Neiman Marcus and Net-A-Porter Dropped Emanuel Ungaro for Spring

This week, Emanuel Ungaro suggested Lindsay Lohan is sucking the soul out of the label he founded. Retailers seem to agree. After terrible reviews for the show marking Lohan's debut as artistic adviser, Neiman Marcus and Net-A-Porter have dropped Ungaro for spring 2010. They were the only two major retailers selling the label outside of freestanding Ungaro stores. Barneys and Saks haven't carried the line for several seasons, and also decided not to pick it up for spring. If you want to buy some spring Ungaro, you can still find it at Vivaldi on the Upper East Side.

Ungaro CEO Mounir Moufarrige brought Lindsay on to boost sales — and yet she's having the opposite effect. Ho-hum. It raises the question of what Moufarrige will do with his new party-girl employee, who is incapable of cleaning her bedroom, probably much less holding a top position at a once-revered high-fashion house. We've heard that shortly after the show, Moufarrige was calling top editors for advice. Rumors about Lohan not getting paid have been going around for some weeks, and now rumors are going around about her getting let go altogether. Lohan has her leggings line to fall back on, but does Ungaro have a safety net?

Well, file this under Not Surprised: Both Neiman Marcus and Net-a-Porter, two of the only big shopping destinations where Ungaro can currently be bought outside of the brand’s own boutiques, have dropped the line for Spring 2010, according to representatives for the stores. Barneys and Saks, meanwhile, haven’t carried the label in a few seasons, and they didn’t jump at the house’s new party girl-based image—neither of them picked up the line for Spring, reps confirm.

As for who did? Well, there’s Vivaldi, an Upper East Side boutique best known for carrying mostly Paris and Milan-based fashions for a well-heeled clientele. And those with a taste for fuchsia minidresses and flying in the face of conventional wisdom can always seek out Ungaro’s own stores.

^let's be clear: neiman marcus and net-a-porter stopped carrying it because -- in this economy -- that stuff won't sell. however, it gives them an easy out because it's not like esteban cortozar blew our socks off in the way that dundas did or valli could.

^Then we had better tell Karl Lagerfeld, with his two year waiting lists for merchandise...It won't sell because it is junk and no one in their right mind would buy it- not beacuse the economy is bad...Several of the high end fashion operations are doing very well right now...

This is so sad to see Ungaro going this way just like everything in Paris going wrong right now...Can they give real talent their chance it is unbelieavable

i didn't mean to speak generally. let's not fool ourselves into thinking ungaro has the same type of cachet as a chanel or a fendi. chanel will always sell because it's one of those brands first off the lips when one thinks of luxury. it's like gucci or prada or dior, etc.

has anyone even mentioned how high priced the lohan ungaro spring collection is? the first dress down the runway...the hot pink micro tube dress...is over $6,000!

If Saint Laurent detested Tom Ford, he surely had his reasons...but you can't compare Tom Ford to Ms. Lohan, no matter the cause.

^ Nor can you compare Emanuel Ungaro to a notoriously temperamental manic depressive for that matter.

I mean, for him to say something so long after retreating quietly from the spotlight he must have been mortified.

I wouldn't blame him.

Lindsay Lohan’s rumor-filled relationship with fashion house Emanuel Ungaro has finally reached a verdict in the “will-she-or-won’t-she-stay” drama: the House wins and Lindsay stays!!!
Last week HollywoodLife.com told you that Lindsay’s career at Ungaro was on the rocks, but Ungaro CEO Mounir Moufarrige told Reuters at the Milan Fashion Global Fashion Summit that Lindsay is staying because “she has a job to do.”
As for recent comments from label founder Emanuel Ungaro, Moufarrige says, “Mr Ungaro has his views, he can keep them. I have no comment.”
Congratulations, Lindsay! Fingers crossed your second collection is a hit, not a miss!

Does Moufarrige have a mental handicap that no one has spoken about publicly or is he just that dense.

Clearly it wasn't just pretentious fashion folk who didn't care for the collection if it was ignored by so many retailers.

^let's not put this collection in a vacuum. many of our favorite designers' first collections at new houses got panned. again, not comparing talents, just reactions: anyone remember pilati's first show for ysl? or mcqueen's first for givenchy? or marc jacobs at vuitton? or gaultier at hermes? the first collection getting panned is almost a rite of passage....it's all about what happens next.

Yes, a designer's first collection at new houses are usually criticized harshly but let's not compare an actress with a multitude of issues to trained and well studied designers.

However, I will say that the collection was not as bad as they are making it out to be. I don't agree with it being dropped from retailers. I'm sure quite a bit of it would have sold.

All they wanted from Lohan was to bring publicity to the house and that's exactly what happened. No matter what they produce from now on, people will be watching. They can drop her later.

^besides....it's not like it's lohan sketching the clothes and sewing them.

Well, everyone is getting something out of this...Ungaro gets lots of (free) press, Lindsay gets attention and maybe some much needed cash, and hopefully the real designers can crank up a decent collection and pull the line back from the edge of the cliff...The real concern is that the company is in a desperate financial situation, and losing major retail outlets and what little is left of it's reputation could be the beginning of the end for them all...:(

Getting panned and being dropped by retailers are two very, very different things. Besides, the designers you mentioned got panned by critics, but editors still pulled the clothes to be photographed and retailers still sold the collections. This collection doesn't seem to have strong support from any end.

To me the buyer's perspective is the most telling one in this case, because if they saw any value, quality or appeal in the clothes they'd likely be selling it. I'm guessing that quality must have been an issue, in addition to the aesthetics. I mean, that $6,000 pink mini dress looks badly made in a photo...I can't imagine it looking better up close and inside out.
