Gucci To Start Couture Line - Gucci Première

I really like Naomi Watts dress.

I think that couture is one of those terms like supermodel, it means different things to different people.

Gucci has defined its Gucci Première line as "one of a kind" and the target market for their couture line are celebrities going to red carpet events. Even under Tom Ford - in fact especially under Tom Ford, Gucci was a glam brand - when the term ghetto fabulous was coined Gucci clad Mary J, Blige was the standard bearer, so if anything this is Gucci trying to reclaim territory that it had ceded to the likes of Elie Saab, Marchesa and L'Wren Scott. This is not meant to be avant garde and directional, this is not red carpet wear for Tilda Swinton and Daphne Guinness and if anything I think this move may give the main line more freedom to be directional. This is a business move (marketing to be more specific) on their part, not a creative one and to their credit, they are not representing it any differently.

All the dresses are pretty and glamorous, nothing more, nothing less. You would expect to see something extravagant, original, and luxurious, but all it is is pretty little beads and luxurious silks. Additionally, the fit of a couple dresses look horrible from the back- which is an extreme downer considering how expensive these gowns are... Well, it is nice and acceptable in the end.

As detailed as these may be I don't really get any sense of design. No interesting cuts, draping, colors etc etc. Crazy streamline but, maybe they are just testing the waters. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a couture version of Frida's hippie vibe and get Gucci out of the cheap persona it has gained since Tom's departure.

These dresses are so boring. Unfortunately they are dominating Cannes! I only liked the ones Salma Hayek (at the Robin Hood premiere) and Naomi Watts wore. Lea Seydoux looks good, too. Can't say I like Frida's designs in general, either.

Gucci Première was chosen by starlets such as Naomi Watts, Camilla Belle, Kate Beckinsale, and Lea Seydoux as they graced the red carpet at the restoration of "Il Gattopardo". Salma Hayek is already a fan as she chose two Gucci Première dresses to attend her red carpet engagements! Frida also worked the red carpet in a floor length silver and lace gown!

Which one is your favorite?

Frida Giannini wore a Gucci Première floorlength strapless gown with draped back detail and embroidered with silver lace and micro palettes

Lea Seydoux chose a Gucci Première champagne charmeause column gown with micro matt and shiny pale gold sequin degrade embroidery throughout. The gown features cut out sleeve and back detail with bodice encrusted in silver and gold metallic lozenge beading.

Naomi Watts wore a Gucci Première pale pink chiffon strapless gown with all over ribbon effect detailed embellishment which features silver square sequins

Kate Beckinsale wore a Gucci Première silk georgette antique white gown draped and embroidered with silver micro bugel beading with metallic silver thread embellished bust and waist detail

Salma Hayek chose a silk georgette Gucci Première scarlet one shoulder gown with sweeping drape across the waist and hip with red glass bugel beaded embroidered detail

Salma Hayek chose a Gucci Première floor length Bordeaux silk georgette one shoulder gown with hip, back and shoulder drape detail and red crystal embroidery at the shoulder and waist. She was the very first to wear the Gucci Première collection as she attended the premiere of Robin Hood

i doubt they chose those dresses...

thing is... that hippie vibe WAS what made Gucci cheap throughout the previous years since Alessandra left.

The first Gucci Premiere dress on Salma was sold for 17.000 euro for some charity event.
This explains a lot, since that's the price for an average Gucci or Valentino RTW gown

^ Where is that the average price for anything by Gucci? Certainly not in the states.

Well if you consider that Dior and Valentino couture dresses can cost up to $ 250.000...
Of course it's not a normal price for something made by Frida, but if you compared it with other couture prices you realize it's not that much

when i first heard about Gucci going couture i thought it was only a joke
and now seeing what Frida wants to sell us as couture I'm sure she's just f*cking kidding with everyone...

I am so glad that this is not a real couture. I was already seeing VS girls doing Gucci HC. I know that is really trendy to have Vs girls at shows

I can now die happy cause I know it's only for celebrities collection, and not real Gucci HC

It's rare for any couture to cost that much money, and when it does $250k will buy you quite a dress.

It's kind of frustrating that Gucci is calling this a couture line, and that the articles about it are referring to it as such. No where has it been mentioned that these clothes are actually couture in terms of craftsmanship. The only thing that's been said is that Gucci is working with various ateliers in Paris, but many designers have embroideries and beadwork done by ateliers like Lesage for their ready to wear, so that alone doesn't make something couture. As far as what we've been told these are couture pieces inasmuch as they're one of a kind and custom made, but they may not meet the standards of true couture, and if not 17,000 euro for that dress Salma Hayek wore is kind of insane.

Something tells me that dress sold for such an exorbitant price not because of the garment itself, but who had been wearing it

It's just so... boring. It doesn't look like couture as much as it does a simple evening wear collection, like YSL Edition Soir.

^I believe that the term 'couture' is not protected but the term 'Haute Couture' is.
So Frida can call her designs couture without being misleading the same way those trashy clothes sold as Juicy Couture are not really an infringement.
BTW, isn't the line actually called Gucci premiere?

Also, regarding the cost of Couture garments, it depends on the House. Elie Saab is the cheapest with prices comparable to high fashion, Dior and Chanel are the priciest. I believe the price range in these two houses is $40,000 to $70,000 for a day outfit and $100,000 on average for an evening dress. $250,000 would be the exceptional showpieces (especially at Dior) and wedding dresses.

I distinctly remember the much talked about Dior flamenco $1 million Couture dress in this forums years ago ...

And the Chambre Syndicale (sp?) has the last word and many rules about this .. with houses like Lacroix closing, Ill say it wud be nice to see more designers doing couture ... hopefully like V&R when they started on it....

This Gucci stuff is bland bland bland and makes me miss Lee's demi couture even more

"Haute Couture" is the protected term AND it's only protected in Paris, since laws are local, they don't function worldwide. The amount of "designers" here in Mexico labeling her crap "haute couture" is just incredible, and there's nothing you can do, just as there's nothing you can do with gucci "couture". However, all of us who know about fashion know from the heart what haute couture really means.

Salma wore another Gucci Premiere dress at the last day of Cannes
