I have no real problem with what Frida does - it's mostly mediocre, but otherwise inoffensive, but this is a seriously bad collection/set of custom-made dresses.

I was just about to say that. I didn't notice it in the two first shots, but when I realized it's here, I couldn't understand who had the idea of attaching such hideous thing to a couture dress

It doesn't seem that Frida will be doing haute couture since she's not planning on showing a collection to the Parisian press, but she's just doing more custom garments. Since the majority seem to be worn by celebrities, she's either hoping for publicity or just knows celebrities are the easier target audience. Frida makes things for Gucci, but they're not so exciting, which seems to be translating into the Premiere collection.

Publicity-wise, I don't really see the worth of a Gucci bespoke couture line, unless they'd still have a designer like Alessandra Facchinetti who showed with her collections that she was capable of doing highly detailed, labour-intense garments both under Tom Ford and during the brief tenure as the womenswear director at Gucci.

These dresses could pass as luxe ready to wear, and it's no secret that design houses are sometimes offering these services to their celebrity clients (On the contrary, it would make the ready-to-wear look more desirable if it had some really particular evening dresses that would be shown alongside the regular ready to wear and that would, by that, receive double the media attention.

There's really much to say about it, other than that Selma Hayek looked good in the dresses, obviously because she slimmed down considerably and also because it was bespoke... the design however, could have been out of everyone's feather.

Rose Byrne wore a Gucci Premiere gown to the 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Personally, I think this Premiere gown is stunning. Obviously, this gown was born out of Frida's Fall 2010 ready-to-wear (the dresses with metal detailing and cut outs). I like the idea that these Premiere gowns could be an extension of what was shown on the runway. It makes sense that way, no?

I actually like Rose's gown. But yeah, I can see her undies! Though this is a step-up from other "glittery beaded" gowns. She should do sort of custom looks continued from the main collection. This will get more cohesive with the main line itself and would be way more publicity-wise. If I'm a rich lady who wants crystalized- beaded couture gown, I would ask Armani Prive to do so!
