Asian Faces In High Fashion

Thanks mathiaskatz & Fancyfree for the additions!

So that must've explained why Hyunji was in Rome the other day? - congrats on D&G!

And the past four seasons have been consistent (seriously!). Don't see how/why they would stop now. Good luck to the models for FW18 ads. :lucky:

How does it feel, Kohei?

While he stepped off with a very strong FW18 showlist
and an impressive resume in the ad department.
It was his next gig that should warrant a bit of recognition:

It's no secret that Asian male models receive little to zero appreciation for covers
- an area of alarming disparity with few representations.
It should also be noted that the playing field just isn't leveled while knowingly
there are plenty of working Asian male models at a given time.
Not many are given the opportunity to improve their career.
A real issue that folks in the industry are inattentive to. May we see more progress.

Indeed, another achievement for the Japanese talent whose fame has been unprecedented,
but well earned and rightfully. Congratulations for the many!

^^ I can admit I don't follow male models as much or at all really. However, I think Kohei is coolest. Not to mention his success in such a relativity short time. I hope the stems doesn't blow out quickly because the guy a star.

Jeenu M., another promising male model. He is ethnically Sri Lankan but grew up in Norway.

Had a good FW season, walked for Fendi, McQueen, Boss, Marni, Brooks Brothers, etc. Has an ed in Vogue Hommes shot by Ethan James Green.

Major congratulations to the ladies on this feat as the first Asian models on British Vogue.
Its inclusion and message are positive and simply makes sense.
Certainly a watershed moment of poignant and relevant time in need.

All it really take is the creative and open-minded individuals
who believe and care to stand up for a cause, and to proceed, commit and fulfill that pledge
- with the responsibility and vision that weigh astronomically -
is rather praiseworthy once it is realised.

But more importantly, acknowledged freely to the public
in a monumental and honourable manner.

I must say, assembling a star cast of fashion’s most-talked-about new faces proved a truly exciting task. Even five years ago – and certainly 10 or 20 years ago – if you were shooting a group cover like this, the girls would not have looked like these young women do. But one of the great positives of the past few months is the fashion industry finally embracing a concept that has defined my entire working life: diversity. When I say diversity, I want to be clear that it is never just about black and white for me. It’s about diversity across the board – whether that’s race, size, socio-economic background, religion, sexuality. That’s what I want to celebrate with this cover.

To me they represent a new global idea that anything is possible.

True words spoken from industry heavyweights like Mr. Enninful. Thank you.

Here's to the new chapter ~

^ Actually not entirely sure if Radhika/Yoon Young are the first to grace Vogue UK. Are they? Correct if wrong.

As of now, of recent time, they are indeed the first Asians to do so. Especially under Enninful.

These are just some of the more recognised models that I know of (so some names that I don't know may be missing). Anyone else?

Just wondering what people's opinions are.

What do we consider as campaigns? In what format do they come like? And how are they presented as?

What would be viewed as print campaign vs. lookbook/catalogue? How are they different and look like?

What would be viewed as an ad commercial (TVC) vs. a brand product promoted via a video format? What's the distinguish here?

New Indian model Tuhir Brahmbhatt, signed with Anima creatives in Mumbai and with Premium models in Paris.

To follow gbam, mathiaskatz and Tesanger jen, another face that is on the rise: Arun Gupta.

Apparently his background consist of Singaporean/Indian/Indonesian. Born in Singapore but grew up in London, now based in NYC.

He's doing a decent job for a starter.

Is fashion going through another phase of Indian models?

With the recent success/spotlight on models such as Radhika, Dipti, Saffron, Jeenu and Arun, for examples, are gaining traction and the exposure of beauty and talent from South/SE Asia seems to seep its way into mainstream. All of a sudden there's just buzz and interest in them, which is obviously a good thing.

And that one article that was posted earlier, couldn't ring any truer words - this selective bunch of Indian models are indeed diverse and unique... from skin colour to hair, facial features to geography of where they were born, etc. (They do stray away from conventional ideals, but I personally am disappointed to have not seen MORE traditional Indian beauties, whom are precisely conventional beautiful by many standards, making it bigger in the commercial modelling industry, or HF for that matter. How could they not? What is it? Forget the politics and appreciate the beauty and talent and utilise them more.)

From that same article it'd be nice to see some/all of them get recognised because they're promising.

Let's see this momentum translate/lead to something bigger. That's the real test, or something we ought to keep an eye on. We cannot have a couple good season then start to fade after a brief moment - they are more than just that.

Good luck to all South and South East Asians trying to make it big! :lucky:

Tuhir is absolutely gorgeous. Like a face out of multicultural-antiquity. Hope he has a chance to strike it big.

There are so many gorgeous Persian, Syrian and East Indian faces. Unfortunately, they are oftentimes overlooked— much like Asian models, since they are simply not in vogue, despite all the hot air swapped around the industry about diversity and equality. That, and the more conservative nature of such cultures will discourage these gorgeous individuals from pursuing modelling, particularly of the men.

MDC Updates:
Cong He is finally on the Top 50, joining Fernanda, Jing and Sora.
Sohyun Jung and Xie Chaoyu are now on the hot list, joining Hoyeon.

How is yoon young bae not on the hot list yet ?
she will be very soon I expect

Yes at the bolded part. Good point, didn't think of that. Would be indeed somewhat complicated for those individuals to navigate through the industry, and furthermore for real people to accommodate/support them for not opting to be subjected to certain requirements or the "bad" habits.

At the same time, it's a case by case, so that's also exciting in the sense that we may have bold personalities that aren't necessarily conservative/traditionalist. Change the narrative/perception/attitude despite not having to identify with the said culture or degrade the customs of that culture.

On another note, India has a few good prospects on the horizon especially regarding to innovation and economic growth. See how the dynamics of the fashion industry vis a vis India plays out... how receptive and strategic it'll get.
