Lots of stars have their favorite designers. But she wears others sometimes too (Oscar de La Renta, Chanel, Peter Som). And IMO she underrated. She's a great actress. What movies have you seen her in? She was amazing in The Phantom of the Opera (she's go such a beautiful singing voice- she was chosen to be part of the Children's Chorus at the Metropolitan Opera when she was only 7, and she stayed there for 5 years). But she's not limited to opera or classical singing (she actually called Phantom a hybrid of pop and classical with a little rock). She sang country ballads in Songcatcher and pop in Nola. She's also given really impressive performances in Songcatcher, Mystic River, and Passionada. If you haven't seen them you should check them out. She's won numerous awards and I think she'll be around for a long time

Emmy was gorgeous in POTO but I was really disappointed with her singing. With all the hype about her singing at the Met as a child I expected her to have a stronger voice.

As an aside, I recently watched the movie Three Smart Girls starring 1930s movie star and operatic prodigy Deanna Durbin. At age 14, Deanna's singing easily blew Emmy's out of the water.

I think the Met was over-hyped- she was in the Children's Chorus, she wasn't a leading lady (like some journalists make it sound). But she did learn to sing there. I was pleasantly surprised with her voice- I guess that has a lot to do with it. But Emmy was only 16 when she did Phantom. I also think that she had the whole package (looks, voice, acting-chops) that they needed for the part. Other people with stronger vocals auditioned, but if they couldn't act...that's a problem.

That said, the role of Christine is very demanding on a singer. It calls for tremendous range. Most singers who take it on are in their mid-twenties to early thirties. Emmy was a good ten years younger than that. She was also able to infuse her singing with emotion and nuance which a lot of people can't do. Also, there is a sweet, sad quality to her singing that suits the role. Plus, she was hired only 2 monthes before filming began, so she had very little time to get her voice back into shape after not singing professionally for several years.

I also think that she talored her singing to the performance. For example at the begining, when she sings 'Think of Me' her voice is soft, sweet and innocent (much like her character). As the character becomes a stronger person and a presence, her singing gained strength. By the end, when she did "Point of No Return" and "Down Once More" her singing was much stronger. I read an interview where she said that she wanted her voice to reflect her character.

So, I was impressed with her. I think Gerard Butler was the weak link in the film. His vocals didn't match up to Emmy's or Patrick Wilson's (probably because they're both trained singers and he's not), yet his character is always called the "Angel of Music" and said to have this amazing voice....When he sang "Music of the Night" I wanted him to belt it out in certain places, but he couldn't. I think they should have had someome else as the Phantom.

This is Emmy at the Japanese premiere of the Day After Tomorrow. Does anyone have a better pic of the dress?

She looks like a waxwork in the green there. Shes just so overly sophisticated. Its nice to see a YOUNG STAR DRESS YOUNG! embrace your youth dammit! she bores me for this reason. Shes predicatable and overly mature in her fashion choices.

I like that her look is sophisticated and elegant. Most young (and some older) stars, dress in flashy, bordering on trashy stuff. Emmy goes for elegance. But she does sometimes wear younger looking stuff:

But I like that even when she wears something more youthful/casual she always looks classy. I WOULD like to see her wear more bright colors occasionally.

I've heared that Charlotte Church also auditioned for the role of Christine, but eventhough her voice is much higher than Emmy they still didnt pick her because shes not that experienced in acting.:(

Yeah she did one movie, I forgot the name but she was terrible as an actress. Her talent is in singing. But her voice has changed as she's gotten older, she's more of a mezzo now. Plus, she's a smoker now too, which can affect your singing. So I can see where they wouldn't hire her. But I LOVE her 1st few albums (I don't like her new pop album).
Emmy also beat out Anne Hathaway, Katie Holmes, and Kiera Knightly for the role. Anne is an awsome singer, but her voice doesn't have the sad, sweet quality that Emmy's does. Also, she doesn't seem to express as much emotion in her singing (I heard her sing in a tribute to Sondheim and she also sang in Ella Enchanted). Katie Holmes just isn't very good (she sang a few times on Dawsons Creek. Her voice is kinda annoying). I've never heard Kiera. I think they made the right choice with Emmy.

i've never seen that last picture.

Keira Knightley auditioned? what singing experience does she have? (and Katie Holmes, WTF?)

i LOVE Gerard's voice. i've heard the Broadway version, and Michael Crawford sounds too nasally. Gerard also sang with emotion, as did Emmy, and i love that.

I heard the Keira rumour - it's on IMDB, but I don't know if she and Katie Holmes really did try out. I would've liked Keira in that....Gerard and Keira? HOTJ TOTHOTTH

They both did tryout. You can hear Katie singing here:
www.katie-holmes.org/audio.php
you can hear her sing "on my own", "daydream believer", "I want you to want me", "I hate myself for loving you", and "la-la" (if the link doesn't work goes to www.katie-holmes.org and click on the media section and scroll down)
After hearing that I can see why she didn't get the part.

Here's some info about Keira's audition:
KNIGHTLEY SNUBBED FOR PHANTOM ROLE

British actress KEIRA KNIGHTLEY auditioned for the lead female role in opera blockbuster THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, only to be told by casting directors "you can't sing".

The 20-year-old beauty labels the audition the "singularly most embarrassing experience of my entire life" and was relieved when they offered the role of CHRISTINE to trained soprano EMMY ROSSUM.

As far as I know neither has had any formal musical training, and the role really calls for at least some.

Wow, I just listened to the first song on that Katie site...sounds like someone messed with the pitch! She cannot have that nasaly voice. Can she?

Yes. She can and she does. She sang the song exactly like that on an episode of Dawson's Creek. I vaguely remembered her voice from that episode when I read about her auditioning for POTO, and I thought to myself "I REALLY hope they pick someone else!" Listening to her makes me glad Emmy got the part...
