^^^ I knew what you mean, Benn LOL
I’m glad there are publications that haven’t abandoned the ideal and concept of classic representation of male beauty (and female beauty). It’s not about stubbornly grasping onto traditions and not willing to break barriers and giving men the same treatment that women receive for these covers, and vice versa— which in this case would be purely superficial, and style men the same dramatic fashions that you suggested for the likes of Jane and Barbra on the covers of W. There’s nothing wrong with remaining faithful to the classic representation of masculinity from time to time. Which BTW, I don’t think older men are always presented in this sort of pensive, intellectual fashion: Harrison Ford on the cover of GQ with just a tee and jeans is hardly pensive and intellectual. He’s a very fit 80yo and there’s nothing wrong with showing that off.
The majority of covers these days are such a mess because they are so desperate to be down with everyone— and need to appeal to everyone, that they end up all looking forgettable. This cover won’t appeal to the majority of kidz— but maybe it will appeal to a handful of them and they’ll rethink what is style vs throwaway fashion, and that starts a whole new outlook for the few that’s willing to break away form the herd. It’s how it was with me when I was 12 or 13: I saw my sister’s GQs and Vogues, and that was a point where I started to see new ideas, new concepts and new inspirations.
