Was Katie Holmes Tom Cruise's top choice for arm candy?

One rumor doing the Hollywood Hills cocktail circuit is that young Miss Holmes was not the first photogenic virgin-type to be auditioned for the part of the girlfriend.

"Before Katie, he was interested in Kate Bosworth," says a snitch.

But the actress, who is Orlando Bloom's on-and-off gal pal, apparently did not reciprocate the feelings. (Bosworth's rep, who is good at not commenting, didn't comment. Cruise's rep — his sister — told us, "That is completely and ­utterly false information.")

Tom, for his part, tells the next Reader's Digest that the ladies just drive him ker-azy.

"They smell good. They look pretty. I love women. I do."

With lines like that, no wonder he gets the babes.

Lol, that's a funny article. Unfortunately, Kate was auditioning for the part vacated by Scarlett Johanssen in M:I3, which she seemingly didn't get. However, the part seems to be between Lindsay Lohan and Elisha Cuthbert. It is not a romantic interest for Tom, which is going to be played by Carrie Ann-Moss. And has nothing to do with Katie or Tom's actual love life.

I never got the Cruise thing. I watched Jerry Maguire yesterday and I loved it, but that was more to do with Cuba Gooding Jr being so incredibly funny rather than Tom Cruise. Kate Bosworth doesn't seem to have a personality to me. But then again, neither does Katie. They're both the same-blah.
