believe bullsh*t at the cost of another culture. What's worse in my mind, is that no one in the industry (to my knowledge) calls him on it, despite how f*cking blatant it is.

It’s F/W 2002/3 show.

The real wolfs would never stand to be on catwalk ever. These are dogs. Most likely, they are either Alaskan malamute or Siberian husky.

I do have husky at home and it seems to me that these dogs look very scared.

Victim- I think you're really right. Stella is a vegetarian, she's famous, her clothes are wearing by famous stars and everybody is happy. There's a choice. And it's pretty unfair that they (some designers) use animals at f.shows- what they're thinking? That their shows will be more original? Ha! That's not true!

Is. that. real. birds. ?
    :(   :yuk:
OMG!!!

i hate fur. and all animal cruelty... especially in the fashion industry.
i support what PETA stands for.

I have no problems with the dogs on the runway, but the dead foxes as hats is disgusting.
