Lady Gaga Denied Permit for Indonesia Concert

Sold Out Show Set for June 3, Which Would Have Been Largest on 'Born This Way Ball' Tour, Halted After Pressure From Islamists

Lady Gaga will have to cancel her sold-out show in Indonesia following protests by Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers, who said her sexy clothes and dance moves will corrupt the youth.

National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar, responding to the pressure, said Tuesday that the permit for her June 3 "Born This Way Ball" concert had been denied.

Indonesia, a nation of 240 million people, has more Muslims than any other. Although it is secular and has a long history of religious tolerance, a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years.

Hard-liners have loudly criticized Lady Gaga, saying the suggestive nature of her show threatened to undermine the country's moral fiber. Some threatened to use physical force to prevent her from stepping off the plane.

Lawmakers and religious leaders, too, have spoken out against her.

Worried they could not guarantee security, local police recommended the permit for the show be denied, said Amar, adding that national police decided Tuesday to comply.

It was supposed to be the biggest show on Lady Gaga's Asian tour, with fans snapping up every seat in Jakarta's 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium - half of them in the first two hours of sales.

Permits usually are issued about three weeks before a concert in Jakarta, so it is common to sell tickets well ahead of receiving the permit. It was not immediately clear if the ticket sales would be refunded. The local promoter, Michael Rusli, could not be reached for comment.

"I'm very disappointed," said Mariska Renata, who had tickets to the Jakarta show.

She said by bowing to the wishes of "troublemakers," authorities only give them more power. "We are mature enough to be able to separate our own moral values from arts and culture," Renata said.

Lady Gaga's Asian tour started late last month and many of the stops have sold out. The South Korean concerts were limited to fans 18 or older because conservatives there raised objections.

I'm loving all the new photos. As much as I hate Terry's work, it's nice to see candid photos of Gaga

I don't remember it either- but they did a bunch of things like that back in the 90s, so it might be vintage or, being Gaga, Karl might have made it up just for her... ^_^

Thanks for all the updates and photos!
She has a concert in Vienna (which is the closest city to my country) but ticket prices are so much higher than for the Monster Ball Tour.

^ I can't wait to see what the tickets will be in the NY Metro area...I'll need a bank loan!!

i think i prefer that though, i get bored if she supply's the perfect package every time. The whole idea of her style is it can be couture one day and rough and ready the next i believe.

Lady Gaga Cancels Indonesia Show Amid Threats of Violence

'This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her'

Lady Gaga has canceled her concert in Jakarta, Indonesia after Islamic hardliners threatened violence, the Associated Press reports.

The concert, scheduled for June 3rd at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, had sold out its 52,000 tickets, though it has been a question for some time whether Lady Gaga would receive the required permits for the event to go on.

Now a group called the Islamic Defenders Front, calling the singer "a messenger of the devil," has claimed that its supporters had bought tickets to the show and planned to stop the performance from within the venue.

They also said that thousands of protesters would confront Lady Gaga at the airport if she entered the country.

Officials said they would issue permits only if the singer toned down the controversial elements of the Born This Way Ball. Lady Gaga and her promoters declined to change the act.

"With threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga's side is calling off the concert," Minola Sebayang, a lawyer for concert promoter Big Daddy, told the Associated Press. "This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her."

Another representative for Big Daddy said that ticketholders would be fully refunded.

We had to cancel the concert in Indonesia. I'm so very sorry to the fans & just as devastated as you if not more. You are everything to me.

I will try to put together something special for you. My love for Indonesia has only grown. #GagaSendsLoveToJakarta and all its people. ~ LG's Twitter
