It seems to vary a lot from country to country. I mean, The Netherlands send the winner of Holland's Next Top Model.^amazing, thanks !! Love the first picture... and once again she's from a rather good agencythat makes me think that after all I don't really know how this contest works
apparently it's not like Elite Model Look as almost all the contestants are already signed somewhere... does some knows exactly or does have a link ?
This is how Britain's Alexina was chosen. She's with Models 1 now because they are Ford's UK partner for the competition, so all the winners end up there, but I don't think she was signed beforehand.
I don't know exactly how it works in Australia, but there was an article about Letecia which just mentioned how the Ford people were really taken with her and chose to send her to NYC for the final.
And I'm taking a wild guess that the Norwegian girl was chosen through some contest called Årets Ansikt (Face of the Year).
In Sweden they definitely hold open castings, and then there's a proper final in Stockholm where reps from Ford sit in the jury. I'm not sure if already signed girls are allowed to enter, but I've never recognized any of the winners.
It's actually the other way around with EML here. Elite Stockholm hold open calls in several cities, but there's no big final or anything, they just pick two girls. And they don't always send girls found specifically during the EML casting tour either....

^Thanks for clearing it up ! I didn't know that Alexina was related to this contest and anything when I found her on Models1 website... that's why I thought she was already signed. So there's no typical rule...
I didn't know either how EML works in other countries and after all I just know how it works in France.
My overall feeling about all those contests is rather strange in the end. I mean sometimes I've seen winners that wouldn't have caught my eyes and sometimes there's much more than just one girl who deserves to win (that's sure about the international round as it's a contest between the winners, but it's more about the national contests... I've often seen a few faces from the casting that had some potential and never know what finally happened to these girls.)

^^ She's my favorite as well so far Not the most unique girl, but she's really cute with nice features, the potential's there. She reminds me a bit a bit of Mina Cvetcovic.

I wish they would've posted simple polaroids of everyone. Some girls have seriously unflattering snaps, others cheap looking studio shots, and only the lucky few a decent headshot.
