chicagotribune.comWhat makes Leighton Meester nervous?
Sex scenes on her CW drama “Gossip Girl”? Performing songs from her yet-to-be released album in front of an audience? Public speaking?
“My little brother driving,” responded Meester, laughing.
The 23-year-old actress/singer, who was in Chicago for the first time Friday for a performance at The Underground (56 W. Illinois St.), said she doesn’t really get nervous before live shows. More like excited.
“I like dancing anyway – and I love my music – so it’s not that hard,” Meester said. “It’s fun. I’m like best friends with my dancers, so it comes easily. There’s nothing like performing live. It’s so wonderful and fun.”
Like her head-band wearing “Gossip Girl” character, Blair Waldorf, Meester is well known for her fashion sense. She said she enjoys her trendsetter status and admitted her music career has played a role in her wardrobe choices as of late.
“I think I’ve become more in tuned to a casual side that I never really knew,” said Meester, who is featured on the Cobra Starship song “Good Girls Go Bad.” “When I perform, I like to wear sneakers, pants and big baggy t-shirts and call it a day. And that can be really fun.
“Fashion is one of the ways I express myself. I love it. I really live for it. I know it’s not important to everybody, but I find a lot of joy in it.”
Meester’s album, which still doesn’t have a release date, will have an electro pop sound and will feature cameos from R&B crooner Robin Thicke and workaholic rapper Lil’ Wayne.
“He’s amazing,” Meester said about Wayne. “I have nothing but good things to say about the guy. The song (‘Make It Rain’) is very club friendly. It’s hot.”
WhoWhatWear.comAwards season may still be around the corner, but we've had our eyes on the prize all year. You see, though a grade-A ensemble may seem like less of a production than a film, we know that a blockbuster outfit is truly an achievement. So for this year's best-dressed round-up we wanted to give credit where credit is due and single out the most stellar sartorial performances of 2009. All twelve of these well-dressed winners have played roles in making this year memorable, so we wanted to pay tribute to their particular clothing contributions in our inaugural edition of Who What Wear's Style Awards. So without further delay, the envelopes please…
Best Uptown/Downtown Mix
Though she's known to steal the scenes as the delightfully vicious Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl, it was Leighton Meester's marvelously dramatic dressing that captured our attention off-screen. We love the way she nails the prim-and-preppy UES look so well for her day job, but then opts to support more directional designers—like Christian Cota and Christopher Kane—for her nighttime events. Whatever style she is sporting, we are more than happy to sit back and watch as this small screen star makes big fashion waves!
