Interview November 2017 by Mikael Jansson

Meh. They should ready themselves for their worst selling issue for 2017. I wish magazines would approach older male icons the same way they do female icons.

^^^ Retouch them and style them to look like they’re still in their 30s?

These last couple of issues, with the great portraits, is really giving me Warhol vintage-Interview face… but with a warmth that’s not latching onto nostalgia and very much its own modern identity.

Kim’s cover is the best September cover of any magazine that month, and now these ones—Penelope and Gary, just such immaculate confidence in direction.

He's such a fantastic actor that they didn't really need to do anything with him for this to be a success (although admittedly I'm not that into the image).

Another cover with Templer though...and I bet another issue. Fabien can try all he likes and I like Ludivine well enough, but this might as well be Porter (Upgrade) without his active contributions to each issue.

That's an absolutely fantastic portrait.
Great actor, great cover, great everything.

such a fantastic portarti. looking forward to who'll be featured on the other two (there's supposed to be 3 covers)

No, no...that's not what I meant at all! LOL (Thanks for nailing me to the wall, Nymphaea!)

I would just prefer a bit more production value, a bit more attentive styling. Perhaps on par to when they cover the likes of Jane Fonda or Barbara Streisand. These two looked dignified and very age appropriate for their respective covers. It's always the same with older men in fashion magazines - stoic portrait shot, wrinkles in all its glory since it shows character, and possibly in b&w. Because all people want to see from their male stars is their 'personality', even when they're on a fashion cover. It's perfectly fine for actresses to be dolled to the nines each times, many of it not even matching who they are. Once we can get rid of this nonexistent barrier, we're half way there I think. A least in fashion terms. Mix it up!

Fashion consistently shows Kyle Mclachlan through such a cool and stylish lens. Why can't we see the something more exciting for the others as well?

^^^ I knew what you mean, Benn LOL

I’m glad there are publications that haven’t abandoned the ideal and concept of classic representation of male beauty (and female beauty). It’s not about stubbornly grasping onto traditions and not willing to break barriers and giving men the same treatment that women receive for these covers, and vice versa— which in this case would be purely superficial, and style men the same dramatic fashions that you suggested for the likes of Jane and Barbra on the covers of W. There’s nothing wrong with remaining faithful to the classic representation of masculinity from time to time. Which BTW, I don’t think older men are always presented in this sort of pensive, intellectual fashion: Harrison Ford on the cover of GQ with just a tee and jeans is hardly pensive and intellectual. He’s a very fit 80yo and there’s nothing wrong with showing that off.

The majority of covers these days are such a mess because they are so desperate to be down with everyone— and need to appeal to everyone, that they end up all looking forgettable. This cover won’t appeal to the majority of kidz— but maybe it will appeal to a handful of them and they’ll rethink what is style vs throwaway fashion, and that starts a whole new outlook for the few that’s willing to break away form the herd. It’s how it was with me when I was 12 or 13: I saw my sister’s GQs and Vogues, and that was a point where I started to see new ideas, new concepts and new inspirations.

Wow, so an entire issue filled with b&w photography?? Talk about lazy!

Seems like a menswear issue - wasn't that usually February?
