Confessions of a Shopaholic Movie

Arh! I can't believe I didn't find out about this movie till two days ago. I really love the books..read them all. Hope the film is not a total let down...

Just thought I'd revive this thread since I've been seeing the trailer a lot lately (and it's caused a pretty lively discussion)! I feel like I'm in the minority here, but I'm not too upset that the plot's been moved to NYC with American characters (disregarding the fact that I live in America :P)

I think that the movie is mostly based off the first book but she does go to Manhattan eventually, so it's not totally out of left field, ya know? I loved that it took place in London (one of my favorite shopping cities in the world) but truthfully, it could take place anywhere: A Denny & George scarf could easily be a Hermes scarf; Ally Smith store could easily be bebe or Marciano, etc. plus NYC is both the financial and fashion capital of the world. Most movie adaptations aren't exactly like the books - there are some things that need to be changed in order for it to work as a 2-hour movie or whatever.

From the trailer, I still think it looks funny so I'm going to watch it with an open mind and then wait to judge how faithful it is to the book until afterwards.

if they did do the next one, how exactly will "shopaholic take Manhatten" if she already lives in NY ?
Maybe she'll go to London!

Is Pat Field styling?

Yep, I believe she is! I love her.

Mirik, thanks for posting all those awesome pics from the movie!!! How cute is Isla Fisher?! I have to say, I love that purple plaid coat that she wears - I found a similar one on Bluefly, thanks to the movie's website. Thank goodness for that :P

Can't you tell. The Carrie look is all over her.

I can't believe this nightmare is still happening. I heard a rumour that they might change the end because of the worldwide economic crisis.
Pathetic.

Jerry Bruckheimer is my enemy.

That's what it is, just a rumor. They may have re-shot some of it, but I don't think it was because of the economic crisis. I don't see how changing the movie would affect anyone any different - isn't the movie about Becky overcoming her bad spending habits and ultimately finding her strengths?

the styling for Carrie is a billion times better. This styling is just too much for me. Carrie had some extravagant yet still wearable outfit. This is just toooo over the top. Lord, look at all the colors of the rainbow in one outfit.

^ Agree, even though I'm not one of those that think Carrie is some huge style icon, I can appreciate her style was 1000 x better than this. The styling for the movie is tacky, awful & ott and very different to Rebeccas style in the books which seemed more classic

Every time I see the poster of clips, it's just a big EWWWW. The styling is just gross. I don't read the book. Is she suppose to be a fashion victim?

No she's a fashionista. Not a fricken label basher. The styling is all wrong.

She's wears things from the High Street stores (LK Bennett, TopShop, Jigsaw) mixed with labels (Dolce and Gabanna boots, Marc Jacobs). In the second book she gets more into the labels when she goes to New York and is introduced to Barneys, Bloomingdales and Bergdorfs (she ends up working at Barneys in the third book as a personal shopper).

Suze is also totally WRONG. She's a old money blonde (picture someone like Sara Buys who is Tom Parker-Bowles wife and works at UK Bazaar). I always picture that Suze's wedding dress is McQueen in the third.

Like I said a few pages back Becky Bloomwood would NEVER carry a Louis Vuitton bag. Mulberry YES, maybe a 2.55 but Vuitton or Gucci NO.

 Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg I'm still so upset that they have ruined my favourite book series.

^ I feel your pain, it's so disappointing that they've changed everything because if they'd stuck to the book we could've had sequels etc to look forward too. Becky can't take Manhattan now since she's already there, ugh, this film will be just like all the other bland chick flicks

and the trailer makes it seem like Beckys working for Luke? And I wonder if Sacha will be mentioned or Tarquin

Becky Bloomwood was never meant to look like that in the books
Also Isla Fischer plays her really good, but the clothing... yuck!

Actually, I think the movie is based on all the books, not just the first one. They obviously had to make changes to make it work into a movie, ya know? Did you catch the picture of Suze in a wedding dress? So they must've taken some elements from the 3rd book too, at least. I'm not really into bashing movies before I've seen them in the theatre, so I'm still definitely giving this one a chance, even if it looks totally different from the books. Besides, Isla Fisher is in it and she has been such a highlight in her other movies (Wedding Crashers and Definitely, Maybe come to mind), I don't think that it can be bland!

It's not bashing when a book series you've read years ago and that you enjoyed is blatently dumed down and Americanized. Not seeing the movie has nothing to do with it, they've completely changed the elements of the book
