I searched and couldn't find a thread. It's official now.

The Party of the Year Returns: The Work of Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada to Be Celebrated this Spring at the Met

The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced Wednesday that their spring 2012 exhibition will be Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion, a fascinating exploration of these two Italian designers from two very different eras, in a format inspired by Miguel Covarrubia's "Impossible Interviews" published in Vanity Fair in the 1930s. The exhibition, which will be curated by the Costume Institute's curator in charge, Harold Koda, and curator, Andrew Bolton, will feature approximately 80 designs by Schiaparelli (1890-1973) from the late 1920s to the early 1950s and the work of Ms. Prada from the late 1980s to present. Set to open on May 10th, the grand unveiling will be preceded by the annual Costume Institute Benefit Gala, co-chaired this spring by actress Carey Mulligan, designer Miuccia Prada, and Anna Wintour, the Editor in Chief of Vogue. Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, will serve as honorary chair. While the guest list for the party of the year is yet to be announced, Baz Luhrmann will be the exhibition and gala's creative consultant. He will be joined by Nathan Crowley, who will serve as production designer, and Raul Avila, who has overseen the benefit's magnificent decor since 2007.

I love the 1920's & 30's tie-ins having Baz and Carey involved with The Great Gatsby coming out next year. Looking forward to this one, hopefully will inspire some really old glamour on the red carpet.

Confirmed: Next Year's Met Costume Institute Exhibit Will be 'Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion'

The Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute confirmed previous reports that next year's exhibit will showcase designs by Prada and the late Elsa Schiaparelli. Reports WWD:

After breaking records with “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” last spring, the Costume Institute will be examining the work of these two Italian designers, from the way they broke with fashion convention and subverted notions of taste and glamour to their affinity for the art world.

Australian film director Baz Luhrmann has been tapped as a creative consultant for the exhibit; he'll also help with the production design for the benefit. Surely not by coincidence, Carey Mulligan, who's starring in Luhrmann's forthcoming remake of The Great Gatsby, will co-chair the Met Gala on May 7 with Miuccia Prada and Anna Wintour.

The exhibit will feature about 80 designs, a combination of pieces by Schiaparelli from the late twenties to the early fifties and by Prada from the late eighties through today. The main reason for choosing the Schiaparelli theme now is that the Costume Institute obtained a large portion of the designer's archive from the Brooklyn Museum in 2009. As for the connection to Prada:

“Once we got Schiaparelli as the core part of what we wanted to do, it became a logical jump to Miuccia,” Koda said. “They are both Italian women, and even though Miuccia might not describe herself as a feminist, what we see is these two very strong women with a very strong aesthetic.”

While Schiaparelli’s work can’t reference Prada’s — she died in 1973 — and Prada’s work never references Schiaparelli’s, there are “significant resonances” between their designs, according to Koda. “They are both very provocative for their time,” Koda said. “We thought it would be very interesting to pit these two women together in an anachronistic conversation.”

The show will be structured as an imaginary conversation between the two designers; different sections will juxtapose their opinions on various topical themes, including "On Art," "On Politics," "On Women," and "On Creativity."

In other news, this year's underwriter for the exhibit is Amazon, so you can bet there will be lots of fancy Kindle downloads for the show as well.

How SHOCKING. I've been reading about Schiaparelli and was just thinking how similar she was to Miuccia. Schiparelli herself was AMAZING, it's a really incredible story. This exhibit sounds fantastic.

I guess they are not slowing down with the exhibits .. first McQueen .. now Schiaparelli and Miuccia?

Whats next???

McQueen's exhibit would be a tough act to follow but this sounds absolutely fabulous. A fashion innovator and visionary of the past meets today's ultimate trendsetter. It will be very interesting to say at least.

Totes excited...:woot:

I'm really jazzed about the convo between Elsa and Miuccia and how it will come about in person...^_^

This actually sounds like a really cool idea for the exhibit. I don't know how they'll top Savage Beauty, but it should still be pretty amazing, not to mention different.
