The launch of the unisex perfume Gaultier² last year was just a precursor of things to come. This season, Jean Paul Gaultier approaches true androgyny as he launched his menswear line Gaultier², which can be worn by both men and women without a change in cut or silhouette.
To stress the point, the venue of the show had black and white chairs side by side, each one of them had a gift bag containing the Gaultier² perfume, and when the show began, the models came in like fraternal twins one after the other, male first, followed by the female, wearing the same outfit, but styled differently.
It's familiar, yet out of the ordinary; it's beautiful and unnerving at the same time of how a man and woman can share the same clothes, with the male looking masculine and the female looking so feminine.
But, that is the magic of Jean Paul Gaultier, as we have seen already way back in 1985 when he created a unisex collection entitled 'A Wardrobe For Two.' With him, fashion come within reach of real unisex, and in a way, the true liberation of the sexes.
As fashionistas know, women had been borrowing clothes from the men's wardrobe for a long time. This time, women do not have to do that. They can actually shop in a men's boutique, get the clothes they like and wear them proudly!
Case in point, the trench coat. Tailored with zips on the waistline, a man can wear it like a regular trench coat. When a woman gets a hold of it, she puts on a blouse, unzips the waistline, close the "skirt," leave the top open and voila, she has a dress suit on!
As the press notes said, "every model in the Gaultier² collection will be available from size XS (extra small) to XL (extra large), therefore allowing women access to the men’s collection."
Gaultier² will remain to be classified as menswear; the cut will not be modified from one size to the other and that the buttons will always be on the men's side. It will be offered to women though.
The collection will include basics from Jean Paul Gaultier's men's wardrobe such as the trench coat, pea jacket, suit, kilt, pant-skirt and duffle coat among others. It will be available in all free-standing Jean Paul Gaultier boutiques and specialty stores starting Fall 2006.
