Well, it was pretty bad, for a performance or not. Plus the outfit itself was just ugly. I don't think people were especially critical but perhaps people were more sensitive after the discussion about whether she was changing image or not? Regardless, the newest outfit is definitely a million times better although, nothing particular special.

I'd say you've hit the nail on the head Advo! On both counts, 1: That outfit was just plain bad, performance or not. I mean there's good crazy (which is kind of awesome) a la Beyonce + Christopher Kane stage outfits, or even Lady Gaga at times, and there's crazy that you wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole because its just bad.

and 2: I think its pretty obvious she's changing/attempting to project a certain image to go with her branching out into singing, hence the overt sex appeal in the GQ spreads and how she presents herself in her video clips, as well as the way she's dressing for performances (ie. flesh baring, faux-edginess). Anyway, I wished she dressed better so I could take her seriously again!

^I kind of disagree with that statement. She only presented at the MTV Movie Awards and her outfit seemed to be the standout outfit on the red carpet!

I loved that because it was well-balanced between the sheerness and the booties, which were conservative (esp. compared to her crazzzzy footwear collection). It was a special treat for you if you followed her, but it didn't demand attention.

Dressing for a performance and shoots is putting on another show--it says nothing about her as a professional or who she is candidly, basically you might as well confuse her for Blair--and I don't even know if Leighton ever had a conservative image since she was never afraid to show skin. You have your right to an opinion but it doesn't seem like Leighton is taking herself too seriously? She's out there having fun and her fans, apparently, are in hysterics. LOL.

I completely agree. You can still be dressed "appropriately" for the occasion and still steal the spotlight by just being awesomely styled. The MTV Movie Award was an example of that. The award itself she presented wasn't anything special nor was the presentating, but damn it, if Leighton didn't look FINE! And I COMPLETELY disagree that it didn't demand attention. It was exactly because it was edgy and daring yet still totally appropriate that it was so great. She was on most people's list of best dressed that night. That outfit was definitely meant for stealing attention, and deservingly too!

The outfit, where she's presenting with Cindy Lauper is not bad, but it could essentially be any outfit you wore anytime, hence it's nothing special. But it's not a diss. You can't get it right everytime (unless, you're Diane Kruger ). Leighton is still trying to find her style.

But of course, everyone will freak out when she wears something ridiculously bad. This is after all a fashion forum and style is 90% of what we comment on. In a couple of days, nobody will even remember she wore that outfit and Leighton will wow us with another outstanding outfit, just the way I like it.

Yeah, she was nominated last year - together with the rest of the cast. GG also generated a whole lot more buzz last year, hence the bigger representation of the cast among nominees. Not that you consider something like that relevant in a discussion about Leighton's popularity.... right?

If only you know what you're talking about. I don't know what belittling women left and right bashing their careers and "stans" have to do with style either. No matter how well one may thinks she knows about class, it's nullified when it isn't presented through actions.

Some of you weren’t surprised at Sharon Stone’s crazy red carpet look yesterday, but NONE of you would have predicted Leighton Meester would fall so highly from her pedestal.
Leighton wore crazy coloured pants, studded booties, a brown belt, and a vest when she performed five songs at the “American Eagle Outfitters” flagship store party in New York this week.
In her constant effort to distance herself from Blair Waldorf her style team have taken things way too far.
You’ve heard of drunk dialing, this is drunk styling at its very worst.
Are they trying to create a new Lady GaGa with this crazy styling, or are they just trying to distract us from Leighton’s “singing” abilities?
Either way it has to stop.


I did like the leather Paule Ka Fall 2009 plunging dress which she paired with Nicholas Kirkwood python cut-out platform heels and a gold Herve Leger clutch when she arrived at this event.
But the make-up…tragic.

There is nothing redeemable about that outfit. Except the hairstyle is kind of neat in theory -- apparently those bangs are the ends of her ponytail, which she flipped and pinned to the top of her head. That is kind of a cool idea, although it looks really bad here.

I also just saw the video of the performance and it was only a 53 second clip, but it was not very good. It sounded like drunken karaoke combined with drunken dancing. Not a stellar start in her music career, but at least it was only for an AE event, which nobody really cares about. It would be way worse if this was a major event like an awards show or a televised performance.
