Early Oscar Buzz/Nominations '06-'07

It would be ironic if amusing tosh like The Departed got an Oscar after Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and The Gangs of New York, which are all decent films, failed to. Also a Palme D'Or pretty much stuffs an Academy Award in a big French pipe and smokes it.

Borat is even featured in the Oscars? Did he seriously win a Golden Globe? You have GOT to be kidding me!?!

I agree.

I had always wanted to see Borat and I finally did a week ago. IMO, It dosen't live up to the hype. Yeah, the naked wrestling scene was hilarious but really now.

First, "It's Hard out here for a pimp" wins best song, now this?

The Oscars are not too far behind either. Queen Latifah(!) was actually nominated for an Oscar a few years back.

I think that's pretty harsh. If there's a great performance by an actor in a movie, then it deserves to be nominated, no matter who the actor is. Sure, Queen Latifah and Eddie Murphy have done a lot of stupid movies, but the bottom line is that they both delivered award-worthy performances as well. You can't judge an actor's performance on their entire career- Angelina Jolie has been in very few good movies but she is still considered a good actress. Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston have also been in a lot of awful movies! So I think it's pretty unfair that people hold certain career choices someone may have made against someone winning an award they deserve. I don't particularly like Eddie or Queen, by the way, I'm just trying to get you to see my point ^_^

Personally I'm pretty divided over whether Martin should win the Best Director award. I think he does deserve an award- but probably more of a Lifetime Achievement award, The Departed isn't up there with his best films and it's wrong to give him an award for a movie that doesn't deserve it, if you know what I mean? I mean, it was a good movie, but awarding him Best Director because 'he deserves it because he hasn't won already' seems silly.

I think Djimon Hounsou should win... he is consistently fantastic in every movie he's in and is such an underrated actor.

I'm kind of glad Brad didn't get nominated- I know it's not their fault but he and Angelina being at the Golden Globes completely upstaged everything. It'll be nice to read about something other than them for a week or so.

I love, love, love the Oscars and I'm looking forward to Sunday night. It'd definitely be interesting to see how Ellen does as the host.
