Do Baftas have anything to do with Oscar noms?.. is there a relation at all between the voting pools? I'm happy Thandie got a nom.. I'm suprised Keira didn't get a nod though.. considering well.. she's british lol..

I don't think they have anything to do with eachother officially, but it usually gives a hint to favourites in the academy.

All the awards leading up to the Oscars is considering "buzz." The more awards you get from critics or the GG or the BAFTAs, the higher the chance you'll recieve an Oscar...

Heath Ledger will win the Oscar, Brokeback Mountain is simply moving, touching and incredibly powerful.
I'll bet you everything, Heath wins(don't be surprised if after the Oscar ceremony I'm out in the streets cause I am risking just too much with this thing of Heath winning but...)

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
George Clooney, "Syriana" :woot:
Matt Dillon, "Crash"
Will Ferrell, "The Producers"
Paul Giamatti, "Cinderella Man"
Bob Hoskins, "Mrs. Henderson Presents"

That's just ridiculous, how come Jake Gyllenhaal not be nominated? Is it because they pushed him for best leading instead of supporting? Can't believe that!

SPOILER!!KEEP AWAY IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN BBM

For those who've seen BBM, don't tell me the scene in which he's driving to
Heath's house and he's so happy singing that song "King of the road" and returns home in his truck trying not to cry because Ennis had the girls that weekend and he had to leave, doesn't deserve a nom?
I couldn't stop crying.

I wish Michel Cote could get an oscar for best male performance.... He was STUNNING in C.R.A.Z.Y. !

I think categories like best actor/actress and like 50/50
Actor you get Heath and PSM
Actress Reese and Felicity
When one of them doesn't win is cause the other one won and vice versa.

The Academy usually awards for body of work and not for performance. IMO, Hoffman has this in the bag- he's a great character actor that broke out in a starring role. He's well respected and thought of as an "actor's actor". Heath, while he was great in BBM, is not seen this way.

I can see what you mean, probably correct. But anyway, I am still convinced Heath would win and BBM too...Hollywood stop the biopics for Christ sake!

You guys really think Felicity has a chance at the Oscars? Maybe I'll have to eat my words in a couple of months.. but I think Reese has it in the bag... ditto with Ang Lee for director and BBM for screenplay Wallace and Grommit: Curse of the Warerabbit for animated film... of course things could change.. but as of now I think they're very very good bets.

Picture - 75% BBM 25%something else
Actress - 85% Reese Witherspoon 15% Felicity Huffman
Actor - 60% Phillip Seymour Hoffman 40% Heath Ledger
S. Actor - beats me...
S. Actress - 70% Rachel Weiss 30% Michelle Williams

Odette, the description under your name is "Brokeback Mountain's" tagline. Is that just a weird coincidence?

The Golden Globes pretty much had it in the bag for me considering who I think will win, at this moment:
Best Picture - "Brokeback Mountain"
Best Director - Ang Lee "Brokeback Mountain"
Best Actor - Philip Seymour Hoffman "Capote"
Best Actress - Reese Witherspoon "Walk the Line"
(wouldn't be surprised if my I changed my mind, though; her speech was great)
Best Supporting Actor - George Clooney "Syriana" (but the Academy may give Giamatti the pity vote since they didn't even bother to nominate him for "Sideways" last year)
Best Supporting Actress - Rachel Weisz "The Constant Gardener"

Since the Academy is made up of mostly actors, the SAG Awards will be a good indicator of who'd win at the Oscars.
Also, the Director Guild Award winner has rarely been wrong about "Best Director."

'Brokeback Mountain' wins Producers Guild Award
Monday January 23 2:35 AM ET
(Reuters)

Director Ang Lee's gay-cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain" solidified its status as the front-runner for Oscar glory on Sunday when it was named best picture of the year by the Producers Guild of America.

In 11 of the past 16 years, the winner has gone on take home the Academy Award for best picture. Last year was an exception with "The Aviator" winning the Producers Guild Award but losing the Oscar race to "Million Dollar Baby."

...............

With only the awards from the Writers Guild, Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild to come before the Oscars, "Brokeback" looks hard to beat despite its unconventional theme....(http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/20060123/113801252800.html)

Course BBM is hard to beat,it's a masterpiece.
Yes, it is BBM's tagline, I love it and it reminds me so much of the film.
I think the Oscar race for movie it's over, give it to BBM! Ang Lee has no competition and well Michelle has a big chance of winning(even more than Rachel Weizs) but Heath, damn it,anyway I'm still with him.

Felicity won't win because her Desperate Housewives status, I mean, she's popular on TV but just..well...TV's tv and cinema is just far above. Plus, the fact of being well known, pretty and starring in a biopic also helps...Reese will probably get it but I want Felicity.

I don't think that Felicity's DH status is going to play any part in whether she wins or not. Look at Hilary Swank- before she won her first Oscar she was known for a role on Beverly Hills 90210.

I haven't seen Transamerica and I am a very loyal Reese fan and always am taken by her work, but I don't know if her performance is going to win her the Oscar. She starts off very strong in WTL, but fades towards the end. Not that this is entirely a result of her performance- more the fault of the script, but nonetheless, will have an effect on the outcome of the award.

Hilary Swank only had a guest appearance on "Beverly Hills 90210" before "Boys Don't Cry," and she wasn't even well-known while doing it...
Even though Felicity is more apt to win performance wise, and the fact she's doing a drama, the Oscar is more likely to go to Reese. Considering all the awards she has won thus far and her performance history. Felicity is still a newcomer further assisted by her work on DH, and the fact that she lost the SAG...
But I never say never, so...
